  3. The Beauty Of Sikhism (part 3 )

    This is part 3 of a continuing series about the beauty of SIKHISM that has been inspiring me even after my lifelong comparative research on religion .In my life ,apart from sikhi home ground of cos ,I studied theology in a christian bible colege,Islam under a muslim scholar ,Hinduism in my 1st degree course ,and the hare krishna movement under one of their top scholars associated with swami prabhupada ,i.e a scholar in sanskrit too –all through Gurjee's kirpa ,apart from all the other pains ,sufferings ,blessings and joys of life I have gone through .Here I stand through Maharaj kirpa ,feeling 16 and revitalised again as Sikhi blows my mind and Amrit drips ,drips ,drips into my soul to flood it and make me wet with God's love juice .

    The universality of Sikhism made the famous early English(irish) researcher into Sikhism of the 19th century ,i.e Macauliffe remark ,that had Sikhism been the religion of the english race ,it would have spread to the entire world to all races .This was because of 3 very specific things he noted about Sikhism .The first its universality ,the second about how Sikhism focuses on the realisation of the full potential of the human psyche and the third its central doctrines .

    Right from the start Sikhism was never about one race ,one language or religion .Guru Nanak's arrows of exposing religous hypocrisy were aimed at hindus ,yogis ,buddhists ,muslims even though a community of early followers totally devoted to Gurujee called Nanak-panthis ,were beginning to gather in his presence .Our ten Gurus were not boring irrelevant saints living within the confines of the vast Moghul empire .They were so mighty and powerful in word ,action and deed and deemed such an important national socio-political-religous threat , that the moghul emperors went to the extent of executing /martyring two Gurus ,i.e Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Tegh Bahadur whilst constantly having issues with the rest ,even to the extent of pursuing and attacking Guru Gobind Singh .Ultimately ,the powerful force of Sikhism wrenched control of most of India out of Moghul hands .Sikhism was never meant to be a punjabee thing .

    In fact ,Sikhism is the only faith in the world that considers unconditionally , all human beings as one family of God in the famous verse ''ek pita ,ekas keh hum barak ''. No true christian ever calls a non- christian a brother ,neither a muslim .Infact ,in a parable of jesus ,he even refused to heal a woman because she was a non jew .Later ,a big debate erupted between two of jesus's main disciples paul and peter,as to whether christianity was meant for non jews .In christianity you cannot call a man, not going to heaven( because he is a non christian) as a brother .Similarly ,in Islam ,rightaway in the second chapter of the Quran titled ''surah –al-baqarah ,the opening verses divide mankind into 3 categories i.e mukmin -believers ,kaffir -non believers ,and hypocrtites /waverers .Hence there exists an 'us' and 'them' mentality permeating through Islam .Dont either expect a brahmin hindu to even consider a Sudra hindu as a brother, because, according to hindu mythology both were the produce of different bodily fluids of the gods . However a sikh can hug any human being on earth and call that person either brother ,sister ,daughter or mother .

    Likewise , the Sikh prayer at a gurudwara ends with ''tere bhaneh sarbat da bhela'' i.e O God ,may your grace be to the benefit of all beings .Read up any commentary on the main christian prayer in church starting with ''our father who art in heaven ... '' and you will soon realise its a prayer meant for christians ,not non christians .Likewise in a mosque ,the prayer that a muslim repeats 17 times a day(spread over 5 times),is the same prayer used in mosques .That prayer is the 1st chapter of the quran i.e sura al -fateha consisting of 7 short lines.Again this is a prayer is meant only for the mukmin /believer/muslim and does not ask God to bless all people .

    The legendary Bhai Gurdas ,poet-saint -scholar who lived during the times of the early Gurus ,reminisces the driving force of Guru Nanak's mission in his 'vars' i.e '' Baba dekheh dhyan dae jelti sabh prithvee des aaee.....charea sodhan dharat lokai'' i.e the world appeared to be as if it was burning (burning in ego ,pain ,grief ,greed..) ,and Guru Nanak set about to retrieve the world of the darkness it had spun itself into .Infact Bhai Gurdas goes to the extent of saying Guru Nanak was sent to save the entire world –''kal taren Gur Nanak aea'' .

