FORUM RULES & GUIDELINES

====================

The SikhSangat Team has had a discussion about the moderation rules of the forum over the past few years. We have all agreed to the following moderation system/rules and have committed to follow this system for the betterment of the sangat and to provide more clarity about our guidelines. We want to make this available for all the members so there's no confusion as to why they were given a warning or placed under moderation. Remember, we don't have enmity towards anyone we all seek one purpose and all have a common goal. We want to make this site as best as possible according to gurmat and want to bring forth the qualities of gursikhi like peace, love and compassion in the topics being discussed, the only thing we request is for all members post with love and humility.

WARNINGS

Two warnings will be given to a user to modify his/her behavior and adhere to the forum rules. Warnings may be given without any contact. After 2 warnings, user account will be put for moderation for 30 days. Moderation will be lifted upon the discretion of SikhSangat. User may write to the Admin (SikhSangat@live.com) stating why he/she should be taken off of moderation and how they will strive to make better posts.

BAN

Upon receiving 2 warnings, if the user continues to violate forum rules, it will result in the user being banned from the forum indefinitely without any contact. User may write to the Admin (SikhSangat@live.com) stating why he/she should be taken off of BAN and how they will strive to make better posts. IF we lift the ban, user will stay under moderation until further notice.

OTHER RULES

====================

BRINKERS = NOT ALLOWED

I'm within the rules. Some users find sport in seeing how close they can get to being thrown off a message board. The Admins/sewadars will often have a set of rules (typically known as the "Terms of Service" like this one) which specify how people should conduct themselves. One type of poster, a "brinker", attempts to get as near to the edge as he or she possibly can without actually going over.

Unlike the troll, who directs his or her efforts at the users of a system, the brinker is actually toying with the SikhSangat. He or she can be a thorn in the side of the administrator, holding the good name and popularity of the system at stake. Administrators hesitate to throw people off the system unless they have broken an explicit rule.

LANGUAGE

Although we do our best to cater for all, we do have certain limitations on SikhSangat. Language is one of them because you will notice the vast majority of posts are in English which has a universal base as it is one of the most used languages in the world. Communication is a problem in this world. It is one of the main causes for World Wars and poverty as well as in divorces and so on. And having taken these points into consideration, SikhSangat would like to request to all Sangat to please use English language to your advantage and post on this forum with language that every other member can understand. We all use slang language in our day to day speaking, but the advantage of this being a forum, means you can think longer about what you want to say with more time to express it. Extreme use of slang language is confusing to many members on this forum and will no longer be tolerated by moderators. Members can use Punjabi language in their posts. We will allow slang to a certain extent but SikhSangat reserve the right to choose the level allowed and will from hereon be moderating certain members more closely.

ADVERTISING

We do not allow people to post threads or to send private messages or emails to users here that advertise or solicit any services. Explicit advertising in sigs is also prohibited. Advertising, spamming and trolling is not allowed. This includes using the forum email and Private message system to spam other members. There is SikhSangat Advertisement program which can be seen here: http://sikhsangat.com/adverts

SIGNATURE RULES

Links in signatures must follow these guidelines:

  • A link and promotional text for a site that is not commercial provided the site is not against Sikhi or does not violate SikhSangat community standards. The SikhSangat.com team shall be the sole arbitrator of what does and what does not violate community standards.
  • Duplicate links to the same URL in a sig are not allowed.

Size: All signatures should not exceed the following size limits, and you can't have both text and images

  • For text signatures: 4 lines normal size, 8 lines small size and up to 90 chars per line. Font sizes above 2 are not allowed. (Blank lines count as lines.)
  • For images in signatures: 1 image up to 200 pixels wide, 75 pixels tall and 20k in size
  • Animated images in sigs are not allowed

AVATARS

Obscene images such as beheaded animals, pornography or inappropriate content (swf files) or images are not allowed.

