  2. SOURCE: http://singhstation.net/2016/10/3-nihangs-killed-clash-gurdwara/ Three Nihangs were killed and seven injured in firing between two factions of the Shiromani Panth Akali Baba Budha Dal over the control of a gurdwara at Mallan village in Muktsar district on Wednesday. The two groups exchanged at least 70 gunshots and torched two vehicles during the clash that lasted for around 45 minutes at Gurdwara Sri Ramsar Sahib. Four policemen present at the spot failed to avert the incident. The deceased have been identified as Naib Singh, 65, his grandson Ranjit Singh, 27, and Amritpal Singh, 37, all belonging to the Shiromani Panth Akali Baba Budha Dal faction headed by Balbir Singh. The clash took place when Makhan Singh, belonging to the rival faction headed by Joginder Singh, reached the gurdwara along with his supporters to wrest its control on Wednesday morning. Makhan Singh, who had been overseeing the gurdwara affairs for the past several years, was allegedly threatened and thrown out of the premises by Naib Singh and his aides the previous night. The gurdwara owns six acres of land in Mallan and three acres in Rammania village. As Makhan Singh’s group wielding arms and sharp-edged weapons attacked the rival group around 10am, Naib Singh and his men tried to take shelter inside the gurdwara premises, but three of them were killed, while six others received multiple bullet injuries. Muktsar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Gill said a cop present at the spot managed to lock the main gate, but the attackers scaled the boundary wall and entered the gurdwara premises. By the time additional police force reached the gurdwara, the assailants managed to flee. Cops, however, were able to recover weapons used in the crime. “We are probing the matter. There is no previous record of any conflict between the two factions over the control of the gurdwara. We are still verifying the facts,” said Gill. No case had been registered till the filing of this report.

  10. Sikh Political prisoner, Devinderpal Singh Bhullar was on Monday acquitted in a 1992 Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) case registered against him at the Batala Sadar police station. Charges under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act and the Explosives Act were also slapped on Bhullar in the case that pertains to an encounter after a police party was ambushed by a group of militants. The designated TADA court of Surinder Singh which heard the case, dismissed the chargesheet filed by the Batala police and discharged Bhullar for want of evidence. The court accepted the plea of Bhullar’s counsel that there was no direct evidence to suggest his client’s involvement and neither were there any witnesses in the case. The chargesheet was filed by police in February and the former militant was granted bail by the TADA court in March in the case. The verdict by the designated TADA court will pave the way for Bhullar to apply for parole that was denied to him as he had not been acquitted in the Batala case. Bhullar can now move an application before the government seeking parole. He has remained behind bars since his deportation to India in 1995 followed by his arrest in a blast case. Bhullar had already sought parole after he was granted bail in the case on March 3 on surety bond of Rs 50,000. Bhavandeep Singh Sidhu of the United Akali Dal and Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa Sangharsh Committee welcomed the verdict by the court. “We expect Prof. Bhullar to be released from jail within a few days now,” he said. “This will allow Prof. Bhullar to apply for parole, however we hope that the 1993 case against him by Maninderjeet Bittu does not cause hurdles,” he added. Despite his acquittal in the TADA case, Bhullar will continue to remain under detention for his involvement in the September 1993 blast outside the headquarters of the All India Youth Congress (AIYC) in New Delhi, resulting in death of eight persons. He was sentenced to death by a Delhi court in the case. His plea for parole will be considered after he moves an application seeking the same. Though the Supreme Court had upheld his death penalty but later it was commuted to life term on medical grounds. Bhullar is currently undergoing treatment at the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital here. He was not present in the TADA court that heard his bail application. He was admitted to the psychiatry ward of the hospital on June 12 last year after he was transferred on medical grounds from a hospital in New Delhi. He had complained of depression and other psychological problems. He was under detention at the Tihar Jail and was subsequently shifted to a hospital on the directions of the Supreme Court which took note of his mental condition Full News: http://singhstation.net/2016/04/prof-bhullar-acquitted-in-1992-tada-case/