    In Ganj -nama , Bhai Nand Lal who lived during the times of Guru Gobind Singh, writes of Guru Nanak in persian as follows ''man tura aphridem az pae a,ke shevi rehnuma b-jumlaa jahaan '' i.e God tells Guru Nanak ---''I have created you for this purpose .So that you should be the leader to steer the whole world(jahaan) towards the right path''. Guru Gobind Singh in His autobiography in Bachitarr Natak ,reiterates God's directives to him and they are, that Gurujee is to set the human race on the right footing and on the path to God .Neither jesus ,nor mohamad ,krishna ,buddha or ram ever declared that their mandate was for the entire world .It was their followers who concoted doctrines to try to give their religions a universal appeal .

    There is no example in christianity ,islam ,or hinduism where any of their prophets gave their lives to save another religion .But ,in Sikhism ,Gur Tehg Bahadur Himself gave up His life/mortal body to protect Hinduism in Kashmir ,amongst other goals that Gurujee's martydom accomplished .This makes us realise that the universality of Sikhism is a universality based upon true love towards all people and all of creation ,not a universality centering and radiating out from the material success of one big nation as Barack Obama's inauguration speech today implied .

    This is absolutely inspiring that, try to restrict it as we may ,Sikhism is not to be strangled and jeolously guarded and gripped by any one race including punjabees .The excuse we can buy for now ,but not for long ,is that Sikhism was born within the punjab ,and its only very recently that punjabee sikhs have managed to start migrating internationally ,bringing the seeds of sikhi with them ,and learning other languages .Howver ,there is a tendency to migrate to somewhere ,form a community ,complete with its own culture including Sikhism ,and keep it to themselves .And wherever we are ,we are either degenarating into a disunited lot ,or letting the local culture dilute us ,rather than us spread sikhi to that culture .If every sikh were to be a saint soldier ,realising that the real purpose of his migration was to be a pollinating bird or insect for sikhi ,very soon , a prime minister of UK or canada or the president of USA could be an amritdhree sikh.Punjab and punjabbes must not bind and grip Sikhi but release it so it can realise its potential to be the solver of the world's problems with its absolutely universal outlook and outreach !

    See, ladoos, boondi or barfi — even liquor and clocks — are fine as offerings in temples and gurdwaras but what do you do if the tough visa regulations just won't let you fly in a state where going abroad is the ultimate dream?

    Simple: Try the aeroplane, may be a jumbo.

    Delusional, may be, but faith is driving hoardes of people from phoren-smitten Doaba region, tired of waiting for visas post 9/11 and sundry other such incidents such as our own 26/11, to temples with their objects of fancy, toy aeroplanes.

    Backed by a fervent prayer, they hope, it will take them out of the country sooner than the rule-makers think.

    At Gurdwara Sant Baba Nihal Singh Ji Shaheedan in Talhan village, near here, the plane is a winner hands down .

    Ask Harbans Kaur, mother of Laddi of Raipur Phalara village: "My son had been trying hard to go to Canada but, for one reason or the other, he was denied a visa. A friend suggested we offer the replica of an aeroplane at Talhan gurdwara. It worked. My son is now in Canada. There is nothing wrong in what I did."

    Sandeep Kaur of Jalandhar said she got married to an England-based NRI nearly two years ago but has not been able to join him there. "I have also made a similar offering. What are a few hundred rupees if they can assure you a chance of settling abroad?"

    Gurdwara head granthi Manjeet Singh says, for over a year now, every week brings at least 40 toy planes to them. The number is higher on weekdays and Sundays. They have a room full of winged beauties.

    Shops outside the gurdwara are making a killing: each plane is between Rs 150 and Rs 500. The run of the planes has left the all-time favourite symbol of Sikh identity, the "kara", far behind. It is less visible too.

    Blind faith, after all...

    This is horrible and very un Sikhi. Offering toy airplanes so God will make the person going through the stack of immagration papers in the USA find yours any quicker!