People have not listened to my request and they keep quoting post that is directly above them. In future if i see a post that is quoting the reply directly above it, and quoting it fully then it will be deleted straight away.

from now on this is roughly the quotation length ( MAX 6 lines)

line 1

line 2

line 4

line 5

line 6

Anythign above the quoted length will be deleted.

if you really must quote someone then do so in the following manner.

Regarding bumping of topics

If someone is advertising links to another site then no discussion should take place about that site on this forum unless it is an anti-sikh site. Any updates/additions to blogs and other websites which are external to sikhsangat can only be bumped once a month, if someone posts an entry to their blog or an article on their website or adds any other content to it (pictures, videos, etc.) then this should not be posted in their topic on SikhSangat right away, one update per domain, per month.

We want to get rid of all posts that are continuously bumping other websites and blogs which leaves little or no room for discussion, this is a DISCUSSION board not an advertising board, therefore we have to make this a regulation, if one doesn't follow this their posts will automatically be deleted and possibly have their account put under quality control.

This goes for events as well, for any events that are happening in a week's time, we can allow it to be bumped, but any events whose dates are further in the future we will not allow it to be bumped, if the threads are continuously being bumped and are not following these regulations, they will be deleted.

Controversial Topics

Raag Maala: Raag Maala appears on the last Ang of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. There has been much conflict in the Panth over this for the last 150 years. Majority of the members on this forum are at young age. This is the age to learn about Sikhi so that we can follow Guru Ji's path. It is very easy for young members to go off topic and turn the debate into personal attacks which brings down the quality of the forum. Although Bani is very dear to us and we would like to see this matter resolved but many great scholars have written so much about it. Both sides have good intentions and respect Bani very much. Any insulting, jatha bashing or vulgar comments are not allowed and will result in banning the member without any notice or warning. If anyone wants to explore this topic he/she should read the books that have been written in the past and make up his/her mind. No topics about Raag Maala shall be discussed on SikhSangat Forum. Warning will be issued. We request everyone to respect each other's beliefs and learn from each other.

Kes/Keski Kakkar: Whether you believe Kes is Kakkar or Keski, the most important thing is to keep both. Kes are very important in Sikhi and a Sikh must keep his/her hair. Keski is very important to cover Kes. Both are required for a Sikh (male and female). Both sides have rehatwaan Gursikhs such as Bhai Fauja Singh Ji and Baba Jarnail Singh Ji. We all should look at their jeevans and learn from their sacrifices. Any question that does not directly go against this policy may be asked.

Mool Mantar: Mool Mantar is basically first paragraph of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The controversy is over where this paragraph ends. We (sevadars) do not find it is proper for Sikh youth to be discussing this topic as it involves very deep understanding of Gurbani. Those who fight over this topic hardly recite Mool Mantar even once in a day. Reading Bani less or more with full concentration is more important. Read as much as you enjoy.

Dasam Granth Bani: SikhSangatholds a Pro Dasam Granth stand. We believe that the Dasam Granth Sahib in its current form is the work of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. No provocative, insulting or derogatory language will be tolerated against Dasam Granth Sahib. Any topic or post questioning the authority and authenticity of the Dasam Granth will not be allowed. Not following the rule will result in complete ban without an issuance of warning.

Meat: SikhSangat.com holds an Anti-Meat stand. We feel that eating meat is immoral, unlawful and simply wrong according to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib jee. There have been numerous debates on this topic and both sides of the party have voiced their opinion ever since 2001. If you do a search on the board for the topic you will find MANY replies and topics. SikhSangat.com will not allow any topics that justify the killing of animals for food or otherwise. Any topic/post stating otherwise will be deleted. No pro-meat topics allowed on this forum.

Dasam Granth

Dasam Granth Bani: SikhSangat.com holds a Pro Dasam Granth stand. Not following the rule will result in Under moderation and possible ban without an issuance of warning.

SIGNATURE SIZE LIMIT

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki fateh!