  11. Full News: http://singhstation.net/2016/04/no-sarbat-khalsa-during-vaisakhi-2016/ Amritsar: The proposed second Sarbat Khalsa (grand congregation of Sikhs), which was scheduled to be held by various Sikh groups on the occasion of Vaiskahi on April 13, has been postponed in the absence of Sarbat Khalsa appointed Acting Jathedar Bhai Dhian Singh Mand, who is currently in Nabha jail. “Mand is in jail so we have decided to postpone the Sarbat Khalsa, but we will hold a Panthic conference at Takht Damdama Sahib on Vaisakhi,” Panthic Sewa Lehar president Baljit Singh Daduwal told media on Thursday. While addressing a press conference Bhai Baljit Singh Daduwal and Bhai Amrik Singh Ajnala, who were appointed as Jathedar of Takhat Damdama Sahib and Takhat Kesgarh Sahib respectively, said that it was not feasible to hold Sarbat Khalsa 2016 on Vaisakhi as most of the organizers of the Sarbat Khalsa 2015 were arrested by the Punjab police in sedition case registered after November 10 event at Chabba village. Daduwal added that they were hopeful that Mand would be released soon following which they would hold a meeting to chalk out their Vaisakhi programme. “Since we wouldn’t be left with much time to make arrangements of the Sarbat Khalsa, its time and venue could be changed,” he said, adding that the announcement of Sarbat Khalsa would be made on Vaisakhi. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) general secretary Jarnail Singh Sakhira said, “There is much enthusiasm about the Sarbat Khalsa in Sikh circles. It is postponed since our acting jathedar is in jail but we will make an announcement soon.”
  12. Source: http://singhstation.net/2016/03/police-turn-up-at-malaysian-gurdwara-agm/ Police turned up at an Ipoh gurdwara, probably the first such incident in recent decades, during an annual general meeting (AGM) today that saw dozens of members turned away due to lapsed membership. “We had called the police to ensure safety of the Sanggat. Some members had become physical, some were rowdy before the AGM began,” Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Ipoh (WGSI) committee president Amarjit Singh Gill told Media. It is understood some members had become upset by what was deemed as an arbitrary ruling by the committee on their membership status. “Some members may have felt this was not a fair deal. Their membership had been struck off without any proper and prior advisory,” one member who attended the meeting told media. This year is a non-election year at WGSI. Amarjit had won the president post unopposed at last year’s AGM. The position would be up for grabs at the AGM 2017. WGSI constitution allows a president to serve two consecutive temrs of two-years each. Prior to him, Bhajan Singh had served as WGSI committee president for four years. 14. Source: http://singhstation.net/2015/11/canadian-sikh-mla-manmeet-bhullar-dies-in-a-car-accident/ Calgary – Greenway MLA Manmeet Bhullar, killed Monday afternoon in a accident north of Red Deer, was a community leader who served his constituents tirelessly, colleague and former Alberta Solicitor General Jonathan Denis told the Sun. “He was loyal as the day is long — I’m still in utter shock.” “Manmeet was salt of the earth,” he said. Early reports suggest Bhullar was struck and killed by a transport truck while outside his vehicle trying to assist the driver of a car that had crashed on the QEII north of Red Deer. Heavy snow made the highway between Calgary and Edmonton a treacherous drive Monday, with emergency services kept busy responding to numerous crashes throughout the day. Born in southeast Calgary on March 1, 1980, Manmeet Singh Bhullar spent his formative years in the city’s Whitehorn neighbourhood, graduating from Lester B. Pearson high school in 1998. He earned his law degree in 2011 from the University of Windsor. Bhullar first rose to prominence as an advocate for Calgary’s growing Sikh community, founding Calgary’s Dashmesh Mission in 1999, providing support for at-risk Sikh youth in Calgary. He later helped found the non-denominational Inspire youth group, as well as the city’s Walking Hunger Away campaign. Bhullar’s political involvement began in 2003 as part of Jim Prentice’s failed leadership bid for the federal Progressive Conservative party.