    And THEN making a BUSINESS OUT OF IT! :o

  13. Any Chardikela Sikhs Who Can Visit ''blissful Sikh'' In Canada

    (this is a long post ,please bear with me and read it all ,your help is needed )

    GURU PYEAREO) ,

    In the last few days ,i have been talking to Blissful Sikh,which is the internet name of a guy of that name on this forum.You can read the background to this ,on another long post on this website called ''have 3ho lost the plot''which is on this main topics page .

    Basically ,he is a 19 year white guy in Victoria BC(Esquimalt area of that city) which is on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island .At 16 ,he was an athiest and got involved with heroin .Now he is in recovery with the medical help of a gradual reduction methadone substitute programme designed and administered by his doctors .This recovery is designed to be complete within a few months .

    During this time of recovery ,he was looking for answers to life and stumbled upon Sikhism(through Guru's grace) all on his own on the internet .He was so fascinated because beginning with the Mul Mantr ,Sikhism provided him with all the answers he was looking for .

    As he is virtally bedridden and very weak and cared for by his parents ,he spents most of his time either in bed or on the internet on his chair .He spends all his time on the internet reading up everything he can about Sikhism and has began to have sikh friends on msn too.

    He recently in innnocence (and due to his own experiences)made a video on youtube extolling the virtues of cannabis/hemp ,whilst mentioning Waheguru and that his religion(which he has adapted) is Sikhism(he uses a little cannabis as part of his recovery to aid his appetite, etc )This was found to be very offensive of course by many of us ,and a long thread started on this forum as i have mentioned earlier where there have ben a lot of exchanges between him and a few of us giving him advice .He is beginning to understand that there is no place for drugs in Sikhi ,and in fact wants to complete his recovery ,visit Harmandir Sahib ,and take Amrit and be a baptised sikh .

    I have had the chance to have a few conversations with him on msn in the last few days .He has now adopted JASKIRAT SINGH as his name from his white name of patrick ,till the panj piareh direct him further .I have amazingly discovered that through online videos he has on his own, found out ,and learnt how to tie a dastaar ,and started doing simran .His level of passion for sikhi is just so amazing and exciting .

    Now he needs GURU GOBIND SINGH'S FAUJ'S HELP . He needs people to send him gutkas to start doing nitnem in punjabi .He needs ppl to send him a load of books on sikhi .He needs a load of chardikela sikh friends ,both online and in person .

    Most of all ,he needs Gurmukhs to start visiting him in his home ,to catch his hand lovingly and do Sukhmani Sahib with him ,simran with him ,to teach him punjabee and gurmukhi and do nitnem with him .He needs 5 ABSOLUTELY CHARDIKELA GURU KE LAL , AMRITDHARI REHATVAAN SINGHS to go to his house and do a powerful ardas with him so that deep in his heart something magical happens to relieve him even of the need for methadone and cannabis support for his recovery .He needs Gurmukhs who can take him out and look after him during keertan samagams and rehnsbhais .Infact i would say that a special keertan programme ought to be organised with him in attendance specially for him and his health .

    I am sure you can think of countless other possibilities of helping him .He needs the constant daily sangat of GURMUKHS . He needs every help possible out there .Please pm him directly on this website to get in touch with you .Please offer every help .He is begging for your love .I am putting up this post after talking to him with his permission because he needs the sangat's support .He is not asking for money ,he is begging only for Sikhi and he is only 19 and white .Wherever you are in the world ,do whatever you can to help him .

    I live in UK but if no one is going to help him ,im going to buy a ticket and go spend a few weeks with him to help him out . But i trust there are great gurmukh pyare souls in canada reading this no matter if you are akj,ddt ,dodra wotever jetha you belong to ,so please start getting into telephone and other means of contact with him immediately .Pm him directly as '' Blissful Sikh '' on this forum to make contact .He may be a little shy and awed to be offered loving support and visits but please insist and do visit him ,post him stuff ,etc etc . I have indicated in the beginning of this post that he lives in Victoria BC(Esquimalt area of that city) which is on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island .

    May Gurujee inspire you to help patrick(Jaskirat Singh)

    And I noticed here that he also had anti-caucasian messages.

