I went to a sikhi talk recently and the speaker ji was talking about this very thing...well this is my understanding of what he said that...

Their are layers of things which make up what you are this is the whole order that was given

Artma [soul]

Surti [Consciousness]

Chitr Gupt [hidden records]

Maan [Mind]

Sareen [body]

Gristi [Family]

Sangat

Samaag [social system/society]

Kudarat [Nature> existance]

Hukam

Ik Onkar

You are the Soul

Your soul/Artma isnt really you/yours.... I was given this example that if there is a bulb [parmatma] and that light from that is shone the beam of light [Artma]. If someone was to put a glass box [sareen] around that beam you wouldnt say that now the glass box owns the beam of light?

Your Maan is the Instrument of change and the source of throughts and remeberance.

Your artma is your soul which is carried through all the life forms.
