  1. On the 8th August 1922, during the British Raaj in India, the police arrested five Singhs for cutting Acacia wood for Guru-Ka-Langar (free community kitchen) from uncultivated land attached to Gurdwara Guru Ka Bagh, Sri Anandpur Sahib. Under the British Raaj law, everyone was sentenced to a fine of fifty rupees and imprisoned for six months on the charge of stealing wood from the land of the Hindu Mahants, who had taken management and control of the Sikh Gurdwara from the time the Sikhs had fled to the jungles during the barbaric rule of the Mughals. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee started an agitation against the decision of the Government. It was Gurdwara land and Sikhs had the right to cut down wood from it for Langar. The additional police superintendent started beating the Sikh protestors with clubs. On the 13th September 1922, the beatings and abuse were stopped, with the help of Reverend C.F. Andrews and after a number of Singhs were arrested and sent to prisons.

One day a squad of army pensioners led by Subedaar Amar Singh Dhaliwal from Kapurthala district courted arrest. Magistrate Aslam Khan sentenced those Singhs to imprisonment of two and a half years and fined them each one hundred rupees each. Those Singhs were boarded on a train from Amritsar to Attak on the night of the 29th October 1922. The train stopped at Rawalpindi on 30th October and moved on after change of train staff, and fueling up the train with water.

That day, the Sikh Sangat of Gurdwara Panja Sahib prepared to do sewa of the Jatha of Singhs who were held as prisoners on the train. They prepared food and planned to serve food and drink to the prisoners. On the morning of 31st October, the Sikh Sangat took the Langar to the railway station and stood waiting for the train to arrive. The stationmaster at Panja Sahib announced to the Sikh Sangat waiting to serve Langar to Singhs on the train, "The train shall not stop at this station. You have made these arrangements for nothing." Bhai Karam Singh Ji replied, "Baba Nanak had stopped a mountain with one hand. Can his Sikhs not stop a train?"

At ten o'clock, seeing the train approaching, Bhai Karam Singh Ji lied down on the railway line. Bhai Partap Singh Ji joined him on alongside Bhai Ganga Singh, Bhai Charan Singh, Bhai Nihal Singh, Bhai Tara Singh, Bhai Fakir Singh, Bhai Kalyan Singh and many other Singhs and Singhnian squatted on the track. Seeing the Gursikhs laying down on the track, the train driver blew the whistle time and again but the Gursikhs did not falter, they did not budge as if they had not heard the whistle at all. "Waheguru, Waheguru, Waheguru…" (Wondrous Lord…) could be heard repeated and and vibrated the air. The train engine grounded the bones of Bhai Karam Singh Ji and Bhai Partap Singh Ji to pieces and the other Gursikhs suffered injuries. The train had stopped!

Bhai Partap Singh Ji told the Sangat trying to tend his injuries, "Serve Langar to the hungry Singhs on the train first. You can take care of us afterwards." The train halted for one and a half hours. The Sangat of Panja Sahib served the Singhs on the train whole-heartedly and then turned to the injured. Bhai Karam Singh Ji, thirty year old son of Bhai Bhagwan Daas Mahant of Sri Kesgarh Sahib died after a few hours. On the next day Bhai Partap Singh Ji, twenty-four years of age, son of Bhai Saroop Singh, a goldsmith of Akaal Garh, Gujranwala, attained shaheedi (martyrdom). Before attaining shaheedi he recited the Salokh (on ang 1365 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji):

    ਕਬੀਰ ਸੰਤ ਮੂਏ ਕਿਆ ਰੋਈਐ ਜੋ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

Kabīr sanṯ mūė kiā roīai jo apunė garihi jāė.

O Kabeer! There is no need to cry or feel sad at the death of a Saint (Gurmukh); because he is just going back to his home where no-one can remove him (meaning, the Gurmukh is now forever absorbed in the Presence of Waheguru).

    ਰੋਵਹੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਬਾਪੁਰੇ ਜੁ ਹਾਟੈ ਹਾਟ ਬਿਕਾਇ ॥੧੬॥

Rovhu sākaṯ bāpurė jo hātai hāt bikāė. ||16||

(If you wish to cry or feel sorry then) cry for the wretched, faithless cynic, who is separated from Waheguru, (in exchange for his bad actions) he is sold from store to store (meaning, he suffers in reincarnation). ||16||

    (Ang 1365)

And he instructed his 18 years old wife that never cry over his death otherwise his sacrifice would be wasted. It is said Mata Ji, wife of Shaheed Partap Singh Ji, never cried her whole live and bravely recited Gaddi the Chhand, poetry, written in honour of these great Train Shaheeds and was also engrossed in 'Naam Simran'

When the train-driver was asked the reason for stopping the train, he replied, "When the train hit the Singhs lying on the track, vacuum lever dropped out of my hand and the train stopped. I did not apply the brakes."

May we all learn and be inspired by the courage and dedication of the Sikhs of Panja Sahib in this incident (Saka). Look at the love these Sikhs had not just for their Guru, but for the Sikhs of their Guru. Seeing a poor man’s mouth as the Guru’s Golak (deposit box) they want to the extreme and willingness to give up their lives but not falter in their duty to feed the hungry and help their fellow Sikh brothers. We can all learn something from this.

Let us look at our own lives, let us look at the state of our Gurdwara and local Sikh community. What is it that those Sikhs at Panja Sahib had, but we don’t have today? We all love the Guru, but how far are we willing to follow and respect the Guru? Those Sikhs had the power, support and strength of Amrit, keeping Gurmat Rehat (Sikh discipline), Naam Abhiyaas, not just reading Gurbani but contemplating and enshrining Gurbani within their hearts, and full faith & allegiance to the Guru Granth Sahib and the Guru Khalsa Panth.

  2. This is an incomplete article about Bhai Sangha, which I wrote with the help of some my info, jsingh123's info etc.

Shaheed Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha was born and brought up in the village Sangha in district Amritsar. He joined the BTOFK under Shaheed Bhai Gurbachan Singh Manochal. After some daring acts and his commitment he was made one of the groups main Generals. Baba Manochahal decided to make a trip to Pakistan to secure arms for the Singhs. In his absence, he appointed Bhai Mohinder Singh, his brother, to supervise operations. When arms arrived, Bhai Mohinder Singh and Bhai Sukhwinder Singh had a disagreement about the distribution and both parted company. The touts of the Indian Government decided to make use of this disagreement. They tricked some Singhs working under Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha into shooting Bhai Mohinder Singh. They were told he was a goon and terrorizing the common people. Without checking on who they were attacking, the foolish recruits ended up shooting Bhai Mohinder Singh.

Baba Gurbachan Singh returned to Punjab to find out what had happened and many Singhs blamed Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha for the death and asked that Baba Manochal take revenge. Baba jee asked for an explanation from Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha and then after hearing the story simply said, 'What's done is done. In the future be sure about who it is you're going to shoot.' The Singhs of BTOFK were shocked that Baba jee would let his brother's death go unpunished but Baba jee insisted that the mission was Khalistan and to get caught in small personal battles was self-defeating.' Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha eventually left the Majha area and operated out of Malwa independent of Baba Manochal. Bhai Sahib was very active in the Tarn Taran area. Bhai Sahib also sold much of his ancestral land to secure arms for his 'faction'. When eventually Bhai Sangha was martyred, Baba Gurbachan Singh expressed his sadness and when others Singhs pointed out that Sangha had left BTOFK, Baba jee said, 'Our goal was the same. Everyone makes mistakes and we should over look them.' Thousands of people came at Shaheed Sukhwinder Singh Sangha's bhog.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa waheguru Ji Ki Fateh veerji thank you waheguru parnaam Shaheeda Nu Jina Jaania Dharam Tou Vaarieyah

  3. Sangha was one of the main Generals in the Bhindranwale Tiger Force, led by Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochahal. Around this time there were many touts who joined the Jujharoos to cause drifts amongst the leaders, and Sangha fell for it big time. Sangha and Baba Manochahals brother were set up in which Sangha killed Baba Manochahals brother. A lot of people also say that Sangha was jealous of Baba Manochahals brother as he was selected as second in command when Baba Manochahal was not around.

