  1. You must study to be frank with the world. Frankness is the child of honesty and courage.

Say just what you mean to do, on every occasion, and take it for granted that you mean to do right. If a friend asks a favor, you should grant it, if it is reasonable; if not, tell him plainly why you cannot; you would wrong him and wrong yourself by equivocation of any kind.

Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or keep one; the man who requires you to do so is dearly purchased at the sacrifice. Deal kindly but firmly with all your classmates; you will find it the policy which wears best.

Above all, do not appear to others what you are not.If you have any fault to find with any one, tell him, not others, of what you complain; there is no more dangerous experiment than that of undertaking to be one thing before a man's face and another behind his back.

We should live, act, and say nothing to the injury of any one. It is not only for the best as a matter of principle, but it is the path of peace and honor.

In regard to duty, let me, in conclusion of this hasty letter, inform you that nearly a hundred years ago there was a day of remarkable gloom and darkness -- still known as "the dark day" -- a day when the light of the sun was slowly extinguished, as if by an eclipse.

The Legislature of Connecticut was in session, and as its members saw the unexpected and unaccountable darkness coming on, they shared in general awe and terror. It was supposed by many that the last day -- the day of judgment -- had come. Some one, in the consternation of the hour, moved an adjournment.

Then there arose an old legislator, Davenport, of Stamford, and said that, if the last day had come, he desired to be found at his place doing his duty, and therefore moved that candles be brought in, so that the House could proceed with its duty.

There was quietness in that man's mind, the quietness of heavenly wisdom and inflexible willingness to obey present duty. Duty, then, is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things like the old Puritan. You cannot do more; you should never wish to do less. Never let your mother or me wear one gray hair for any lack of duty on your part.

  2. Some people gave some really bad remarks regarding my sikhi saroop . I keep untrimmed beard and tie yellow parna ( the ones we get as siropa from Gurudwara ) . Sometimes my friend would give joke to my turban like "Open that thing and let some fresh air flow" along with hand movements . I think this same thing happened some 5 times ..

How to tackle such people in future , apart from beating them ? thank you

    Dear Sarabjeet

I too used to have this trouble ,because I used to live in an area in the UK, which had the highest number of reported racist incidents.I was also physically attacked by a group of skinheads ,In my experience these people make bad remarks because they have no teacher to instruct them and they are themselves hurting so seek to hurt.

These people usually want to provoke a reaction ,be proud of your saroop, but humble enough not to beat them.Turn the other cheek and forgive them 500 times atleast.

  3. May I quote plato

'The man who has been guided thus far in the mysteries of love, and who has directed his thoughts towards examples of beauty in due and orderly succession, will suddenly have revealed to him as he approaches the end of his initiation a beauty whose nature is marvellous indeed, the final goal of all his previous efforts. This beauty is first of all eternal; it neither comes into being nor passes away, neither waxes nor wanes; next, it is not beautiful in part and ugly in part, nor beautiful at one time and ugly at another, nor beautiful in this relation and ugly in that, nor beautiful here and ugly there, as varying according to its beholders; nor again will this beauty appear to him like the beauty of a face or hands or anything else corporeal, or like the beauty of a thought or a science, or like the beauty which has its seat in something other than itself, be it a living thing or the earth or the sky or anything else whatever; he will see it as absolute, existing alone with itself, unique, eternal, and all other beautiful things as partaking of it, yet in such a manner that, while they come into being and pass away, it neither undergoes any increase or diminution nor suffers any change...a man's life should be spent in the contemplation of absolute beauty...and he will be able to bring forth not mere reflected images of goodness but true goodness, because he will be in contact not with a reflection but with the truth. And having brought forth and nurtured true goodness he will have the privilege of being beloved of God, and becoming, if ever a man can, immortal himself' (Symposium, 211).

  4. They transferred a loss making asset.

(approx £19,OOO loss on Ye March 2010 Accounts and they owe almost £200,000),

They were under pressure from Satkaar ,to address the Sandesh ,in a roundabout way they did,( better than ignore it) .

We must call no one thieves unless we have facts ,as that is slander, and not becoming of us.

As a newbie here ,I was saddened to read that the Giani was attacked ,I do not know if this is true, but I know that he should have been protected by the Sangat .

I guess all the people who should have been defenders ,were busy on this forum waiting to challenge me.

Just me on here ,you are a suspicious lot ,My enthusiam is waning believe me! Probably will give up on this forum, as many of you seem a little on the paranoid side lol

  5. Medare, I didn't enter for your defence, but to encourage debate on the topic for a just conclusion.

Whilst I appreciate poetry in general, it is naive to question the teachings of Gurbani with a few lines (if at all!), however I hope you can find your answers from Gurbani itself.

If my personal opinions are to be brought to the fore, I am a staunch opposer of an Anand Karaj being conducted anywhere else than in a Gurdwara in the appropriate manner.

What would you do if an Anand Karaj was to take place in a nightclub venue, during the daytime even if there is no alcohol on the premesis at the time? Would you accept that? (I dread you say yes!)

It's not about whether alcohol is present, it's what the venue symbolises and what general attachments exist to the conventional form of the venue.

    Dear Ekam

I would like to state that I no longer have the beautiful form of a Sikh, although for 18 years I did.

On the last thread which was 20 pages long, I did not lay down for the lack of your defence,

I was glad you entered, because you stated you just read before and never posted,

Me the first day I read, I started to post,I'm a bit rash.

The lines are not to teach ,just thoughts expressed,

Look at the venue ,its a Victorian Mansion ,with many distinct areas,

It looks a very classy place ,costing £6000 on a Saturday ,not a Night Club,

(Perhaps the House may even confirm, that the party was in the grounds only.)