Dear Sangat,

It has come to our attention that some of the members are not within the 'allowable' signature limit. This limit is enforced because if someone's signature is too big and they've posted several times in one topic it extends the topic over several pages and the posts go onto the next pages. As part of the forum rules/guidelines and to ensure the posts don't extend to pages upon pages we have made this topic.

The current Signature Size Limits are as follows:

http://www.sikhsanga...?showtopic=9119

All signatures should not exceed the following size limits, and you can't have both text and images

• For text signatures: 4 lines normal size, 8 lines small size and up to 90 chars per line. Font sizes above 2 are not allowed. (Blank lines count as lines.)

• For images in signatures: 1 image up to 300 pixels wide, 125 pixels tall and 20k in size

• Animated images in sigs are not allowed

If someone violates the above rule one of the sevadars will have to edit their signature so that it meets the above requirements. We don't like doing this but just having this policy in the rules/guidelines page isn't enough as many members still have almost twice the above limitation. Lets make everyone's visit to SS as pleasant as possible.

Bhul chuk muaf.

Your sevadars

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki fateh!

Quality Control

SikhSangat.com reserves the right to place any member under quality control moderation as and when they see fit. An explanation is not required under quality control moderation but all efforts will be made to send the Member a message informing them that they have been placed under QC Moderation. The duration of the moderation will be at the prerogative of the Admin/Mod team.

Sikhsangat's Stand on Meat Debate

23 September 2008

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa,

Vaheguru ji ki fateh!

Upon discussion with the admins of SikhSangat, we have decided to take an anti-meat stand, we've been thinking about this issue for a while on an individual basis and until recently we've collectively decided that this is best for the forum. We feel that eating meat is immoral, unlawful and simply wrong according to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib jee. There have been numerous discussions and debates on this topic and both sides of the party have voiced their opinions ever since the start of the site in 2001. We do not want to re-iterate the arguments against the debate. If you do a search on the board for the topic you will find MANY replies and topics on the topic and we leave the ultimate decision to your better judgment.

SikhSangat.com will not allow any topics that justify the killing of animals for food or otherwise. Any topic/post stating otherwise will be deleted.

Intelligent discourse and freedom of expression is encouraged, as long as it is exercised with responsibility. Insults made against other members on this board are not tolerated, even those made via PM. Warnings will be issued to offending members.

Gurfateh ji,

Due to our forum appearing on search engines, we cannot rely on external links to always be there. Therefore if the full text is not included then the topic becomes meaningless especially if the external link is no longer available. In addition to this, topics are supposed to generate discussion and if the users have to go away from the forum to read then they are not likely to discuss the topic here on forum.

We kindly request all of you to post news in news sub-forum section. See below topics as an example.

Wrong Format:

Right Format:

Posts in wrong format will get deleted from SikhSangat forums.

QC - Quality Control

QC is different than Under Moderation, it is implemented only to control the flow of below quality posts/replies etc. We may put new members under QC until further notice. We reserves the right to place any member under quality control moderation. An explanation is not required under quality control moderation but all efforts will be made to notify them. The duration of the moderation will be at the prerogative of the Admin.

BAN

If any user continues to violate forum rules and does agree with forum sewadars then Administrator will ban particular user indefinitely without any contact. Do not take your disagreements off the message board and into the "real world," and do not do anything to try to harm or harass any member of this message board in the "real world." SikhSangat will not responsible for any member's action BUT we will provide member's details and online activity to police officials if requested by law enforcement. This is fair warning to all members to think twice before posting. We may inquire with our legal advisors before releasing private information to such officials. We will not share any information with Indian officials on any issue at all.

We will give on real example. Office from London Police contacted us to inquire about member's activity. He provided his credentials and we validated/confirmed his credintials by calling his office. He wanted to check on ip addresses the member used during past few weeks. This was the case where young bibi ran away from home and parents were concerned about her safety. Officer contacted us and we gave them access to our system to complete the formality and help Sikh parents.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