However Baba Manochahal DID forgive Sangha, and Sangha started his own group. I dont know much else about him, but Sangha was very much admired in the Tarn Taran area and thousands upon thousands turned up at his bhog.

Sangha was also looked upto as he sold a lot of his family land to fund arms for the Jujharoo Singhs.

Im pretty sure I have a lengthy article about his life somewhere, will try to post it.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh thank u veerji :s

    Operation Mand

Bhai Avtar Singh Brahma’s operations were becoming more and more daring each day and they even became a topic of discussion in India’s Home Ministry. Bhai Brahma was considered “King of the Mand” and so it was decided to send the Indian Forces there to search for him. Police Chief Ribeiro assigned “Operation Mand” to the new IG of the CRPF in Punjab, KP Gill.

The date of the operation was set for July 1986. The police expected many Sikh Fighters to come to the Mand for meetings during the local festival for Baba Dargahi Shah. This festival was attended by people of all faiths and the Singhs too gathered during this time to make plans. The Mand was a marshy, forested area that the police could not access, so the CRPF and Punjab Police were deployed in the thousands to surround the area. Ribeiro was certain that Bhai Avtar Singh and his fellow Singhs were in the area and now because of the cordon, could not escape. But still, the problem remained that the security forces could not go in en masse and they were too afraid to go in small groups. The solution chosen was to send in army helicopters to seek and kill the Sikh fighters.

    bki.jpg

CRPF men climbed aboard two helicopters and began to search for Bhai Brahma’s hideout. The helicopters began to hover lower to the ground and below them were hiding Jathedar Durga Singh and his men. The Singhs opened fire on the helicopter with such force and volume that it crashed in flames into the marsh. The pilot and all the CRPF men were killed on impact. The Singhs shouted jaikaray and trained their sights on the next helicopter. The pilot had seen what had happened to his companion and decided his mission was impossible. After trying to avoid fire for a short while, he decided to go back to base. Of all the forces surrounding the area, no one had the courage to enter and attempt to rescue the men who had gone down with the helicopter.

As night fell, the Singhs, who were familiar with the area, made their escape. The CRPF and Punjab Police had been completely frustrated and to avoid embarrassment, arrested some farmers who lived around the Mand and claimed Brahma’s men had been captured. The next day’s newspapers carried a statement from the CRPF that one of their helicopters had collided with a tall tree and crashed, resulting in the death of the pilot and the men aboard.

Years later, Ribeiro in his autobiography, “Bullet for Bullet” (1998) wrote, “KPS Gill had been inducted as IG, CRPF, in charge of Punjab operations. He was an excellent operations man and it was he who conceived and planned the Mand operation. We faced some criticism from the press since not a single terrorist was caught in the operation” (pg. 283).

The police were completely frustrated by Bhai Avtar Singh. They began to take their frustration out on the entire village of Brahmpura. Bhai Avtar Singh’s brothers were special targets of the police but no one was spared. An entire platoon of the CRPF was placed in the village school to terrorise the area.

    File00033.jpg

When Bhai Brahma heard about the police excesses, he decided to do something about it. On December 27, 1986 Bhai Brahma and his fellow Singhs entered Brahmpura around midnight. He went to the Gurdwara and after offering his respects, turned on the roof speaker. Bhai Avtar Singh took the microphone and announced, “Residents of Brahmpura, I am your Avtar Singh speaking. I know that the CRPF is harassing you because of me and asking you to tell them my whereabouts. I challenge the CRPF: if you have the courage, come and get Avtar Singh Brahma. There’s no bravery in bothering the innocent villagers here. Let’s have a contest of bravery today and satisfy ourselves. You have weapons and so do we. Let’s have a real encounter tonight and in the morning you can count how many of your men the Singhs have mowed down. Come on CRPF-valio! You are proud of the strength of Delhi and it’s army and we are proud of our Guru. We are Guru Gobind Singh’s sons and we can fight 125 000 alone.”

