I'm only getting my head around the events surrounding this. It's tragic. I think Baba Bir Singh was hit by a canon when darbar troops shelled the dera....

Well made documentary!

Born Nihal Singh in 1680; after Pahul became Bhagwan Singh; most well known as Bhai Maharaj Singh for his habit of respectfully calling others ‘maharaj’; became known as Baba Karm Singh in Singapore for the “karni wala” powers. What an influence and anchor for Singaporean Sikhs. Also, amazing to hear the continued miracles happening to this day and the amount of devotion local sangat still holds.

They were about 60 years of age in 1839 when M.Ranjit Singh dies. They take the reins of the Nurangabad dera in 1844 after Hira Singh Dogra attacks it and kills Baba Bir Singh and his Singhs.

They go underground in 1845 and try to stitch together various alliances to oust the British, until their capture in December 1849.  They are shipped off to Singapore in 1850 (at age 70) and kept in inhumane conditions. Very painful to read and hear how much excruciating pain they must have endured at that old age for the next 6 years in a windowless cell. Not even allowed to walk outside. Bhai Maharaj Singh ji passed away 1856 suffering extreme joint swelling, cancers on their tongue and in their throat, blindness. Such cruelty enveloped in ‘colonial administration’.

and yet the descendants of those dogras enjoy and wield political influence 70 years after "independence" and hari singh losing his jammu kingdom

These sampardaya are REALLY important right now (not that they weren't in the past as the thread demonstrates), because they have retained some stuff lost during the Singh Sabha lehar and also give us a trustable source to finally take ourselves out of the colonial baggage too many apnay still live in the shadow of.  

yo I randomly remembered the other figure to received amrit at the hands of baba bir singh naurangabad in panj pyare

one is of course bhai maharaj singh, other one I was talking about is baba khem singh bedi (highly controversial man lol)

This is from Honigberger's book. Note how Baba Bir Singh ji is called the 'high priest of the Sikhs':
