  1. Thank you change is going quite well and the schedule's "in" and i'm comfortable with it. Have a wide array of daalan (moongi, chana, masaran, kaalay cholay, white chollay ect) and some barian. Plenty of protein there with peanutbutter sandwiches, vege sandwich with lettuce, tomato, cheese, cucumber, 1000 island dressing. Occasionally have rice and nutella sandwiches. I used to make a lot of potato sabji, might start again to increase callory intake .

That's cool. Do you train as well?

Someone was asking about receipes... I made 'curry' once with mushroom and potato instead of pokarai and it came out really nice, served with rice. You have to have a lot of time on your hands because it takes a long time to cook.

I hope your change is going well singh559... I decided to stop posting to this thread on a regular basis as it seems as though there's not that many people that want to be involved after all.

  3. It's all fine and dandy that folks want to eat healthy but don't let it take over your life. A vast majority of folks best serve themselves and others by keeping things in balance.

I have been through a phase where I was on a super strict diet and became the fittest I have even been in this life yet. (Being able to sustain an average heart rate of 165bpm for 50mins is fairly high on the fitness scale) However, I realized that it was impacting my relations with parents, siblings and friends as they did not follow as strict of a diet as myself. Mind you, they eat fairly healthy but do indulge a little from time to time. After giving it some thought, I came to realize that those relations were quite important. I concluded it was silly for me to put a strain on them because of my strict diet. So now I do indulge with them and keep my exercise routine up. I am just as healthy as I was before all the while enjoy bonding with people close to me.

No one needs to tell me that indian sweets are extremely unhealthy, I know full well what I am eating :)

First of all, I dont like eating somosas or onion bharjees or indian sweets ... i dont like deep fried, spicy food... so im happy not toeat it.

Secondly, this change is not 'for me' is not just about being eating heathly food

Thirdly, I dont have any issues with relations eating different food (i have been eating whatever i want since the ages of 16, i have been buying and eating my own food... i dont eat with family so i have no problems upsetting anyone).

  4. You folks are nuts! I had 3 samosey and besan di barfi for lunch yesterday :biggrin2:

That sounds like my idea of food hell (if you watch saturday morning kitchen those words will make sense).

I don't eat samosey or indian sweets.

This is great, I think we are starting to get a few more participants so I would like to take a register and a few more details, providing people are happy to do so. This will be used to keep track of progress, more importantly... I think if we know who is actively involved and their ambitions or goals we can try to offer more support as a group. I know as the original poster, I started off really well but then after a while started slacking, so even I need a push from time to time.

    SS Username - Age group (16-21/ 21-26/ 27-31/ 31-36/ 37+) - Gender - [Weight kg/ Height/ BMI (all optional)] - Country - Goals (reasons optional) - Excercise programme (current) - any other comments

    For me, this would be:

uksinghni - 27-31 - female - BMI = 20 (Healthy for my age range and geneder) - England - Healthy well balanced diet, increase on homemade fresh foods and cut out on chocolates and biscuits etc (my food goal is to eat a simple well balanced diet for both health and spirital reasons), fitness, tone and strength (add muscle mass through fitness programme and clearly not all goals will be met at the same time but includes longer term goals) - Occasional bike ride, no fixed programme - other comments: amritdhari so strict vegetarian diet and i don't eat out at all, difficult to have a set fitness programme at the moment due to work commitments but could have a more flexible one.

    ...........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Off topic question to UK sangat reading this thread ... i mentioned earlier that once this programme was under way i would be looking to set up a group of people who want to progress and are committed to developing in their sikhi. I have aimed this at UK sangat because of the time differences between zones. If anyone is interested then either let me know (if you have an account send me an instant message and i will be in touch) and if there are enough people interested i will set up a new thread under the appropriate heading.

  6. A detox is when you give up certain foods (or could be alcohol if this is consumed) for a short period of time, like 2-7 days maximum, you follow a very simple diet (usually plenty of water, fruit, raw vegetables etc). The idea is that it cleanses the insides (although I don't think it's been scientifically proven) and we didn't do a detox because we are following a balanced diet that includes all food groups. What we are trying to do is reduce the bad fats and make healthier choices. I am trying to cut out as much processed food as I can.

s1ngh from what you have said so far, I don't think you have just put weight on by eating pizza. I just don't think you have always made nutritious food choices and you mentioned missing breakfast and not being so active, I think this would have contributed. I think it would be wise to cut out coke but your choice.

  7. I am wearing this tshirt to work which I have been trying to squeeze into since 2008 :) hahaha.

I am losing weight, but I am not weighing myself, just going by the feeling. My diet is improving each day, I have given up juices and drink water instead. I bought 1L bottle of spring water and once that was finished, I just refill it at work. Apart from that, I make sure I eat fruit throughout the afternoon so my lunch is pretty reasonable. Not too light and not too heavy.

I think, the healthy lifestyle does take some getting used to it, I am still at the early stages but I like it :)

Oh and If I want to eat something unhealthy, I just have very little of it for taste. Like found this Ladoo in the fridge, I had a quarter of it, instead of having one or two like before. So If I want to eat things like Ladoos, cakes, I just have very small portion now.

well done bhajee, you really are setting a good example.

  8. Phaenji, our situation is such that I have to rely at least one time meal either on frozen or from outside. Hoping for stable change probably next year :)

    Yesterday:

    Breakfast : coffee

Lunch : taco bell - crunch wrap (no sour/meat) and one 7layer burrito (no sour cream)

Dinner : three baked naans with home cooked spinach/paneer. fat free yogurt and milk.

misc: 3ish glass of water. 2 cups of coffee and a cup of tea.