  16. Source: http://singhstation.net/2015/11/punjab-govt-urges-centre-to-ban-sikh-channel/ Chandigarh – Threatening the Right of expression & Freedom of Speech, the Punjab government has decided to crack down on Sikh websites, internet channels and social media pages which they believe are promoting the Khalistan ideology. In a recent move, Punjab Police have asked the Centre to take “necessary steps” to ban the Sikh Channel website in India for spreading “hate and seditious material”. On the direction of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal, who also holds the home portfolio, the counter intelligence wing of Punjab Police has been directed by to prepare a list of all such websites, channels, Facebook pages and You Tube videos that Govt labels as “seditious” content. The government is targeting Sikh websites, which are promoting the Khalistan Movement, and contains pictures and graphic description describing “police atrocities” during the post 1978-1984 period. In many such websites, police officers and many political leaders have been referred to as “dogs” and the “biggest” enemies of the “Sikh quam”. According to HT, “We have told the department of electronics and information and technology (DIETY) that the channel “Sikhchannel.com” is hosting provocative messages by individuals residing in the UK, Australia and Canada. These individuals are offering lakhs of dollars to those who will kill cops who worked during the days of terrorism and other religious and political leaders of Punjab. This is fuelling unrest and could actually push gullible youngsters on the wrong path,” said a senior police officer. Since these websites are hosted outside India, the state government had to approach the Union government to ban these. “The report we have sent will be forwarded to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (ICERT). It can, ban the website immediately if the contents are dangerous while sending the case to a committee which then goes through the content and recommends a ban or no-ban order. For the time being, Sikhchannel.com is not accessible but the final ban orders are awaited,” added the officer. The state government is also encouraged by the ban on the Facebook page of ‘Sikhs for Justice’, a US-based human rights group,. which was upheld by a US court on Wednesday.
  17. Source: SGPC Approaches Bhai Pinderpal Singh to be Akal Takht Jathedar Amritsar Sahib – Bhai Pinderpal Singh ji, who natively hails from Tharwa Majra village in Karnal (Haryana), lives in Ludhiana. Sources say he is being persuaded by the SGPC and other Sikh bodies to head the Akal Takht Sahib. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is contemplating to pick eminent Sikh kathavachak (preacher) Giani Pinderpal Singh (49) as the Akal Takht jathedar to replace the beleaguered Giani Gurbachan Singh. The development comes in the backdrop of the controversial decision taken at Sarbat Khalsa 2015 to ‘appoint’ Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara as the Akal Takht jathedar. As per reports, speculation is rife in Sikh circles that a person like Pinderpal would be acceptable to Sikhs in India as well as abroad, be it moderate or hardliners, to head the highest temporal seat of the community. “A person like him (Bhai Pinderpal Singh) can certainly help bring the Sikh community out of the current crisis, but it remains to be seen whether he would accept the post of the Akal Takht head or not,” said SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, adding that it was premature to reach any conclusion. In August 2008, he was approached by the SGPC to take over as the Akal Takht jathedar after the ouster of then jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, but he refused the offer. Talking to HT on the phone, Bhai Pinderpal Singh ji said, “In the current situation, there is an acute deficit of trust and faith among the Sikhs. No Sikh believes in the other. Moreover, when there are two jathedars (one appointed by the SGPC, the other by the ‘Sarbat Khalsa’), it is very difficult for both to prove who is the real one.” Evading queries on being approached to head the Akal Takht, he said a priest could not be a leader. He got upset with the SGPC when he was told late last month to wind up his scheduled 10-day ‘katha’ on the fourth day because of his comments on the Panthic crisis, made at Manji Sahib on the premises of the Golden Temple. YOUR OPINION: Do you think Bhai Pinder Singh ji should accept the offer to be New Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar?
