Sri Lanka has announced plans to ban the wearing of burqas and said it would close more than 1,000 Islamic schools known as madrassas, citing national security.

The minister of public security, Sarath Weerasekara, said he had signed a paper on Friday seeking the approval of the cabinet of ministers to ban burkas – outer garments that cover the body and face worn by some Muslim women.

“The burqa has a direct impact on national security,” Weerasekara told a ceremony at a Buddhist temple on Saturday. “In our early days, we had a lot of Muslim friends, but Muslim women and girls never wore the burqa,” Weerasekara said, according to video footage sent by his ministry. “It is a sign of religious extremism that came about recently. We will definitely ban it.”

The wearing of burqas was temporarily banned in 2019 after the Easter Sunday bomb attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka that killed more than 260 people. Two local Muslim groups that had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group have been blamed for the attacks at six locations – two Roman Catholic churches, one Protestant church and three top hotels.

Weerasekara also said the government will ban more than 1,000 madrassas, saying they are not registered with the authorities and do not follow the national education policy.

The decision to ban burqas and madrassas is the latest move affecting the Indian Ocean island nation’s minority Muslims

Muslims make up about 9% of the 22 million people in Sri Lanka, where Buddhists account for more than 70% of the population. Ethnic minority Tamils, who are mainly Hindus, comprise about 15% of the population.

The bulk of the muslims in Sri Lanka are Tamil speakers and are actually Tamil.

But I think what has happened in Sri Lanka is that like South India, the muslims have started to pick Arab style of dress and begun the Arabisation process.

Budhist majority countries are racist and a failure to the teachings of budha. What face will myanmar budhists show to budha?

If Buddha neglected to impart the need for his people to defend themselves physically (which includes pre-emptive action) from external threats that will one day prove to be an existential threat, should they lay down and be destroyed in order to stay in the good graces of Buddha?

If Sikhi started with Guru Nanak Dev Ji and concluded with Guru Arjan Dev Ji, you'd be happy to have reverted to Hinduism, convert to Islam, or exist under a Jain-esque pacifist brand of Sikhi?

I would like to know why Buddhists are thought of as pacifist.

I think this is a myth that has been promoted.

It is not a myth.  Buddha lived at a time when there was no threats to Indians from Christianity or Islam or from foreigners.

He didn't create a new religion or claim land as a result.  He was moved by poverty and wanted to know the reasons for it.  After his meditation and enlightenment experience, he created the Middle 8-Fold Path as a new Spiritual movement.  Those that felt threatened by his teachings went about trying to counter him using their own spiritual experiences/scriptures as was the way ie debate.

The same as Sri Guru Nakak Singhji did.  He said 'There is no Muslim, there is no Hindu', meaning we are all human.  He took teachings from Sufiism and Hinduism as a way to bring peace to the region.  He attracted no enemies.  His parents did not throw him out or deny him his family rights due to his rejection of janeu.  In fact they supported him and his family whilst he went on long journeys to spread his message, though they were clearly frustrated by his actions.

So any new religion/panth is created to resolve a particular problem, otherwise there is no need.

I am not talking about the Buddha himself. Though Hindu Brahmin Hierarchy would have an issue with Buddha at the time.

I am talking about Buddhists.

Bodhidarma was hardly a pacifist when he taught the Shaolin back in 526AD.

Nor were the Japanese.

Nor were the Thais.

The Mongols had a Buddhist element to them as well.

I think Ahimsa is a term that seems to be attributed to Buddhists.

What it actually means is "Do no harm". This does not necessarily mean that they won't do harm if they are threatened.
