Sun Clock at Harmandir Sahib

Recommended Posts

Quite cool, a sundial or sun clock at Harmandir Sahib. Its from the time of the Sikh empire. I've never seen it before but its along the bridge that connects the Dharshan Deori and Harmandir Sahib. Nice bit of history!    hopefully they won't destroy it!

This could have been used to measure Pehar timings.

A common misconception is that a pehar is 3 hours long, this is far from the case. A pehar is dynamic depending on what part of the day one is in.

There are two parts in day: Daytime and Nighttime. This means there are two types of pehars.

Daytime: Sunrise to Sunset
Nighttime: Sunset to next Sunrise

Since Sun timings are always changing, pehar timings are always different.

1st Daytime Pehar - Starts at Sunrise
3rd Daytime Pehar - Starts at Solar Noon

1st Nighttime Pehar - Starts at Sunset
3rd Nighttime Pehar - Starts at Solar Midnight.

In total there are 8 Pehars, but one cannot assume the daytime and nighttime pehars are of the same length.
