It is with great anticipation that we announce that the 3rd annual, Yudh 2005 – Sikh Martial Arts Tournament, will be taking place on August 21st starting at 12 noon at the Sikh Spiritual Center (Rexdale Gurdwara, 9 Carrier Drive, Rexdale, ON). Youth Keertan Darbar in relation to the tournament will be held the night before from 6pm-11pm.(Aug 20th)
The tournament which is now in its 3rd year has been presented every
year at a different venue and showcases some of the best Gatka players
from across North America. This year's tournament will feature
competitors from across Canada, the United States, United Kingdon and India.
New this year, in addition to the primary faree soti (stick and
shield) gatka tournament, will be a kirpan (sword) spinning and a
damalaa (turban) tying competition. The fari soti competition carries
with it a grand cash prize of $1000, and a $300 prize for the runner
up. Both the kirpan and damalaa competition will also have cash and
prizes for the winners.
Last year's tournament winner, Tegbhir Singh (Abbotsford, BC) will
once again compete to uphold his title as the North American Gatka
Champion, facing off against many new faces and past seasoned
veterans.
The tournament is, but another initiative to promote Sikhi on the part
of the Canadian Organziation of Sikh Students (COSS).
