The mind is perhaps the most powerful tool we have in this world, and more often than not can be the sole thing to prevent us from walking on the path of Sikhi. It’s a tough game to play with the mind, but we just need to have faith, and push…

Thought I would share this with you.

At times during our bhagti, we find our mind wondering, thinking things that we never imagined we’d think – things that we don’t even realise enter our consciousness. – We suddenly remember that we have a million and one other things to be getting on with instead of our paath. We start to plan what we’re going to do once we’ve finished our paath – heck, sometimes we start thinking about what we’re going to do in years to come.

Battling with the mind, wanting for it to stay focused is one of the hardest things to conquer –

Man Jeete Jag Jeet – we conquer our mind, we conquer the world – it seems too easy, but is so hard…

At the time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, some kathri (farmers) came to see Guru Ji and talk with them about their mind. “Guru Ji” they said, “We’re trying to do out nitnem, but when we sit down to start, the worst possible thoughts begin to enter our minds, we try and focus our mind, but it runs away, into another world, and we don’t have it in us to fight with it”

Guru Ji asked the Kathri’s, “So what is it you do when you lose your will to fight” the kathri’s replied, “We stop out paath”.

Guru Ji thought for some while, and then asked “You’re Kathri’s, do you have horses by any chance” to which they replied, “why yes of course”. Guru Ji then began to question and explain, “When you horse gets ill, what do you do?” The Khatri’s said, “We make a masala for it, full with antidotes, and feed it to the horse”. Guru Ji again questioned, “So, you make the masala and put it out for the horse in a bhata and he eats it?” The Khatri’s shook there heads, “No Guru Ji, the horse does not like the taste of the masala, it is very bitter”. Guru Ji then proceeded to ask how the Khatri’s went about making the horse eat the masala. “What we must do Guru Ji” they said, “At first we must take the masala in our hands and make a fist, then one of us will try and appease the horse while the other will enter his fist into the mouth of the horse” Guru Ji listened intently, and continued to question, “So, the horse will eat the masala out of your fist?” – Again, the Khatri’s shook their heads, “No Guru Ji, the horse will screech, he will cry and wince, he will struggle and strain and do all he can to try and eject my fist from his mouth. Eventually, the horse will tire and realise the only way we will leave him be, will be if he takes the masala and eats it”

Guru Ji smiled, and advised his Sikhs, “Yes the horse will do all he can to refrain from taking in what is good for him, he will scream and shout and run from the medicine he knows will cure him of all his pains… but eventually he tires. The mind too, is a horse. It is determined to stay away, and not take in this medicine of naam. But amidst the screaming, shouting, the beating the mind will take, eventually it will tire – when it tires, it will realise that it will have to take this medicine of naam, and only then will it be eased”

Sometimes, we tire, and let our mind win, we don’t try and pull our mind towards the medicine, we give up all too easily – what we forget is Maharaj says through Bhai Gurdas Ji, “Charan Sharan Gur Ek Penda Jai Chal, Satgur Kot Penda Agai Hoi Let Hai” – Sitting down and just trying to focus the mind is just a small step – try and focus and we be able to see Maharaj taking those thousands of steps towards us.

I’m the biggest one to fail in this world – my mind seems to wonder off to places I never knew existed especially when I am sitting down to do my paath, but faith in my Beloved Vaheguru means that I know one day… one day…

The title description says a HORSE 4 A mind...mayB IT means hoarse though...I dunno...I've always been pretty good @ spelling!
