  1. HCSO to announce continued efforts to bolster cultural diversity Author: Fabian Gutierrez, Assignment Desk Editor Published On: Feb 02 2015 07:17:11 PM CST HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - The Harris County Sheriff's Department will soon announce its continued efforts to bolster cultural diversity. Patrol Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal will soon be the first deputy to serve with Sikh articles of faith, including turban and beard while on the job. According to Harris County, Dhaliwal, is a six-year deputy and will be allowed into work wearing a dastaar and beard while in Harris County Deputy's uniform. This is part of Sheriff Adrian Garcia's religious accommodation policy to promote understanding, respect and to communicate with all segments of the population in Harris County. "We'll soon be turning a new chapter in the history of the Harris County Sheriff's Office," Garcia said. "One of our very own HCSO family members will be adding a new dimension to his uniform. He'll be allowed to wear his turban. By making these religious accommodations, we are joining the U.S. military and other law enforcement agencies across the country with observant Sikh Americans among their ranks. Harris County is no different. We are one of the most culturally rich and diverse communities in America." A formal announcement is expected later this week.
