The petition calls for Priti Patel to resign as Home Secretary or for Boris Johnson to sack her

MORE than 6000 people have signed an online petition in just two days calling for Home Secretary Priti Patel to resign or for Boris Johnson to sack her.

The petition follows the dismissal of an appeal for the extradition of three men – known as the West Midlands Three – by the Indian government, over the high-profile murder of Rulda Singh, leader of a political group in India, who was shot dead there in 2009.

Last week the case at Westminster Magistrates Court was dismissed because of a lack of evidence, after which human rights lawyer Gareth Pierce said: “It is an extraordinarily serious matter that a [Indian] government, knowing that the evidence it has, can go against three men in another country with the hope to obtain their extradition to India.”7

Edward Fitzgerald QC, representing one of the three, said the extradition request was “made on the basis of wholly unsubstantiated allegations”.

Mankamal Singh, a London born Sikh who is an advisor to The Sikh Network, said what the Indian government did not tell the court was that there had already been trials over the alleged murder with different suspects in India who had all been acquitted.

“The judgments in those cases even said that the same evidence produced, again and again, had been fabricated, witnesses were coerced and they also did not say what the prosecution claimed they had said,” he said.

Pierce commented: “How can it be that the prosecutors can try and try and try again on the same discredited evidence?

“In some ways, it’s a disappointment that this case has finished in this court without the defence evidence being heard.”

The case has already led to Preet Kaur Gill, ahair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for British Sikhs, demanding answers from Patel over concerns that the extradition request had been certified despite the previous investigations and no credible new evidence.

Mankamal Singh added: “The reality of the past few years, with the incarceration of British born Jagtar (Jaggi) Singh Johal in India and disinclination by the Foreign Secretary to engage with the family, demonstrates the current Conservative Government has come to believe that those who advocate for Sikh rights are a fringe that can be persecuted without fear of a community backlash.

“The horrific treatment of Jagtar Singh Johal and the West Midlands Three is being interpreted as a ‘diplomatic gift’ from the UK to India to boost post-Brexit trade relations.

“This is not the first time that British Sikhs have felt that they can be used by the Government as a political pawn with impunity.”

Jaggi Singh – a Scot – was "kidnapped" by Indian authorities while shopping with his wife more than 1400 days ago.

He is still in jail, pending trial and facing a potential death sentence over a confession he said was signed under torture, including electrocution.

UN agencies have petitioned the Indian government over his treatment and two international charities have taken up his case.

Although most of the signatories to the petition are from the Sikh community, updates to the petition show increasing support from non-Sikhs, including from Jennifer Horwood, who wrote: “Priti Patel is unfit to hold such high office,” and Phillipa Thornton, who added: “Priti Patel should not be part of any government with her extreme right wing views.”

MP demands answers over 'unjust' treatment of West Midlands Three

By Peter MadeleyWolverhamptonPoliticsPublished: 4 hours ago

Preet Kaur Gill has demanded answers over the "targetting" of the men, known as the West Midlands Three, who were accused of being involved in a murder plot in India in 2009.

The Home Office certified an extradition request in December 2020, but an appeal to hand them over to Indian authorities was dismissed in September after a District Judge found that no case could be established.

Edgbaston MP Ms Gill, who is chair of the all party parliamentary group for British Sikhs, has demanded answers over the handling of the case.

She also called for the Home Office to push for the release of another British national, Jagtar Singh Johal, who has been held in an Indian jail without charge for more than four years.

Ms Gill said: "The case of the West Midlands Three is appalling. Having met with them, I've seen first-hand the unjust treatment which they have been subjected to.

"The targeting of innocent, British Sikhs has no place in our society

"Jagtar Singh Johal has now been detained in India, facing the death penalty, for more than four years with only an alleged confession obtained under torture as evidence.

"In accordance with foreign office policy where an individual is arbitrarily detained, the UK Government must act and call for Jaggi's release. It is vital that the foreign secretary now makes this urgent request."

Jaggi's situation has me speechless. My mind is active but my mouth is gonna stay shut.

I will say this. India is securing it's legacy as a backwards racist beta nation , and I'm not the only person who will remember this forever. That the indian government is a terrorist organization and an enemy to us all, Sikhs especially.

We should lobby every country we live in to rescind their embassies and diplomatic status.

And we should have a site where we post everyone's response and a thread for each person where we follow up with them and post updates.

Ie. so and so said that's horrible, update so and so is all talk and has done nothing.

Person B, says they won't help, after facebook stalking and outing them to all their friends and constituents they've decided to help afterall.

Probably won't have much help though since I have a feeling the uk and us are going to create a climate where they have to set up in india to protect it from afghanistan and china so we have a large pool of cheap labor to exploit as we did before china grew up. I guess the brightside is that will pollute and develop india like happened with china. The cost will be your people, freedoms and environment. Prepare to be polluted for profit.

Yep speechless faded. Outrage warmed up.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
