    Waheguroo jee ke Fateh

My brother is doing a project on 1984 for school and he needs material on the 1984 attacks. Thanks it would be greatly appreciated. :TH:

  2. although i agree that it is weird to have two nagar kirtans on the same day, the point of this topic was to gat people to write letters to the mayor addressing the issue of not being granted a permit...i know that a lot of people feel strongly about the two nagar kirtan issue and it could get way off topic...and remember that there is more than one nagar kirtan held in malton....dont forget the nagar kirtan for the parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji that took place last september...so if this pattern of not granting permits continues that nagar kirtan could be in jeporday also...so write those emails!

I just attented the Nagar Kirtan that took place in Malton. It was brought to my attention that we did not receive permission from the city if Mississauga to hold this Nagar Kirtan, even after the case was taken to court. Therefore we were held to walking on the sidewalks for some parts of the Nagar Kirtan. This did not allow us to have floats of any sort and was very restricting. The Mayor of Mississauga is a royal *** and has a thing against the Sikh community. this is evident in the racist and anti immigration remarks she has made in the past. Anyway the point of this is that i was hoping that the sangat would each write off a quick email to the mayor and let her know that we find this unacceptable. A vast majority of the community is made up of Sikhs. So if other communities are allowed to hold parades i.e. the santa claus parade etc. why should the Sikh community be restricted?? grin.gif It's not as if we leave a huge mess or are unruly...so please write an email to the mayor and let her know how we feel. Her email is mayor@mississauga.ca

As for the practicality of Shaster Vidya/Gatka, most of the real teachers no longer exist, and these days, gatka is primarily done as a "show" at local nagar kirtans. For example, the following training methods no longer exist at most akharas around the world:

    - Hand to hand combat

    - Grappling/Wrestling (main training method used by Singhs to keep in shape)

    - Knife Combat

    - Astar Vidya (Science of throwing of weapons

Gatka is actually a real fighting technique. It is not just waving around a stick, you actually have to think about what would happen in real life and how to react properly. Actually there are akharas that teach a lot of the things listed above. A new training gatka academy is going to open up five mins from dixie Gurdwara and they are going to teach a lot of the things that are listed above. If you would like to learn more go to gatka.ca, the website is not up yet but is coming soon.

I have been to Sucha Sauda before i know that before you enter you have to take off your shoes. And to answer your question SOGGS they do acutally have a sink right when you enter where you are supposed to wash your hands, i hope people do see the sink and wash their hands because they will probably be touching tapes, gutkas etc.