  20. The Beauty Of Sikhism (part 1 )

    In the past week ,something has been busying my mind ,as i been going through a personal

    project i started a few years ago of reading the entire SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB JEE , starting from page 1 ,by going through very very slowly line by line and the meanings of individual words within a line too ,with the help of manmohan singh's translations ,other teekas and dictionaries ,etc .These are some beautiful thoughts that have been springing up my mind through Gurujee's grace and spirit within .they are as follows :

    In the recent past 18-20 years ,i have witnessed the panth getting involved in a lot of infighting between jethas concerning do's and dont's ,everyone convinced they are right .And there are disagreements between jethadars of the tahkts ,between liberal,moderate and conservative sikhs ,between the different scholars ,between the different sikh political parties ,between sikh youths on internet forums ,between different sikh radio stations .The list goes on .And meantime the old guard maintains a tight grip and monoply over all sorts of sikh institutions around the world ,Harmandir Sahib and SGPC included ,refusing to adapt to challenging ,fast changing times .The situation seems to only get worse with everyone only getting more firmly entrenched in their own parochial and die-hard ,unbending ,intolerant views of whatever they have chosen to lay stake on ,and believe in .This can be very very upsetting ,demotivating ,puts people off and confuses especially new comers to the sikh faith who read one thing but in action ,see another thing .What they can end up seeing is a community caught up in strife ,disunited to the core and unable to present itself and sikhi to the world as anything but relevant ,progressive ,contemporary and united.

    While the best solutions to this mess ,and the resolve ,means and actions to solve them may be reserved for the coming generations of inspired ,blessed Sikhs from all races(as Sikhi is slowly spreading to other races),i however have been pondering over how very very beautiful sikhism/sikhi really is .These thoughts make me hunger and thirst for Sikhism with the passion ,impulse ,craving ,hormonal drive ,and excitement of a teenager bursting with life .

    At the heart of Sikhi ,as Guru Ramdas says in raag suhi ,pg 735, is the solution to the world's core problem , i.e ''haumai rog sabh jagat biapea ,tinh kau janam janam dukh bharee''(the whole world is engrossed in the disease of ego/self -conceit/me me me /i-am-ness....).

    Actually ,if you look anywhere you see that i-am-ness /me/mine/ -outward life generated by the inner little i ,is the cause of all selfishness ,cheating ,pain ,conflict ,suffering ,poverty ,because the little i within we listen to, makes us selfish ,focussing on self interest whether it is a person ,party ,race ,religion ,or region .That makes us act out of fear of losing our self interest .Its the cause why majority populations in countries like india ,malaysia ,etc etc bully their minority populations .

    Amazingly enough, Sikhi is the only one teaching /faith /religion in the world that pinpoints this problem.This is because all the other religions of the world tend to shy away and have their eyes turned away from this problem ,which is the eye of the storm ,the real wild card causing the world's problems .Christianity is too busy concerned with the sinful genes of Adam running through the blood of the human race.Islam is too wrapped up in the continuing paranoia that everybody and everything in the world ,that isnt muslim is out to destroy Islam and needs to be bombed to extinction. Buddhism was born to check the power of Brahmanism in india and empower the lower classes ,lost this struggle and then reinvented itself as a religion to do with atheism and self believe,and now is reinventing itself again as a superstore selling meditation involving slapping and shutting up the mind ,to confused and unhappy people .Judaism lost the plot a long time ago thinking the jews are God's chosen ,no matter how rebellious they get.Modern day Gurus see all this mess and offer everything from astrology to pseudo scientific teachings stealing ideas from particle/quantum physics and chaos theory to make their business popular .Hahaaa

    Gurujee gives the solution to this core problem of haumai , in the line before the verse i just quoted i.e ''Gurbachni jini japea mera har har ,tinke haumai rog gheh''(Through the word and instruction of THE GURU ,all who focus and meditate upon GOD ,the malady of ego will be dispelled).This verse means more than it seems because what it implies is absolutely mind blowing .This verse is saying that God himself is breaking into the universe and like a lightning flash showing up through our Guru,since the word Guru really means God the Divine Enlightener ,enlightening us through our 10 Gurus and Guru Granth Sahib .Gurbachni means the bachan of Gurujee .Bachan is a beautiful word ,from the word vachan ,originating further in time from the word vach ,and vak ,which means an utterance .-i.e an utterance not based on some mind based opinion but an utterance happening in a flash of enlightenment about truth .Hence gurbachni means the words of absolute sterling eternal truth flashing out like lightning from our Guru's pure God soul .

