  5. The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has some competition after all. Amritsar's Rajasansi airport has taken off literally on a new high with dozens of international flights landing and flying out - mostly booked to capacity. Figure this. With over 80 departures during peak time a week, the airport here has come of its own, especially after 2005. Out of the over dozen airlines that operate from here, eight have international flights. Even during lean season (May-August), the departures never fall below 60 per week. The total number of passengers handled by the airport here nearly touched 600,000 in 2006-07. Of these, 488,310 were international passengers while only 107,918 passengers were domestic ones. Thanks to Punjab's ever-increasing population of NRIs and also the attraction of coming to the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh shrines, Amritsar has emerged as a destination in its own might. 'Amritsar is the new destination for international travellers. With so many NRIs around and people wanting to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, this airport is bound to grow. People who were till now forced to go to Delhi for international flights can now easily board from here,' pointed out Amritsar-based builder Harvinder Pal Singh. Compared to the number of passengers it was catering to just a decade ago - 22,190 in 1997-98 - Amritsar's flight plan took off in 2002-03 with over 178,000 passengers that year. In 2006-07, the passenger growth touched 596,228. In just four years, the passenger growth is nearly three and a half times. Aircraft movement, which was 1,864 in 2002-03, touched 5,754 in 2006-07. The growth potential of this airport can be seen from the interest of various airlines to operate from here. Singapore Airlines has been operating from here for over one year. Malaysia's successful budget airline - Air Asia - is planning to start its first flights out of India from Amritsar in October. Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan Airlines are already operating from here. Airport Director Arun Talwar is upbeat not only about the growth of passengers and flights from here but also the expansion plans for the airport. 'It is the fastest growing airport in the country. With cargo operations starting Aug 1, the airport will see even more fights. Last year, Amritsar beat Goa and Ahmedabad in terms of international passenger growth,' Talwar told IANS. Amritsar recorded 488,310 international passengers compared to nearly 400,000 at both Goa and Ahmedabad - both airports known to attract tourists and business visitors. The airport's terminal building is being renovated and expanded from its earlier covered area of 14,500 square metres to over 41,000 square metres. The building, which now has a passenger handling capacity of 500, will be able to handle 1,200 passengers by March 2008. The runway at the airport is being extended from its present length of 10,790 feet to 12,000 feet. The airport will have nine parking bays within a couple of months compared to the present three. The Punjab government is providing 44 acres of land to facilitate the expansion plans. 'The growth of this airport has been such in recent years that projected figures for future plans have already been surpassed. The new plans are in line with future requirements till 2015,' Talwar said. Even though it is tucked in the northwest corner of the state, Amritsar is only two-three hours away from industrial hubs Ludhiana and Jalandhar. New Delhi in comparison is 8-10 hours away. 'It is so convenient to take flights from here instead of going to Delhi. If only more airlines start their flights from here to Britain, US and Canada, Amritsar will soon be in the big league of airports,' says Rajdeep Abroal of Ludhiana. http://www.newdelhinews.net/story/270853

  9. This week, Punjab witnessed how the justice dispensing system works in real life. Not one right thinking person in India, no matter to which religion he belongs, will ever deny that the Beant Singh-KPS Gill regime was a regime of gross human rights violations and the government was the most undemocratically elected in the history of Punjab. Only six percent of the people of Punjab had voted for a Congress government and Beant Singh was the handpicked choice of the Indian establishment, as was KPS Gill. When Beant Singh was killed in 1995, the action was actually a reaction. Few tears were shed for the man, and such was the real nature of the r e l a t i o n s h i p between two human rights violators that even KPS Gill as the Director General of Police did not order a separate inquiry. Not one policeman was acted against, not one officer shifted or transferred and no demands for a judicial probe made. The Indian establishment was least interested in finding out how the most protected chief minister's security was breached. But all it needed to do that was a resolve that the man whose prime business has become to kill innocent Sikh youth needs to meet justice. Beant Singh was ripped apart on August 31, 1995. His Man Friday KPS Gill was later convicted of crimes which are loathe for any human soul — pinching women's bottoms in public. What lesser men could the Indian establishment find to annihilate the Sikhs? But while this was a political murder, and the defence counsel of the convicted made it clear in the CBI court that the murder of Beant Singh was 'divine justice', that his regime was worse than the Mughal rule, and that those who committed the murder were avenging the dishonor of an entire community. Kudos to Balwant Singh and Jagtar Singh Hawara who have refused to even appeal against the death sentence. Pratibha Patil's dossier will have no more applications from the Sikhs and the one from Prof Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar will be enough to embarrass the Indian regime, if it knows how to be embarrassed at all. But then, the same justice dispensing system is being exposed day after day in the case of Dera Sacha Sauda where it takes the CBI years and a directive from the High Court to submit its charge sheet clearly stating that Gurmeet Ram Rahim was a rapist and a murderer. The fact that the CBI has not asked for his arrest, and the kidglove treatment extended by the Punjab Police cops in the theatrical arrest and release of the dera head in Sirsa a day earlier shows that the Indian establishment is hell bent on protecting its agents who are ready to penetrate into Sikh faith and forever conspire to weaken the religion. In times like these, it is all the more important that the Sikh community realizes the forces that are working to safeguard the interests of the community and those who are stabbing it in the back. It is also time that the organizations like the SGPC and the great institution of the Akal Takht and the Sikh clergy guide the Sikh quom by acting not in the interests of the political masters whose one point aim is to rule and mint wealth rather than uphold the community's interests in the face of the combined might of the Hindutva forces and the anti-Sikh lobby.

  12. Chandbaja (Punjab), July 30: Residents of Chandbaja Village in Punjab's Faridkot District are intrigued over the increase in cases of cancer during the last one year. The village has witnessed the death of at least 11 people due to cancer in one year and twelve others are critically ill. The non-availability of adequate cancer treatment facilities in Malwa region have forced these Punjab villagers to go to Bikaner in Rajasthan for treatment. This has placed a heavy financial burden on the villagers. Gurpreet, one of the villagers, said: "In the last one year at least 8 to 10 patients have died in this village due to cancer. However, no one cares. We request the government and social organisations to come forward and help the cancer patients" As till date no government medical team had ever visited the village, the reason and details about the cancer remains unknown. The health officials of the Faridkot District have assured all possible help as soon as possible after a proper investigation into the prevailing medical problem in the area. Rakesh Gupta, the civil surgeon in Faridkot, said: "Soon, I am going to visit the village with a team. We will see what kind of cancer is prevailing among the patients and how it can be cured." ccording to an assessment, intensive farming practices in vogue for the past four decades have led to an environmental crisis, which is perhaps the likely cause. in Punjab. The cultivable land is sick, the environment has been heavily contaminated due to the use of chemical pesticides. Besides, the underground water table is plummeting at a disastrous pace.