Bhai Avtar Singh had been heard through the entire vilalge. He waited a while and seeing no response, began again, “CRPF-valio! Come out of your quarters! Brahma, a Sikh of the Guru is waiting for you. The Brahma you couldn’t find in the Mand is now waiting for you! I don’t believe in spilling the blood of innocents and I don’t attack those without weapons. I’m here to meet you now. CRPF-valio, you can meet me any way and any time. Give up your bothering of innocents and come in front of Brahma and satisfy your desire to prove your bravery! Bolay So Nihaal! Sat Sree Akaal!!! Vaahiguru Jee Ka Khalsa Vaahiguru Jee Kee Fateh!”

For a full 25 minutes Bhai Avtar Singh challenged the CRPF on the speaker and waited for over an hour for them to come out. Not a single person came. The Singhs, seeing that no one was brave enough to face them, left the village while bellowing jaikaraas.

Even after the Singhs had left, the terrified CRPF platoon cowered in their base. When they were sure that Brahma had left, they came out. They had been shamed in front of the entire village. The CRPF went berserk and decided to take revenge on the Sikh villagers. Families were dragged out of their houses and the women were raped. One woman had her ear bitten off by a crazed CRPF officer.

Five women were brought together and their clothes were ripped off. One younger girl ran naked to save herself and spent the rest of the cold December night hiding in the bushes.

The CRPF raided Brahmpura's Gurdwara Sahib and began to shoot at a saroop of Sree Guru Granth Sahib. Once that saroop had been riddled with bullets, another Saroop was taken out of the Gurdwara Sahib and lit on fire.

The entire Sikh population of Punjab was horrified and shocked and news of this night of terror even became international. It was demanded that action be taken against the guilty CRPF. Even Ribeiro admitted that what had happened was disgusting and publicly apologized but in his autobiography, he writes, “KPS Gill was then IG of the CRPF. He was not willing to take any action against his men. He approached the home ministry in Delhi to ensure that sanction was not accorded for criminal prosecution. Finally, the Government of India did not sanction the prosecution.” The guilty CRPF battalion was removed and replaced with another. This was the greatness of Indian justice. KP Gill was later appointed DGP of Punjab Police because of his ruthless mentality.

    Renewed Efforts

Bhai Avtar Singh and his fellow Singhs decided to give the Brahmpura incident a suitable reply. CRPF bases were attacked with rockets and blown apart. Bhai Brahma and Jathedar Durga Singh continued to take on all the invading forces and every week news would come of a new guerrilla attack and whole companies being destroyed. The people were all crazy about Brahma and gave him their complete support.

    The Final Battle

    avtar_dead.jpg

Bhai Brahma, when leaving the training camp for the final time had told some Singhs near to him that he would not return. He knew that his shahidi was fast approaching. That day finally arrived on July 22, 1988.

Bhai Avtar Singh and his fellow Singhs, Bhai Surinder Singh and Bhai Jarnail Singh DC were in Rajasthan near the Pakistan border. They had decided to cross and were staying with a Nihang Singh of the Sursingh Jatha. The Singhs approached the border and as they were about to cross, were spotted by the Border Security Force. The Singhs were surrounded but fought their way out. Again, on a tip, the BSF surrounded them a little distance away and once again the Singhs escaped.

Bhai Avtar Singh and his fellow Singhs were still on the move when they were surrounded a third time. Bhai Brahma knew that their ammunition was close to exhausted and he ordered the Singhs that they should escape but in no case should the fall into the hands of the BSF. Bhai Avtar Singh took a position in a green field and held the BSF back as the Singhs broke the cordon. Bhai Jarnail Singh and Bhai Surinder Singh were successful and managed to escape.