    Today:

    Am - green tea

2pm - about to eat approx. two plates of homemade rice pilau/pilaf with milk.

Going to 5 mile hiking in an hour after heavy meal with our dog.

Bhajee, you need to have a sensible breakfast, don't skip meals. Tea/ coffee for breakfast doesn't count. What snacks are you having?

Well done for getting the hike in.

  9. Sundays is pasta night. Wholewheat pasta with a side-salad and some low-fat cottage cheese.

Exercise is currently limited to 5 days a week. I don't think I have it in me to train for 7 days at this moment in time. My aim is to, eventually, get on my stationary bike and start high-intensity cycling, which was a staple of mine just under a decade ago alongwith a very effective weight-training regime. But that's very, very far into the future.

Training 7 days a week is not recommended... unless you are talking about a 30 minute strol or something light on some days. Recovery is equally as important, especially when doing high intensity training as mentioned by RavindaSingh.

  10. Ravinda Singh "Interesting have u guys been doin excercise whilst on thi detox ?"

    Gurfateh jee

This is part of a bigger process which I haven't explained/ shared yet, the first step is to tackle the diet which can be harder than introducing exercise.... having said that we are all doing this for different reasons, some people want to loose weight. There's not that many of us actively involved yet. I know that one or two of the regular posters or active participants are partaking in regular exercise, one person visits the gym on a regular basis and has a trainer to support them, others are going for walks. I have been going on bike rides as I haven't had time to make it to the gym but it's actually quite good exercise.

  11. I have been drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Breakfast, two slices of bread with nutella with chah.

Lunch, Had noodles with vegetables and a banana.

    Snak, Actimel yoghurt.

    An Apple.

You seem to be doing well bhaje... keep it up

I had a jacket potato, salad, cheese and a 2 tablespoons of beans for lunch

  12. Luckily for you, Kaljugi, I am resident Professor of Vitamins at Cambridge University, as well as being honourary Head of the Nutrients Depart at Oxford, I am thus in a position to advise you that it is safe for you take the multivitamins as well as the one D3 per day. Can I also take this opportunity to recommend a really tasty vegetarian item for you ? I'd been eating all my life but recently gave up meat after pressure from my wife, for health reasons. I did however, crave meat sometimes, with many of the vegetarian frozen meal options tasting quite horrible. I tried very hard to find something that tasted like Subway's Veggie Patty. I have now found it, and it tastes so good I really don't miss meat at all. Its the 'Garden Gourmet' Company's Veggie Burgers , available at Tesco (and possibly other supermarkets) . It really is very unusual for a frozen vegetarian food in that it genuinely tastes super felicious. Exactly like Subway's veggie patty. I'm mentioning it here on the 'healthy living' section not because I believe it is a super healthy food but because i do believe its important to give those that are trying hard to maintain a healthy veggie diet something to consider in terms of taste. I'm not saying I've given up meat forever...After all, wedding season is just around the corner and i just know I'll be eating some meat at some of those functions.....but since I've been on a veggie diet the last few months I've felt a whole lot healthier (both physically and mentally) and lost some extra weight. Without the 'Garden Gourmet' range though, I don't think I coulda lasted this long.

West London Singh, sounds like you have already made the biggest step, like why give up now? Don't let wedding season spoil your vegetarian diet.

  13. Breakfast: Two malabari paratha (South indian style parountha) along with penny size achaar - 290 cal each Cup of cofee with spoon sugar Lunch: Footlong Flatbread sandwich with no sauce but bit extra cheese, spinach/vegies etc from subway. medium cup of diet coke Dinner: 1 and 1/2 plate of rice with yellowish daal with fat free yogurt. Misc: About 6ish glass of water whole day, two crossiants (1 around noon) and another during eve with tea. thats what i thought when i bought him but now he is more lazier than me lol.. i remember days when he use to wake me up at 5 but now he sleeps till im about to leave home.

Some good stuff s1ingh, like dinner sounds good. I know your trying to loose some weight, so I would strongly recommend that you start making your own lunches, instead of buying subway and the crossiants are really not a sensible snack... butter, sugar, pastry isn't going to help you shift the pounds. Do you have any fruit intake?

  14. I went for a walk for the first time in many, many years. Various "rogs" and injuries are finally clearing up so I feel like I'm up to it. It's the first bit of exercise I've had in ages (apart from doing the vacuum cleaning, lol). Last year's attempt at getting active ended up in failure for varying reasons and my health suffered for the latter half of the year - too much too soon I think.

I'm really happy with my food in-take and the quality of food in terms of it not being junk or fattening. The only treat I have are chocolate digestives (about 3 biscuits) with a cup of tea, and then I call it a day.

I was wondering if anyone knew whether it was safe to consume a multi-vitamin in addition to Vitamin D3? I've been taking Vitamin D3 before my evening meal for the past year and it's worked wonders. But I just feel I need that little bit more energy because of my limited diet in terms of it not being full of the nutrients that meat and egg eaters might have.

I don't know but I don't think it's recommended, you haven't specified how much Vitamin D is in your multivitamins, I would make sure the combination of the two isn't more than the recommended daily amount. I'm guessing it will be but I am no expert on vitamins... best to check with your GP.

  15. the next day pizza again, and pizza and pizza

Can I suggest you find something more productive to do than post unwanted messages on this thread please. I am sure there's plenty of other things that would be more benefical to you, perhaps find a good book. I am sure there are plenty of recommendations under one of the other topics. Thanks.
