Trying to give up eating meat

I have done one day yay lol I find a lot of vegetarian dishes nice, just wondering what these meat substitute are like. Anyone tried them , or are they a waste of time or ermmm taste.

Soy based meat susbtitutes taste great if prepared right. Problem is they are gassy and makes my stomach upset,bloated.

I'm not picky. I've enjoyed a variety of vegan meats, veggie burgers etc.

Hanji veerji, I'm vegetarian too . Been vegetarian since birth, soy based mock meat is great.So far I haven't had any issue of stomach bloating cuz of them, but I guess it's different for each person.Great job in starting to be Vegetarian.

Although I do eat quite a but of them I do wonder about the long term effects of Quorn and Linda McCartney products.

I was veggie for about 20yrs (ate all the soy stuff etc). I've gone back to meat occasionally now and lay off the soya/mock meats. I only eat Organic and/or Jhatka though. The turning point for me was watching some videos/podcasts/speaking to folks on the topic.  Its not about taste either (afterall folks complain about Daal if its not cooked to your particular taste).

If you look at how mock/soya gunk is made, the ingredients etc... its basically hyper-processed junk. In the old days the mock meat ingredients were used as cheap 'fillers' in cheap meat burgers etc. Thats why they are pushing it a lot now, it has high profit margins when sold as 'mock meat'/meat alternatives (check out the cost per 100g of fake meat to real meat in the shops).

Is it more eco? Not really, look into the effect of a soy field on the environment, compared to a field with cows/goats etc in it. One will be a very diverse ecosystem.. the other (soy field) will be pretty dead (not biodivese), the soil will be rubbish etc. Plus everytime it is ploughed or harvested, thousands/maybe millions of creatures are killed per acre (above and below ground). As opposed to a few cows, pigs, chickens, goats in a field.

Your body is the result of millions of years of evolution...if you give it an organic steak or a say hyper processed Linda McCartney Sausage, which one will it recognise/understand what to do with it (hence your bloating with soy stuff etc)

Hmmm very interesting,  still have not tried meat substitute,  and it wouldn't be a daily thing even if I did. 

My mum used to make soya chunks in a thuri,  which was pretty nice. But I have been a meat eater all my life, was watching this program about undigested meat that is just stuck in your body. So thought I'd give up on the meat or try at least.

You should watch some of the videos on Net and documentaries which show how cruelly/badly treated these farmed animal are.

Yeah I have seen ones about chickens , being pumped with all types of things and chick's getting killed.

There's a lot of Vegan alternatives now, some are pretty decent and other's are trash but it all depends how you cook them. We don't use many Quorn products anymore, their Vegan range aren't really that good, our kids like the Birds eye Vegan range, they do fake chicken peices and thing's that could pretty easily replace meat in any Daal/Sabzi, if you cook them the way they tell you they end up being pretty bland, the Beyond Meat stuff is really nice but it's pretty expensive but if you're coming from a meat eating background then they are probably more appropriate because they are aimed at people wanting to reduce meat in-take.
