SHALOK:

Ones destiny is activated, when one chants the Lords Name, through perfect good fortune. Fruitful is that moment, O Nanak, when one obtains the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of the Lord of the Universe. || 1 || Its value cannot be estimated; it brings peace beyond measure. O Nanak, that time alone is approved, when my Beloved meets with me. || 2 || PAUREE: Tell me, what is that time, when I shall find God? Blessed and auspicious is that moment, and that destiny, when I shall find the Lord of the Universe. Meditating on the Lord, twenty-four hours a day, my minds desires are fulfilled. By great good fortune, I have found the Society of the Saints; I bow and touch their feet. My mind thirsts for the Blessed Vision of the Lords Darshan; Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. || 15 ||

English Translation :

SHALOK, FIFTH MEHL:

Millions of obstacles stand in the way of one who forgets the Name. O Nanak, night and day, he croaks like a raven in a deserted house. || 1 || FIFTH MEHL: Beauteous is that season, when I am united with my Beloved. I do not forget Him for a moment or an instant; O Nanak, I contemplate Him constantly. || 2 || PAUREE: Even brave and mighty men cannot withstand the powerful and overwhelming army which the five passions have gathered. The ten organs of sensation attach even detached renunciates to sensory pleasures. They seek to conquer and overpower them, and so increase their following. The world of the three dispositions is under their influence; no one can stand against them. So tell me how can the fort of doubt and the moat of Maya be overcome? Worshipping the Perfect Guru, this awesome force is subdued. I stand before Him, day and night, with my palms pressed together. || 15 ||

The hukamnama today is by Bhagat Namdevji Maharaj in the Aasaa Raag on Ang 485 of Satguru Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.

Awsw ] (485-12)

aasaa. (485-12)

Aasaa: (485-12)

man mayro gaj jihbaa mayree kaatee.

My mind is the yardstick, and my tongue is the scissors.

map map kaata-o jam kee faasee. ||1||

I measure it out and cut off the noose of death. ||1||

kahaa kara-o jaatee kah kara-o paatee.

What do I have to do with social status? What do I have to with ancestry?

raam ko naam japa-o din raatee. ||1|| rahaa-o.

I meditate on the Name of the Lord, day and night. ||1||Pause||

raaNgan raaNga-o seevan seeva-o.

I dye myself in the color of the Lord, and sew what has to be sewn.

raam naam bin gharee-a na jeeva-o. ||2||

Without the Lord’s Name, I cannot live, even for a moment. ||2||

bhagat kara-o har kay gun gaava-o.

I perform devotional worship, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

aath pahar apnaa khasam Dhi-aava-o. ||3||

Twenty-four hours a day, I meditate on my Lord and Master. ||3||

su-inay kee soo-ee rupay kaa Dhaagaa.

My needle is gold, and my thread is silver.

naamay kaa chit har sa-o laagaa. ||4||3||

Naam Dayv’s mind is attached to the Lord. ||4||3||

Bhagat Namdevji Maharaj is blessing us today with his beautiful hukamnama in the Raag Aassa. The Aassa raag, which is full of hope, full of light, full of brightness, is a very light raag, very soothing raag to the mind.

Bhagatji is saying, “man mayro gaj jihbaa mayree kaatee.” Man: my mind, mayro means mine, gaj means yardstick (something to measure), jihbaa: my tongue, mayree means mine, kaatee means scissors (cutting implement). Bhagatji is saying that to control my mind is a yardstick by which I measure how far I am getting to God. Jihbaa mayree kaatee: my tongue is a scissor. What does my tongue cut through? When my tongue is praising God what does it cut through? Map map kaata-o jam kee faasee. Map map means measuring out, kaata-o means to cut through, jam kee faasee means the noose of death. I measure out all the paaps I have done and I am cutting through them, cutting through all the sins I have done and eventually by repeating God’s name I will cut through the noose of death and become immortal.

