  1. Hi, firstly...jus thought I'd let you know I'm a woman!! I think it might have something to do with my login name but loadsa people think I'm a guy! Anyway back to the point - What would be your opinion in either situation? If someone has taken amrit and has all 5 k's but inside is still a bad person and if someone hasn't taken amrit but has the 5k's or doesn't have the 5 k's and is a good person? I've been reading a lot of stuff but I'm having difficulty in finding where the rules are written about the 5k's (besides the Rehat Maryada)...can anyone help me out? Thanks!
  2. I was just wondering is there anyone in Sikhism who people regard to be equivalent to as Catholics see the Pope?
  3. Thanks for pointing that one out - I understand what that means but where is it written about the 5k's?
  4. I am asking for a bit of help from everyone: I have read some of the SGGS and have found nothing related to the 5k's...I understand that there is the Rehat Maryada but where/when were these rules originally written? Where have the original rules come from? I know the story about Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Panj Pyare but where was this story written? Hope someone can help! Thanks
  5. Does anyone know where to get a copy of the proper Janam Sakhi off the internet? Also who wrote it? Was it written while the guru's were alive and did the endorse it as a book that we should read/follow? Thanks!
  6. I have taken the below quote from the SGPC website - I dunno about anyone else but it sounds to me as if the Rehat Maryada was created by the SGPC. "The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee had constituted a sub-committee comprising the undermentioned gentlemen for preparing a draft of code of conduct and conventions to enable it to determine and prescribe a proper set of conventions for gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship): Giani Thakar Singh, Amritsar; Giani Sher Singh; Bhai Budh Singh; Akali Kaur Singh; Sant Sangat Singh of Kamaliya; Bhai Kahn Singh of Nabha; Sant Gulab Singh of Gholiya; Bhai Labh Singh, Granthi, Sri Harmandar Sahib; Bhai Hazura Singh of Hazur Sahib (or a representative of his); Pandit Basant Singh of Patiala; Bhai Vir Singh of Amritsar; Giani Hira Singh Dard; Bawa Harkishan Singh, Principal, Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Gujranwala; Bhai Trilochan Singh of Sur Singh, Distt. Lahore; Giani Hamir Singh of Amritsar; Pandit Kartar Singh of Dakha, Distt. Ludhiana; the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat; the Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, the Jathedar of the Takht Sri Patna Sahib; Prof. Ganga Singh; Prof. Jodh Singh; Sant Man Singh of Kankhal; justice Teja Singh; Bhai Randhir Singh; and Prof. Teja Singh (who was to be the convenor of the sub-committee). The meetings of this sub-committee were held on Oct. 4 and 5, 1931, Jan. 3,1932, and Jan. 31, 1932 at the Akal Takht."
  7. Hi Jasleen, just out of interest can I have the list of contributors that you refer to - I am getting mixed information about where the Rehat Maryada came from and it is confusing!! Also in reference to your previous post about women not being required to wear the dastaar - can you tell me wear it says this in the maryada and also does it give a reason why? To me, this fact backs up my argument about the maryada being sexist and not following the core teachings of Sikhi by not having equal rules for men and women!
  8. what do i think about it? i think that i'm required to follow it to the best of my ability. there is currently only one Panthic rehat maryada, compiled by scholars over 10+ years. and it was written in the first part of the 20th century, so it was a couple hundred years after Guru Gobind Singh ji. however, it took into account all of the historical rehatnamas. i don't see a lot of inequality in it... the fact that women are exempted from wearing dastaars and the fact that a man can marry more than one woman are the only two things that strike me as particularly sexist. there's also a lot about taking care of one's daughter, but that's more indian culture than sexism. can you please point out the offensive points so that we may better address your question? For example it says: - A Sikh's daughter must be married to a Sikh. - When a girl becomes marriageable, physically, emotionally and by virtue of maturity of character, a suitable Sikh match should be found and she be married to him by Anand marriage rites. I find these quotes have nothing to do with religion and if Sikhi is about equality how come there are no such rules for males. Also if these ideas have come from Indian culture, shouldn't culture and our religion be kept separate? After all the book is called the Sikh Code of Conduct not the Indian Code of Conduct? To me equality means that rules apply to both sexes not just one. Imagine if they said there's different rules for different races - that would be racism. Please share your sources for this, Rav, also, Guru Ji still lives. Regards I have read about this in many places a couple of them being "The Sikh Times" and wikipedia (I'm not saying this is a reliable source but it says the same things I have read about in other places)
  9. I was just wondering what people think about the Rehat Maryada? I have been reading about it and have discovered that it was written after the Guru's were around - in fact the first part was written 10 years after Guru Gobind Singh Ji had died. It also contradicts one of the main teachings of Sikhi - the equality of man and woman - one of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's main teachings. Should Sikhs be following this code of conduct which has been written by lesser authority? Who gives anyone the right to write a code of conduct - e.g. could we just get together and make one? Would really appreciate peoples views on this because it has caused confusion for me! Thanks Rav
  10. Hi Guys! I'm making a documentary about Sikhism and I am doing some research into Sikhi and how people view the religion and also I want to put out the questions: Who is a Sikh? What is more important in Sikhism - the 5 k's or the spirituality e.g. if someone has all 5 k's and is a bad person but there is someone who doesn't have the 5 k's but follows all the spiritual side of Sikhi and is a good person which one is right? Cheers!! Rav