    AvtarSinghBrahma0.jpg

The BSF now focused on the field and showered it with bullets. Bhai Brahma was struck in the stomach but despite the pain, continued to battle. The BSF did not have the courage to approach the lone tiger and even in his wounded state, Bhai Brahma was proving deadly. Finally the shooting stopped and the BSF approached the body. As they did to every shahid Singh, they ripped Bhai Brahma's dastaar from his head and stripped off his clothes and took his body to the police station. They were so terrified of the Legend of Brahma, that they could not be assured that this was really him. Photographs of the body were sent to Punjab but no one could confirm the idenity. The Singhs too did not confirm that their General had been martyred. Newspapers debated whether Bhai Brahma was alive or dead and the security forces too could not believe that Brahma had fallen. Only when Bhai Bhupinder Singh Canadian was arrested and he identified the body from pictures did the police finally know for sure that they had got their man. Bhai Bhupinder Singh was also later killed in a fake encounter.

    Aftermath

An Akhand Paath Sahib in the memory of Bhai Avtar Singh was held in village Brahmpura. Baba Daya Singh, Jathedar of Baba Bidhi Chand Dal hoisted a nishaan sahib in his memory. The Jathebandi appointed Bhai Gurdeep Singh Vakeel as the next Jathedar of the KLF.

Bhai Avtar Singh had left behind a strong and principled Jatha of Singhs who continued to be a nightmare for the Indian government.

Bhai Avtar Singh Brahma was a legend in the Punjab and during his lifetime, whole areas of the Punjab had become sovereign. Bhai Sahib’s firm Gurmat principles won the hearts of the people and struck terror into the hearts of the Hindustani forces.

As time passed, such Singhs became more and more rare and the movement slowed down and finally stopped. May Guru Sahib send us another Brahma in today’s desperate times.

Bhai Sahib’s father Giani Harbhajan Singh jee is one of the best Singhs alive today. He is from times of Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee and this family is one of the few families that I have seen in India that is tyaar bar tyaar Khalsa. The whole family from little kids to Giani Harbhajan Singh jee follows Tatt Gurmat Maryada and is in chardi kala.

Giani jee narrated the short life of his son Shaheed Bhai Ravinder Singh jee in such a manner that everyone sitting there shed countless tears. Tears were so overwhelming that at one time I was wondering if something had gone wrong with my eyes. These tears were not of sorrow but of bairaag. Giani jee himself was not shedding tears but it seemed that his heart was shedding tears of blood. This is why he caused all of us to shed tears. Oh! What a great moment that was. So proud was he of his earthly son and so proud were we of our elder brother the son of Guru Gobind Singh jee our father. Giani jee himself endured torture at the hands of Punjab Police for 3 months and several times the whole family was taken to police station.

Shaheed Bhai Ravinder Singh jee knew the whole high command of Babbar Khalsa and if he had opened his mouth and had broken down during torture, the whole of Babbar Khalsa would have been eradicated but Dhan was his life. He stayed in chardi kala and endured the worse tortures of Punjab Police and stayed calm. He was tortured to the level of Bhai Sahib Anokh Singh jee Babbar and endured all tortures just like Bhai Sahib Anokh Singh jee did.

    Daas,

    English Translation :

    BILAAVAL, FIFTH MEHL:

What am I? Just a poor living being. I cannot even describe one of Your hairs, O Lord. Even Brahma, Shiva, the Siddhas and the silent sages do not know Your State, O Infinite Lord and Master. || 1 || What can I say? I cannot say anything. Wherever I look, I see the Lord pervading. || 1 || Pause || And there, where the most terrible tortures are heard to be inflicted by the Messenger of Death, You are my only help and support, O my God. I have sought His Sanctuary, and grasped hold of the Lords Lotus Feet; God has helped Guru Nanak to understand this understanding. || 2 || 5 || 91 ||
