The reason for Sikhs not making to professional or elite-level athletics is mainly culture. We tend to stick to the traditional "safe" and "tried-and-trusted" ways of making a good living. Education is highly valued and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. But, there is such a thing as being to too safe... The main difference between someone who makes it to pros and someone who doesn't boils down to the amount of risk they are willing to take and the ofcourse the amount of support(financial, moral etc.) they recieve. I have come across and personally know of many Singhs who have the talent and genetics to be among the best in the world... but in all cases either the parents do not support what they do or they simply do not even consider to take their training to the extreme that is required to be among the best.
I can even use myself as an example... I wanted to join a gym when I was 15. But parents did not allow it until I continued begging for another 3 years. To this day (10 years later) they continue to remind me "ussee professional nahai bannana"... referring to my training habits. They were worried my grades may drop because of it... and would blame absolutely any problems on my training...
Anyways, I am not saying that I was gifted or that I would have for sure made it to elite level if I had started training at 15... BUT certainly for the amount of passion I had for sport and still do... who knows? Somone has gotta start trying and go all the way!! Hearing parents say that "we don't want to be professional in any sport" would discorage anyone!
So, anyways sorry for the long post, b
ut I just feel very strongly about the importance of having Sikh presence in elite level sport... parents have got to start seeing sport as a career option!
Instead of building newer, bigger Gurudwaras, how about a Khalsa Sport School!?!?
