It becomes difficult to avoid them when they're occasionally the only place that sells the exact thing a person needs.

I was looking for a particular bathroom LED mirror a few months ago. I knew I had to spend a pretty penny to get it, but I was getting ridiculous prices from specialist local places in the region of £300-£400. I went on Amazon and found an identical mirror to the one I was looking for at £150. Difficult to scoff at that when money is tight these days.

But, yes, there is a danger of them becoming too powerful and controlling.