I'm pretty sure this does not even come under the 2006 Sandesh.

This is a Beautiful Shabad that explains that it is the Guru that purifies places not the other way round.

  6. I welcome your invitation (may not be the right word) to continue on the forum and I fully intend to - both to learn and to contribute

I'm very glad you entered when you did, and here are two rhyming couplets, Poetry is a thought expressed in words ,not teaching anything just like Poetry.

    We are the music makers,

And we are the dreamers of dreams,

    Wandering by lone sea-breakers,

    And sitting by desolate streams;—

    World-losers and world-forsakers,

On whom the pale moon gleams:

Yet we are the movers and shakers

Of the world for ever, it seems.

    Arthur O'Shaughnessy

(The phrase "movers and shaker" originates from this Ode .)

  7. mr sukhdev "singh" i have been reading your posts for around a week now..and i cant help not reply any more. u seriously gotta be the dumbest pr**k i have met. you need to get ur head checked out n get it outa ur dudley manz back side.

and if you want my name..den pm me your number, n den we can meet up and have a CIVILISED convo as punjabi men :) jus remember meh ta vi maa da dodh pitaaya! after ALL Means have failed it is righteous to raise the sword. thays what OUR guru ji has said!

oh and this is not an aggresive reply. i just want a civilised convo. cant men just meet and talk? :)

Swearing sikhs, I wonder whether that is now advocated by the Panth.

  8. SukhdevSinghMedare Ji, please keep your comments in-line with Panthic/Sri Akal Takht Sahib Maryada. If you keep posting comments that go against this rule, or SikhSangat rules and guidelines, then Sewadars will have no other option than to put you under Moderation. Please be advised this is your first and last warning.

Anyone who offers a different opinion to your majority membership, and the biased moderators intervene

This is not the Voice of the Sikhs, its a platform for the propogation of the Amritdhari Sikh view,

Is that all this forum is?In that case please rename the forum ,so that, liberal Sikhs do not accidently enter your jaded world.

  9. A historic victory that I'm sure will go down in the history books

Perhaps someone should check the IQ of some of the supporters of Satkaar ,as they are easily led,and believe a major insult was prevented, despite a thirty year period, where no one really perceived anything wrong with it .

I implore you to look deeper within and higher than the virtue of abstinence.

If a man drinks 1 can of beer in happiness that is Son is to be married ,but still has a Sikh Faith ,may he not be allowed to invite his Guru to attend.

I have met many men who partake in a glass of wine but have the purest of souls .And if with honest effort one bought a beer ,would that not be better than with dishonest means buying a soft drink.

Sikhs being a warrior clan are so good at fighting ,that when they can,t find anyone else to fight ,they seem to find something to fight about.

Sorry I cannot reply to you unless you provide your real name .So that you when you start to resort to insults, like on the Dudley thread, I will atleast have some recourse.

  10. Brilliant! A bit of a breakthrough! Mr Medare want's the Sikhs of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj to lend a hand and join in with the Dudley Committee and make it what it should be!!!

Fantastic, may be he is saying that the committe will listen to all advice and guidance already given to them at the meetings that have already been held (the meetings, and the points that were raised, which are mentioned on this thread many times)

Dear Mr Medare, are you saying you and the committee are prepared to listen to the advice already given to the committee at previous meetings? Be honest now!

Brother I do not know who will listen but speak ,help anyway that is noble and the way , I'm saying Dudley people made that Gurdwara from nothing ,make it better by joining them don,t attack them ,Don't laugh when they come short,Be a part of it, from within and leave listening thats not your duty ,just be a part of our success or failure , when you act kindly, that's has it's own merit regardless.

Do not be onlookers,Contribute ,don,t protest thats for on day ,help week in week out!

  11. As a Sikh member of Dudley, who has been living in this town for over 40 years I find it disgraceful that any Sikh would make comments on any media network and not have the strength which was given to us by our Guru's to stand up for our rights and not to be afraid to put their real name to their comments. Sudo names are for the weak who are afraid to stand up to their beliefs and hide behind computer screens.

The facts about Dudley Community Centre are very simple. The community of Dudley (vast majority Sikh) decided to build a community centre for the purpose of small parties to celebrate birthdays, weddings and other functions. It was always clear that alcohol and meat would be served on such occassions and that as a sign of respect, the enterance to the community centre would not be facing the Gurdwara. The contributors of this project have been funded by donations and the generosity of Dudley Metropolitan Council. When this community centre was built no Gurdwara donations were used to build or fund the community centre. Furthermore when the GNSS Temple was demolished and re-built there were no Temple funds used to contribute towards the running of the community centre when it was temporarily used to house the Granth Sahib.

Dudley Council would not give grants of hundreds of thousands of pounds if any individual religious group stipulated that they would use the community centre for their individual needs. Therefore this centre was built for the purpose of use by all members of the Dudley community.

Somewhere along the line, with changes over the last 10 years between committee members the community centre has been re-named to represent the Sikh society rather than the Dudley community. Efforts are being made to correct this error.

There is no need for anyone to distrupt this function on 28th May 2011 and causing aggrevation to a innocent Sikh families happy occassion. Dudley is a peaceful community and we are capable of dealing with our own moral and religious affairs.

    Thank you Wada Bhaji

These people seem to avoid being sued for slander by making up names!

  12. It is not good for the majority to impose their values on a minority.

In a pluralist society there will be differences in the interpretation of the goods or ideals to be achieved .

For example Protestants and Catholics share essentially the same faith but differ in conventions.

I see a distinction between the Hall over the road and the Gurdwara itself .

If you do not see it ,thats ok, its only my humble opinion.

I believe I have said nothing to disrespect my brothers.
