Guru Nanak Gurdwara Singh Sabha is the oldest Gurdwara Sahib in Preston, Lancashire, UK. Established in 1966, the Gurdwara Sahib has been a special place of learning and worship for Sikhs community and alike.

Situated in the heart of the city centre and close to the university, the Gurdwara Sahib has served both the international students and the homeless community in Preston. Over the past decade the demands from the building have grown however, the community has been restricted due to costs of the project and the state of the building.

During the Gurpurab's (traditional celebrations), weddings and larger events, the Sadh Sangat have to make the use of the car park (see photo) to accommodate the Langar service. The larger hall in the building cannot be used due to asbestos present in the roof and the condition of the room..

However, the issue of having an asbestos roofing has now been rectified and the new Divaan Hall (once completed) is envisaged to be two times bigger than the current one. This would allow the current Divaan Hall to be used as the Langar Hall

Therefore, we are humbly requesting your donations and contributions towards the upcoming internal and upgrade work. Please forward this appeal to others in your network to help build the building a safer and more open space for worship and community gatherings.

If you are from Sangat there, do you trust that any funds will go to the stated cause?

Please tell the Sangat on here, more about the good work that the Gurdwara does, e.g do they do Panjabi classes, any martial arts training?

I know the gurdwara sahib and the Sangat there. I can assure you that , all of the funds are going to be used for the gurdwara sahib refurbishment. Gurdwara sahib is located in the town centre and close to the Preston train station. Therefore, compared to other UK gurdwaras which are more in residential areas, this gurdwara and the sangat makes an immediate impression on the visitors of Preston, whether they are sikhs or not.

Here are some examples of how gurdwara sahib makes a big difference in people's lives in Preston and tries to engage with non sikhs.

• As well as feeding the homeless, they have Punjabi classes etc.

Today at the gurdwara sahib there will be a workshop for kids to tie dastars.

They have been approved by the council and some work has already been carried out e.g. the asbestos roof has been removed.

I don't think I'll have the time and am usually quite averse to going northwards. But, if there is brickwork to be done, I'd jump on it.

Being brought up in a small town with a smaller Sikh population, I can understand how Gurughar plays an important role in our lives. I highly encourage the sangat to donate towards this sewa work.

It is disheartening to see that not much has been donated by the online community since I posted this topic. There was a time when we would raise tens of thousands on the forum.
