A security guard at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus (UBCO) who died after being assaulted on the job Saturday has now been identified as 24-year-old Harmandeep Kaur.

Kaur, who was originally from India, came to Canada in 2015 and, according to a spokesperson for the Kaur family, was excited about pursuing an education, and eventually a family, in B.C.

She had just received her permanent residency and was considering studying to be a paramedic. While working security to try and put money away for school, she was attacked on the Kelowna campus by a male university worker.

The unidentified attacker was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital, with police saying he could face murder charges.

Nathan Skolski, a spokesperson for UBC Okanagan, said he expects the university will provide an update on this incident in the coming days. Principal Lesley Cormack said in a statement the school is working closely with the RCMP and its partners to provide assistance required in the investigation. The statement calls the attack an isolated incident that did not involve students and does not pose a continuing risk to campus safety.

“We are devastated that something like this would happen on our campus. My heart and my thoughts, and those of everyone at UBCO, go to the family,” Dr. Cormack said. “... There will be plenty of opportunity to try to understand the circumstances of this tragedy over the coming weeks but our immediate priority is to support the family and individuals affected.”

She had just received her permanent residency and was considering studying to be a paramedic. While working security to try and put money away for school, she was attacked on the Kelowna campus by a male university worker.

The unidentified attacker was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital, with police saying he could face murder charges.

She was from Kapurthala, Panjab. 

SikhPA tweeted funds collected will be used for her funeral, possible legal costs and to help her family travel from Panjab to Canada.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder in the fatal attack on security guard Harmandeep Kaur at UBC Okanagan in February.

The second-degree murder charge was approved Tuesday against Dante Ognibene-Hebbourn of Kelowna, according to a statement from the RCMP.

 

"This has been a difficult few weeks for the community in the aftermath of the tragic events of Feb. 26.  The response in support to the woman's family has been remarkable," Kelowna RCMP Insp. Beth McAndie said in the statement.

Ognibene-Hebbourn has been arrested and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

 

Kaur was 24 years old when she was attacked while working a shift at the Kelowna university campus.

Members of Kaur's family have said she came to Canada from India in 2015. A spokesperson said she was working at the university to raise money to go back to school, potentially to become a paramedic.

She received her permanent residency just weeks before she died.
