  2. "Lest we forget..."

As Saragarhi Day approaches it once again falls upon all Sikhs to remember and proclaim the bravery of the 21 Sikhs who died in the battle.

They sacrificed their lives whilst walking on the path of gallantry which was bestowed upon them through their heritage.

It is due to their deeds and those of countless other Sikh warriors that we today enjoy the praise and glory of our contemporaries in Britain.

What will you be doing to remember them ?

Get involved in the Saragarhi Day Campaign ....

Newcastle born Anglican missionary and contemporary of Gandhi, Rev C.F Andrews, described as the "conscience of the British Raj", witnessed some of the most significant defining moments of India's campaign for independence. This lecture illustrates the life of a remarkable man who recognised and acclaimed the true nature of the Sikhs and their role in that epic struggle.

    The Battle of Saragarhi 1897

Fought in the barren and hostile terrain of the North West frontier on 12th September 1897, the battle of Saragarhi, in which 21 Sikh soldiers valiantly fought and died defending their post against insurmountable odds, is alarmingly neglected in the pages of modern history. In doing so they upheld the very traditions of bravery and sacrifice which have made the Sikh regiment the highest decorated of the Commonwealth.

This illustrated talk will recount the Battle and forms part of ASHT's national campaign 'Saragarhi: Tradition Never Dies' which was launched in September 2010 to highlight this 'hidden' history.

  6. After a successful spring tour around schools and venues in the UK this family theatre production is NOW TOURING until December!

'The Maharajah and the Kohinoor' is a touching tale charting one of the most illustrious episodes in British history. Told through the eyes of the much disputed Kohinoor diamond, the play follows the story of Duleep Singh, Maharajah of Lahore and King of the Sikh Empire, who was deposed at the age of eleven and sent to England. Separated from his mother he arrived on the shores of England and was immediately adopted by Queen Victoria. Encouraged by Her Majesty, Duleep Singh established solid relationships with the Royal family over the years.

However, injustices and insincere intentions eventually drove him into the throws of exploitative meddlers who offered allegiance but left him isolated. He died penniless and alone in a desolate hotel in Paris in 1893.

This year's Heritage Shared will feature the launch of ASHT's nationwide 'Saragarhi Day', aimed at increasing awareness of this brave episode in British military history.

The campaign was recently launched at the Imperial War Museum by former head of the British Army, General Sir Richard Dannatt, His Honour Judge Sir Mota Singh QC and Pops from Tigerstyle.

The campaign aims to encourage participation from organisations and individuals including direct descendents of those who served with the Sikh regiment in that action. The launch will be followed by events at key locations across the country.

"The British, as well as the Indians, are proud of the 36th Sikh Regiment. It is no exaggeration to record that the armies which possess the valiant Sikhs cannot face defeat in war." Queen Victoria

Flying Sikhs provides an intimate portrait of the Sikh pilots who valiantly contributed to British success in both World Wars. The history of the Sikhs who flew in the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force and the Indian Air Force has been forgotten, yet their bravery was recognised widely both within the armed services and the public during the dark days of the Blitz and the Japanese invasion of South East Asia. Included are interviews with the last remaining Sikh pilots from WWII.

Flying Sikhs was written and directed by Navdeep Singh Kandola, an award-winning filmmaker specialising in ecology, ethnicity and Punjabi culture in a career spanning over twenty years.
