Why do British Sikhs write "pen ji" instead of "bhan ji" and "pend" instead of "pind", etc.

On my dad's side Chandigarh and on mom's i think Ludhiana. Both sides trace their roots to pre partition Panjab though

Yeah its probably because of dialect that you speak.

On a side note, this is why its important to teach kids Punjabi, there are sounds/tones in Punjabi that don't exist in English. Otherwise western Sikhs will be pronouncing bani with very broken words!

I'm already seeing some of it's effects. Every parent should teach their child abt Sikhi but many don't nowadays.

Yeah its in full swing. One of my friends he's around 10 years older than me and he has two little kids. He believes in God but doesn't believe in karma, reincarnation, heaven/hell, divine judgment etc nothing!   so what exactly is he gnna teach his two little kids?

Its happening everywhere ...

His kids will learn though his and his wife's example. Other than that the school and life experiences do the teaching.

I think many british raised apnay REALLY struggle to pronounce ਭ and turn it into a ਪ. I definitely do.

Or is it a Malwai thing?

I noticed as well (growing up) the norm was to use the sound (phoneme) associated with ਫ਼ instead of properly pronouncing the aspirated ਫ.

It’s a diaspora thing. Malvai's pronounce ਭ correctly.