    Hence this verse is implying -o man wrap yourself tightly with ,or rather surrender yourself to the word and wisdom of Gurujee because it is alive,spontaneous and luminuos .As Guru's magical/supernatural/metaphysical of origin ,words shoot into your being like a ray of lightning ,they will become alive within you ,and spin you into a state where your brains and soul ,consciousness and thoughts will pulsate like a heart beat with the name of God ,i.e Waheguruuuuu ,waheguruuuuuuuuuuu ,waheguruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu as if waheguruuuuuuuuuu is continuosly looping in you and jumping and dancing in you .This will knock off your little ego and ''i'' so that you see not me but the light behind all life all in and around you .

    And that is why we as Sikhs do some pretty cool things that make people everywhere we live love us .Western tourists visit India knowing they can sleep in a sikh temple and receive a vegeterain meal .That is because this constant fight with haumai has resulted in sikhs being big hearted ,kind ,considerate ,compassionate ,sharing and caring wherever we live ,no matter our ideological differences .When a mosque service is over ,muslims are requested to go away as quickly as possible quietly out of the premises .When a church service is over all you ever are offered if you are lucky is a little dry biscuit and little cup of tea .However a sikh gurudwara is a place of beautiful heavenly keertan sung to ambient soulish classical raagas or maybe techno /d and b soul stirring ,fast akj style, keertan with nice waheguru loops ,or 3ho angelic churchy style chants .And a sikh temple is where you get served nice warm sweet buttery prasad on a winter day ,and healthy vegeterian langar /food .

    The beauty of Sikhism also lies in its utter simplicity and straightforward no -<banned word filter activated> approach to life . Instead of too much of mind clutter ,all you are required to do is to focus on 3 simple things even an <banned word filter activated> like me can follow ,i.e naam ,daan ,and ishnan (live in naam ,in sharing and in cleanliness ).I mean it doesnt get any more simpler or logical than that .Imagine a world where everyone lived in naam ,in giving and sharing and in cleanliness .This mind blowing 3 words put communism ,capitalism and every other ism to shame .Its such a simple solution to life and yet puts all other complicated solutions to shame because its the truth originating in SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB ).If you ponder on these 3 words you suddenly realise that -o man! this is it .bingo! this is the cure the world needs .im going preach these 3 words .My Guru has performed a miracle here ! There would be no credit crunch today if the world had been following naam ,dan ishnan .mind blowing solution to economics and politics and world poverty . What more could you ask for but a clean world ,a loving sharing world and a world loving Him who created it and looks after it .

    This is why i luv sikhi to my being because it does not try to impose a religion ,unscientific or intellectually complicated philosophy which requires me to believe a gossip that so and so gave a virgin birth without sex because sex is evil ,or that god has a favourite son which makes mi kinda jeolous and sulk with god , ,or that god's prophet producing factory has been shut down on his orders and that so and so is the final prophet . Neither does Sikhism order me to copycat buddha and to look all serene and sombre like him in boring meditation ,or to sit in confusion as to which should i choose to worship from 1 of the 33 million gods of hinduism ,for fear of the rest sulking with me and denying me sex ,food and income for the rest of my life hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa .

    On the contrary ,Sikhism is like -yes man! go work ,go share ,go do naam ,and you''ll be cool .God and Guru will luv ya and everything will be ace ! Furthermore ,Sikhism says Hey man! you are confused who you should be -no worries ,just be 2 things -sant sipahee .Be saintly in and out ,and be a warrior so no one bullies you both in real and online . A warrior that is a gentle giant ,like a dolphin that looks after others .