When I become immortal: kahaa kara-o jaatee: kahaa kara-o means what do I have to do, jaatee means my social status, my cast, my creed, who I am: male or female. Kah means what, kara-o paatee means my lineage, my ancestry. What do I have to do with my ancestry? Nothing! My soul is beyond all of that.

Raam ko naam japa-o din raatee. Raam means the God who is pervading everywhere, ko means of, naam means name of. The name of Raam, the name of God; japa-o means to repeat, to meditate upon, din raatee means day and night. I am meditating continuously, day and night, upon God’s name. rahaa-o: bhagatji says pause and think about this.

RaaNgan raaNga-o seevan seeva-o. raaNgan raaNga-o means to colour yourself in dye, seevan seeva-o means to sow what needs to be sown. I dye my mind in God’s name, in the colour of God’s love. seevan seeva-o: I have sown love into my heart, into my being. This has two meanings. What it means firstly is that on a spiritual level Bhagatji is saying, “My mind is coloured with the love of God and I have sown God’s name into my heart.” But it also means Bhagatji is saying, “Whilst doing the worldly work which I do such as dying and colouring and sowing; what do I do? Raam naam bin gharee-a na jeeva-o.” Raam naam means the name of God, bin means without, gharee-a means one instant, one moment, na means cannot, jeeva-o means to live. Without God’s name I cannot live for even an instant.

Bhagat kara-o har kay gun gaava-o. The way I perform devotional worship is not by bowing down to some stone, to some idol. The way I do it is; har means Waheguru, God, kay means of, gun means praises, gaava-o means to sing of. I sing the praises of God and that is my devotional worship.

Aath pahar apnaa khasam Dhi-aava-o. Aath pahar means twenty four hours a day, apnaa means mine, khasam means master, Dhi-aava-o means to meditate upon. Twenty four hours a day I meditate upon my master.

Su-inay kee soo-ee; su-inay means gold, kee means of, soo-ee means needle. My needle is made out of gold. What needle is this? This is the needle of focusing your attention on Waheguru, lovingly focusing yourself upon God. That is the golden needle. Bhagatji is using metaphors here. That is the golden needle. Rupay kaa Dhaagaa; rupa means silver, kaa means of, Dhaagaa means thread. The thread which I put through this needle, the needle of God’s love, is serving the Guru. By putting that thread through that needle what happens? Naamay kaa chit har sa-o laagaa. naamay kaa of Namdevji, chit means consciousness, har means Waheguru, sa-o means with, laagaa means to be attached. By putting the thread through the needle of God’s love, by putting the thread through serving the Guru, without serving the Guru you cannot get there. You need the Guru to get to God. By using that thread and that needle my mind becomes attached to God.

Bhagatji is saying don’t waste one minute without remembering God. Every minute we waste without remembering God is death for us. Every minute we waste is death.

English Translation :

RAAMKALEE, FIFTH MEHL:

The body is a patch-work of threads. The muscles are stitched together with the needles of the bones. The Lord has erected a pillar of water. O Yogi, why are you so proud? || 1 || Meditate on your Lord Master, day and night. The patched coat of the body shall last for only a few days. || 1 || Pause || Smearing ashes on your body, you sit in a deep meditative trance. You wear the ear-rings of mine and yours. You beg for bread, but you are not satisfied. Abandoning your Lord Master, you beg from others; you should feel ashamed. || 2 || Your consciousness is restless, Yogi, as you sit in your Yogic postures. You blow your horn, but still feel sad. You do not understand Gorakh, your guru. Again and again, Yogi, you come and go. || 3 || He, unto whom the Master shows Mercy unto Him, the Guru, the Lord of the World, I offer my prayer. One who has the Name as his patched coat, and the Name as his robe, O servant Nanak, such a Yogi is steady and stable. || 4 || One who meditates on the Master in this way, night and day, finds the Guru, the Lord of the World, in this life. || 1 || Second Pause || 2 || 13 ||

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