  18. FULL READ: Sarbat Khalsa 2015 – The Good, Not so Great and the Bad! Over half a million Sikhs gathered at historic Baba Naudh Singh Gurduara today. Who knows how many more Sikhs watched and followed the proceedings via TV, live streaming and social media. Something that many of us thought would never occur in our lives just actually happened. 13 Resolutions passed (for the full text please see: Official Resolutions from Sarbat Khalsa 2015). So where do we go from here. Well first, let’s look at Sarbat Khalsa 2015. The Good: 1. Legitimacy of Sarbat Khalsa – This Sarbat Khalsa’s legitimacy was being called into question long before it began; that has only intensified now. Was this a perfect Sarbat Khalsa? No, far from it but we must keep in mind too that hundreds of thousands of Kaurs and Singhs came to Chabba Pind despite government persecution and harassment. A half million Sikhs travelled from across South Asia and beyond to come to Baba Naudh Singh Gurduara which is remarkable considering our circumstances and the timeline we were working with. One day, a true, representative Sarbat Khalsa with representation of all Panthik regional groups and organizations will occur but this was an incredibly inspiring start. This may not have been perfect or ideal, but it was a true gathering of the Sikh Nation. 2. The Resolutions are (generally) great. If we ignore the first resolution (which I know is the most important in the short term), the resolutions were well thought out, expressed in accordance with the spirit of Gurmat and are not completely impossible to implement. Am I happy with them all? No. Is anyone? No. That’s the whole point of consensus based democracy. Nobody in the Panth can ever be completely happy. There’s always going to be issues some of us would have wanted discussed. Things that we feel went too far or not far enough. That’s a good thing, not a bad thing. This is how Sarbat Khalsas are supposed to work. Full Read: http://singhstation.net/2015/11/sarbat-khalsa-2015-the-good-not-so-great-and-the-bad/
  19. Source: http://singhstation.net/2015/10/sit-recommendation-former-faridkot-ssp-charanjit-sharma-suspended/ Moga – Punjab Deputy chief ministerSukhbir Singh Badal today ordered the suspension of Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma with immediate effect for “lapses ” in the line of duty. The suspension has been ordered following a recommendation of the SIT formed after the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Faridkot district some time back. The SIT headed by ADGP IPS Sahota, Director Bureau of Investigations, went into the entire sequence of events following the disappearance of the saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji from Faridkot. Sharma was SSP Faridkot when Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji was stolen from a gurdwara there, an official release said here. He was presently posted as SSP Moga. http://singhstation.net/2015/10/sit-recommendation-former-faridkot-ssp-charanjit-sharma-suspended/ Though the government said the suspension had been ordered following a recommendation of SIT formed to probe sacrilege of the holy book in Faridkot, sources say DGP Sumedh Singh Saini was summoned at the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s residence while the core committee meeting was on, and the decision to suspend the officer was taken thereon. The members of the committee reportedly asked the DGP why the incident of theft of Guru Granth Sahib was not taken up seriously at the highest level on time. The DGP is learnt to have stated there that the SSP did not report the matter to him. The members then demanded that he be punished, following which a decision to suspend him was taken. Sources said the members also spoke about the civil and police bureaucracy in Punjab getting out of control and the need to rein them in. To quell the disquiet, SAD president and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal and SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar suggested that the SGPC members and Akali workers should initiate “akhand paths” in gurdwaras across the state. Earlier in the evening, a delegation of top BJP leaders, including state president Kamal Sharma, former presidents Ashwani Sharma and Rajinder Bhandari and ministers Madan Mohan Mittal, Surjit Jiyani and Chunni Lal Bhagat, met Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and extended support “for any action the government felt necessary to trace those involved in the sacrilege incident”. It is learnt that the BJP delegation stressed that the government should act effectively to ensure that no one challenges the state’s hard-earned peace.
