I disagree with the more racism statement although the weather is better. I know Australia has the "racist" stereotype but its exaggerated. The "Anglos" (white people of British origins) in Australia don't think about the UK, to them it's just another place, some also want Australia to become a republic by leaving the commonwealth.

How old are you approximately ?

Where in Aus are you ?

I am sure that with more multiculturalism, racism is less than it was. But I know Brit Asians who have gone over and they have warned me to be wary of every going there to settle as racism is more than the UK. I heard the culture still has lots of casual racism and sexism.

I think you underestimate the closeness that Australians feel to Britain, many are only first or second gen Angle immigrants.

And with the political, societal  and educational structure similar and related to the UK (lots of private and boarding schools for example), the sort of cover ups we have had here wrt grooming and sexual deviancy, I would not be surprised if there are stories about this in increasing number in Aus in the near future.

Sikhs in Australia are more recent immigrants so they’re still connected to Punjabi culture but never witnessed behaviour you described.

Drinking is almost always limited to Sikh males here (in wedding parties too)

Look sis. The government and police (!!) here helped cover up the grooming of Sikh girls for decades (and still are!), that should give you an idea of what we've been dealing with.

Couple that with how apnay seem to live in denial a lot of the time.....

Have some respect for the brothers and sisters who didn't lay down like sheep in the face of this.

And I'm just saying be wary of that tendency of many apnay to ignore or be oblivious to stuff.

Have you read the RASE report? If not, you should.

I think because a lot of the immigrants are/were young students from Panjab, they were/are quite heavy into Punjabi culture. But I think, just as in the UK, those who are married/have families more easily are going towards Sikhi these days ?

Yes, racism was more common before the increase of multiculturalism in Australia.

The last major "race riot" in Australia were the Cornulla Riots (2005)  in Sydney between Middle Eastern youth and Anglo-Australians. There was already tension between the community and Lebanese youths before this event and people, particularly women, claimed to have been harassed, almost daily, by "groups of young Lebanese men" attempting to "pick them up" and describing the women as being "Aussie sluts".

Some Australians can be "casually" racist, it's part of the culture to poke fun at certain things.

Let me try and answer that again now I've had a ponder over it.

I think it was starting to go the right way here (towards Sikhi) but I think having more and more freshies immigrating is likely pushing it back to bhangra-centric penduism.

I think a lot of the new arrivals and the ones I've seen in Italy (on TV) don't seem to care much for 'bhangra' (maybe non bhangra Panjabi music though) - they also seem to be into Sikhi and attend Gurdware often (don't know if that's mainly for Langar)

By casually racist, I mean they would say something offensive and not think much of it. Not jokey like your above example.

Saw this docu on Australia and the Lebanese immigrants where they made it look one-sided against the Aussies

https://www.aljazeera.com/program/featured-documentaries/2015/2/23/once-upon-a-time-in-punchbowl

Btw , which city are you in/close to ? Melbourne was a 'non-penal' city, I think, compared to the other major ones, so wonder if less racism there?

@Kaurr, what do you think of racism in Aus ?

The riots were definitely not one sided. We were taught both sides had fault, they had tensions with each other which eventually broke out into a big riot.

There are some people here and there that don't know how to ask a question properly. I live in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, there's a lot of immigrants, so there's not that much racism, there's a decent amount of Lebanese in my area, some of them are racist but it's not too much. I now started going to school in the inner suburbs, where you have all these white people, and it definitely exists a bit, but it's not too common. A few of my mates, East and South Asian, have faced a bit of racism. The other month in the tram, a few of mates were telling me that a group of white boys started purposely out loud to each other saying this racist stuff to each other cause there were browns and Asians on the tram.

Generally here, people literally take the piss out of everything, and crack a lot of offensive jokes here and there, so some people could find some of that racist.

Guys, everyone is racist. It's normal to prefer people of our own culture/ethnicity/heritage. lol. I can't really blame white people for being closet racists knowing we are racist to our own people sometimes, but when it becomes physical that's when I find it disgusting. Actually I think white people are lowkey the least racist around. I found East Asians and blacks far more racist.

Being racist and then physically harming someone because of that racism is completely different. Some people might have bad views about others but they dont go out of their way to kill them unlike some groups.

I believe there's a difference between wanting the best for your own people by prioritising their interests, and at the other end of the spectrum rounding up everyone who isn't your kind, and standing them up infront of a firing squad. For some reason, modern society has been conditioned into thinking that the former is EXACTLY the same as the latter, and I think that's so laughable.

If East Asians barely attack anyone; their racism impacts nobody. If whites are actually using racism to justify attacking people; then their racism holds actual weight in the world. By physical violence, it is safer to be a black person in Japan, Korea, and China, then it is to be an Indian in America, UK, and Canada.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
