  4. Why should there be ignorance amongst locals ? Gurdwara committee should organise Open Days & invite non-Sikhs. Annual Parade & free food distribution go a long way in promoting Religion. Turban Day too is a friendly way to create awareness. Free Health Check Camps & Sport Competitions can develop harmonious relations with local community. In nutshell stop being KAMINAS give back to community at large !

Bhein ji don't get your hopes up, this won't happen in England Gurdwaras.First Committee's don't care & secondly Sikh vote bank politics, Gora's aren't stupid :-) Frankly how many of the locals have Langar on daily basis ? Mostly Fauji's & overseas students are regulars. They have good meal & sometimes delicacy's courtesy of Sangat. Honestly they deserve it as they do Hathi Seva in Gurdwara. [sumptuous food provides good nutrition. In India Kar Seva people prepare their own food coz Gurdwara Langar lacks good nutrition.]

  9. Lack of site for Sikh free school does not deter parents More than 100 parents took the first chance to publicly hear plans for Atam Academy - east Londons first Sikh-designated free school - this week. Four governors gave parents an insight into the unique ethos of the school and how the curriculum will be delivered at Redbridge Central Library, in Clements Road, Ilford. However the Atam Academy governors board is yet to announce a site for where school will be built. But Mankamal Singh, the chairman of governors, said he hopes to confirm one by January 2015. He added: We have identified a number of sites, some of them are Redbridge Council-owned and some are private. Things have progressed but I am not able to say to what extent because the Department for Education (DfE) are in commercial negotiations at this point. Until it is all finalised we are not going to say. At Mondays open day parents were given the school prospectus and had a chance to register their children for the academic year starting September 2015. The school is aiming to initially open reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 7. Father of one Jas Singh, of Seven Kings, said: The school is going to focus on core Sikh British values with a very high standard of education which follows the national curriculum. There is a shortage of schools in Redbridge. Atam Academy is going to be a faith school but it will be open for anyone. Jas hopes to send his daughter to the school next year. It is ideal for me, he added. The board has a very strong pedigree - Raminder Singh Vig, the schools education lead, has been working within education for 20 or 30 years. He explained that the school is going to focus our children and monitor their progress. They look at education as a whole. Mankamal said the school was looking into booking larger venues for the series of open days at the library to cope with the demand from prospective parents. He said: The support and excitement from Redbridge parents is extremely uplifting http://www.ilfordrecorder.co.uk/news/news/lack_of_site_for_sikh_free_school_does_not_deter_parents_1_3823635
  10. NYC Marathon: Sikh Group Fights Racism With Running NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) His turban and long beard have made Simran Jeet Singh the target of racism on his daily runs. Typically, sort of Islamophobic comments, the Columbia University doctoral student told WCBS 880s Marla Diamond. You know, people will call me Osama or call me a terrorist. As a result, Singh helped form Surat Fauj, a running club for Sikhs, in part, to help normalize and humanize people who look like us, he said. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/10/28/nyc-marathon-sikh-group-fights-racism-with-running/

  14. Europe Gurdwaras May be Affected by Change in Allergen Regulations 2014-10-24- thinkallergyBIRMINGHAM, UK (October 28, 2014)Sikh Council UK have alerted the Sangat of an important piece of European legislation called the Food Information for Consumers Regulation (EU FIC). As of 13th December 2014, the regulation will change the way allergen information appears on labels and on food that is pre‑packed, sold loose or served when you are eating out. At the moment it is unclear as to how exactly it would apply to langar but it certainly applies to food bought loose that is served in Gurdwaras and at events such as weddings. Given that some people suffer from food allergies or food intolerance or may have diet related conditions, it is vitally important to be aware of the 14 allergens that need to be declared and made publicly available if they are present in the langar. One way of managing this may be to standardise the menus and to strictly control cross contamination. Furthermore, we also need to make the Sangat aware of the requirements when buying loose cooked food for events. http://www.sikh24.com/2014/10/28/europe-gurdwaras-may-be-affected-by-change-in-allergen-regulations/
  15. A dream come true - thats how the opening of Leicesters first Sikh free school has been described. Falcons Primary, in Gipsy Lane, opened this morning, following a delay of several weeks. The school was supposed to open in September for the beginning of the academic year but had its funding withdrawn from the Department for Education (DfE) at the last minute following a breakdown in relationships. The move prompted angry calls from parents to have it reinstated. Inderjit Singh Panesar, chair of trustees behind the new school said: The opening is a dream come true for parents and the local community. Our aim is to provide the highest quality education supported by universal values and virtues which are underpinned by our Sikh faith ethos. Mr Panesar thanked Leicester East MP Keith Vaz and Councillor Vi Dempster, assistant city mayor for schools, for their support over the past few weeks, along with the DfE. The school has opened to reception and year one children and over time will grow to 420 pupils on roll. It has opened under the Governments free schools programme and will provide education for children from all backgrounds with at least 50 per cent of places available for non-Sikh children. Head teacher, Jasbir Mann added: Its such a privilege to be here and thoroughly exciting. The building is Grade II listed and has some fantastic historical features but has been completely renovated inside and is peaceful and calm. The children look lovely in their crisp new uniforms and are busy settling in. Over the next few weeks well be implementing the new curriculum as well as introducing after school activities. There is so much to look forward to. The DfE agreed to allow the school to open, provided the trustees, who make up the Akaal Education Trust, could meet a number of strict conditions, including restructuring the board of trustees and governing body to include more people from the primary education sector and finding a new principal. Trustees were also asked to provide a secure financial plan and budget for future sustainability. Leicester East MP Keith Vaz lobbied the DfE following the funding withdrawal and was instrumental in paving the way for it to finally open. He said: This is the day that we thought would never happen. The devastation of the news that the funding was to be withdrawn has been replaced by euphoria. At last the school has opened. This is a tribute to all parties - the government, trustees and the council, who worked together to ensure that the needs of the children should be the first and paramount consideration. It would have been wrong to open a school that did not have firm foundations and I know that it will work hard to become one of the best schools in the city.