    Look at the the kinda person Sikhism makes you .A brave but humble person ,connected to God's immortal power ,kind and considerate ,strong in mind ,body and soul ,intelligent ,well skilled ,not living on benefits , with a taste for music and poetry and proper food ,and clean in body ,clean from drugs and nice to smell hahaaaaaaaa.This is a mind psyche that is unique to sikhs with all this different simple components in 1 person in a simple harmonious way .Sikhism has no place for illiteracy because every sikh is to be educating him/herself on Guru's word which is the word of the highest wisdom and truth that the world needs in its ighnorance .

    As i reflect on these things suddenly i rediscover my inspiration that makes us completely passionate about Sikhism .This is part one of my thoughts . More to follow soon.................

    Basically ,he is a 19 year white guy in Victoria BC(Esquimalt area of that city) which is on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island .At 16 ,he was an athiest and got involved with heroin .Now he is in recovery with the medical help of a gradual reduction methadone substitute programme designed and administered by his doctors .This recovery is designed to be complete within a few months .

    During this time of recovery ,he was looking for answers to life and stumbled upon Sikhism(through Guru's grace) all on his own on the internet .He was so fascinated because beginning with the Mul Mantr ,Sikhism provided him with all the answers he was looking for .

    As he is virtally bedridden and very weak and cared for by his parents ,he spents most of his time either in bed or on the internet on his chair .He spends all his time on the internet reading up everything he can about Sikhism and has began to have sikh friends on msn too.

    He recently in innnocence (and due to his own experiences)made a video on youtube extolling the virtues of cannabis/hemp ,whilst mentioning Waheguru and that his religion(which he has adapted) is Sikhism(he uses a little cannabis as part of his recovery to aid his appetite, etc )This was found to be very offensive of course by many of us ,and a long thread started on this forum as i have mentioned earlier where there have ben a lot of exchanges between him and a few of us giving him advice .He is beginning to understand that there is no place for drugs in Sikhi ,and in fact wants to complete his recovery ,visit Harmandir Sahib ,and take Amrit and be a baptised sikh .

    I have had the chance to have a few conversations with him on msn in the last few days .He has now adopted JASKIRAT SINGH as his name from his white name of patrick ,till the panj piareh direct him further .I have amazingly discovered that through online videos he has on his own, found out ,and learnt how to tie a dastaar ,and started doing simran .His level of passion for sikhi is just so amazing and exciting .

    Now he needs GURU GOBIND SINGH'S FAUJ'S HELP . He needs people to send him gutkas to start doing nitnem in punjabi .He needs ppl to send him a load of books on sikhi .He needs a load of chardikela sikh friends ,both online and in person .

    Most of all ,he needs Gurmukhs to start visiting him in his home ,to catch his hand lovingly and do Sukhmani Sahib with him ,simran with him ,to teach him punjabee and gurmukhi and do nitnem with him .He needs 5 ABSOLUTELY CHARDIKELA GURU KE LAL , AMRITDHARI REHATVAAN SINGHS to go to his house and do a powerful ardas with him so that deep in his heart something magical happens to relieve him even of the need for methadone and cannabis support for his recovery .He needs Gurmukhs who can take him out and look after him during keertan samagams and rehnsbhais .Infact i would say that a special keertan programme ought to be organised with him in attendance specially for him and his health .

    I am sure you can think of countless other possibilities of helping him .He needs the constant daily sangat of GURMUKHS . He needs every help possible out there .Please pm him directly on this website to get in touch with you .Please offer every help .He is begging for your love .I am putting up this post after talking to him with his permission because he needs the sangat's support .He is not asking for money ,he is begging only for Sikhi and he is only 19 and white .Wherever you are in the world ,do whatever you can to help him .

    I live in UK but if no one is going to help him ,im going to buy a ticket and go spend a few weeks with him to help him out . But i trust there are great gurmukh pyare souls in canada reading this no matter if you are akj,ddt ,dodra wotever jetha you belong to ,so please start getting into telephone and other means of contact with him immediately .Pm him directly as '' Blissful Sikh '' on this forum to make contact .He may be a little shy and awed to be offered loving support and visits but please insist and do visit him ,post him stuff ,etc etc . I have indicated in the beginning of this post that he lives in Victoria BC(Esquimalt area of that city) which is on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island .
