Becoming a Granthi

Think it has been mentioned before here maybe

But why not make 'Granthi' a prestigious career choice ?

There are many young and enthusiastic kids who are into Sikhi in the West, many of whose parents are not too bothered about them going into the traditional 'prestigious' jobs in biomedical science , law, accounting or working in the City

Granthis would be well paid, given lodgings, and allowed to have a family as per Sikh values. This would work I think, in the West where Gurdwaras can afford to fund good wages.

Also, they would be bilingual and do katha in English for the youth in the West.

They could spend time learning from Granthis in India as part of their training

What does the Sangat think ?

They could also choose the route of becoming specialised as Kathakaar or Kirtani. 

They could be taught political education also

I'd make physical activity training compulsory also because most seem to be unfit by their 30's at least

It will also reduce dependence of western Sikhs on Indian granthis and kathavachaks.

But will the committees of western gurdwaras give good salary to the granthis?

I don't have much faith on our gurdwara committees whether in India or in the West.

Basics of Sikhi in many ways was an amature adventure with little funding. Maybe even if in our small groups we started developing a little Granthi, and restructured Daswand, and therefore committees, we could rejoin with the Granthis, but with new structure and therefore able to ensure the pros get paid a good salary.

So this was on youtube shorts. I stay well away from anything Osho related, but this clip...dude nails it. 

 It's also for sale, and infiltratable. 

Which is why we need to reinstitute, a consensus based, localized to globalized, representative body of Khalsa from all the Gurudwara and Jathas.  The Mona, and Sehajdhari, can have roles in selecting initial representatives, but any representatives at the Gurudwara or larger level should be selected from Khalsa in good standing.

If you are focused on 'good salary' then you will not necessarily attract the most pious, upstanding citizens who are committed to a lifetime of seva. 

It is better that you choose someone based on their character and personality. It is not a career but a spiritual calling. 

To that end then only their needs should be considered ie. Rent or mortgage subsidy and a stipend to cover living costs. So in theory living quarters could be built within the gurudwara itself if funds are scarce until such time a flat or house is purchased for the use of the granthi. 

Otherwise you are only feeding their ego and greed as is happening in Christian churches. 

A way forward may be to sponsor a few students to go to India to learn the various religious texts, as GGSji did by sending some of his followers to learn Sanskrit and the vedic texts, to have an understanding of spiritual practices. By immersing themselves in this way, they can decide whether it is really for them as they would need to be committed for a number of years to complete the training. 

ISKCON do this on an international basis by sponsoring young children and youths to live the life of a sanyassi who are then employed in temples across the world.  They learn skills they could not in the conventional way.

This is a Sikh forum. Try to refrain promoting other stuff that is not inline with Sikh Dharam. They are probably inline with your ideology and you don't have to defend it here and we respect your beliefs. 

Anyway, to the OP, Guru sahib ji paid good to all those do did such sewa. Sewa should come from the heart and one should be paid well in order to do it. Read why we have a place called "Manji Sahib" next to darbar Sahib where Guru sahib ji distributed funds and used a system as well around punjab. 

Lack of Good pay is the reason why we don't have good pracharak. I would suggest you to contact Basics of Sikhi.

Yes, I believe we should be paying them well. 'Sikhs' have no problem spending thousands of pounds/dollars on singers for wedding parties.

To add to this, this type of 'Khalsa education' should encompass shastar vidya, hunting teaching, and horse riding.
