    Khadoor Sahib, April 16

A jatha of Pakistani Sikhs today performed ‘kirtan’ for the fist time after the Partition of the country in the sanctum sanctorum of Darbar Sahib here today to mark the first day of 500th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Angad Dev. The devotees who had come here from far flung areas, including foreign countries, listened to the kirtan with rapt attention.

A jatha of 534 Sikh devotees, comprising women and children had reached Khadoor Sahib from Pakistan. The jatha is led by Mr Mahesh Singh Khalsa Chairman of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Singh Sabha, Kashmore, District Jacobabad, Singh. Baba Sewa Singh, chief organiser of the celebrations, welcomed the jatha in Darbar Sahib and honoured the jatha members with Siropas.

Earlier, a high tech multimedia Sikh museum on LCD touch screens was inaugurated by Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar Akal Takht. The museum is the first of its kind in the world. It has four LCD touch screens which provide vast information about the Sikh history and religion, Sikh generals, Gurmukhi script, Sikh scriptures and sports. The LCD screens can be operated with the touch of a finger and have main menu in three languages — Hindi, Punjabi and English.

It has subject matter of approximately 50,000 pages. A robot would narrate the Sikh history to the devotees in a unique way.

Apart from the LCD screens, the museum hall also has portraits related to the life of Guru Angad Dev. After the inauguration of the museum Bhai Gurdas Mini Auditorium was also inaugurated. This 300 sq feet area auditorium is equipped with multimedia projector and computer.

    A documentar

y on the “Bohar”, an old tree on the premises of the gurdwara, was also shown to the visitors on the occasion. In this documentary, the 600-year-old Bohar tree explains its experiences during its life span of 600 years.

Meanwhile, three different processions started from Dera Baba Nanak and Matte di Serai (Muktsar). A number of ‘langars’ and ‘chhabils’ were organised by Baba Jagtar Singh of ‘Kar Sewa Wale’ and other Sikh institutions at many places.

The organisers did not allow holding of any political function. However, senior leaders of different political parties, including the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh and Mr Parkash Singh Badal would visit the city on April 18 — the last day of the celebrations.

  6. A couple of points -

If I remember correctly, Bhai Manpreet Singh arranged to do Keertan at Darbar Sahib when he met Jathedar Vedanti a few weeks ago in Birmingham.

Also, it is my understanding that not any and every jatha can do Keertan at Darbar Sahib; rather it is only those that can adhere to Darbar Sahib's Maryada, which includes doing Keertan without pothees and in the relevant raag. At least this was how it was done in past times.

    Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

    Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

veerji, any raggi jatha can do kirtan. but he should be amritdhari, n wearing proper clothes means he should nt wear pant shirt (kurta pajama), above da age of 18. one of sgpc member told me all tis. :umm: da starting 1st shabad should be in proper raag.

    Preparing

-On the day, wash both body and kesh.

-Dont put oil/gel on kes once dried.

-When tying daster, keep the top part open. The Singh will attempt to open that part and sprinkle amrit on your kes. If he can't access it, he'll just sprinkle on the dastar.

-Obviously have the 5 Ks (ask before hand what

    these are - ie keski...).

    When partaking

-Go to the toliet before (i've seen people rush out afterwards!)

-Listen the which kneeling position you must be in (some have different 'heroic' postures to others).

-5 bania will be read, you may be required to stand with a Kirpan. Keep cool for 30mins - 45mins.

-When amrit is sprinkled on the face, dont wipe it off. let it dry (may feel sticky).

-Amrit bata will go around, drink as much as you like!

-Karah Prasad will go around, again eat as much as you like.

-Rehit will be discussed, ask questions if necessary.

    Life really begins now... ^_^^_^^_^

Tohra (Patiala) - Harvesting stopped in this part of Punjab today to allow more than one lakh people to pray for and remember Akali patriarch Gurcharan Singh Tohra at his native village here. People trudged to the huge ‘pandal’ set up in fields on the outskirts of this village on foot, tractor trailers, cars, jeeps and trucks to attend the ‘bhog’ ceremony of the ‘son of the soil’.

It was truly a solemn affair with the Tohra family itself organising the “bhog” ceremony of the late SGPC (Search) chief. After the culmination of the “akhand path” at around 10 a.m. “kirtan” was organised for about three hours by prominent ‘ragis’ of the state.

Giani Rattan Singh, Jathedar Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib and Giani Iqbal Singh, Jathedar Takht Sri Patna Sahib, present siropas to Ms Joginder Kaur Tohra.

Immediately after the end of the ‘kirtan’, Akal Takht (Search) Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti (Search) announced the decision to confer the “Panth Ratan” Award on Tohra. A resolution to this effect was read out on the occasion which was followed by slogans of “Bole so nihal, Sat Sri Akal”. The Jathedar said the decision of the Tohra family to follow the Sikh “rehat maryada” (religious code) by disposing off the entire ‘angitha’ (remains following cremation) instead of following the “phul chugna” (collection of bones) ceremony should serve as a lesson for everybody. He appealed to the community to do likewise and not take the ashes of their near and dear ones to Haridwar or Kiratpur Sahib but dispose the

m off at the nearest source of water.

After this a memento was given to Ms Joginder Kaur, widow of the late SGPC President, on behalf of the SGPC. ‘Siropas’ were also presented to Ms Joginder Kaur by Jathedar Vedanti, Giani Balwant Singh of Damdama Sahib (Search), Jathedar Iqbal Singh of Patna Sahib (Search), Jathedar Rattan Singh of Hazur Sahib, Jathedar Tarlochan Singh of Kesgarh Sahib (Search) and Mohan Singh, Head Granthi of Harmandar Sahib.

After the presentation of the ‘siropas’ the scene shifted to the political stage which was set up adjacent to the stage on which the Guru Granth Sahib had been placed. The stage, on which leaders from all political parties were seated, was placed at a lower level. Tohra’s confidant Maheshinder Singh Grewal took over the proceedings following which tributes were paid to the late SGPC chief by politicians from all major parties in the state for more than three hours.

Union Minister Arun Shourie read out a condolence message sent by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Prime Minister in his message said the death of the SGPC chief was a personal loss for him and the country and that Tohra had maintained a fine balance between religion and politics throughout his life. While speaking about a demand asking for the establishment of a Special Institute for Cancer and Heart Diseases in memory of Tohra, he said he would take up the issue with the Prime Minister today itself.

The Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, who was accompanied by a dozen members of the Congress Legislature Party, including six ministers and Pradesh Congress President H.S. Hanspal, said the state government would also take up the issue of establishment of the medical institute. The Chief Minister said he would also take up the issue with the Centre, adding that the state government could also go ahead on its own if the people of Tohra village were ready to give land for the purpose.

The Chief Minister also announced that he would recommend the late SGPC leader’s name

for a national honour. He said noted Punjabi academician Dr Balkar Singh had already been entrusted with the responsibility of coming out with a book on Tohra in six months’ time.

SAD president Parkash Singh Badal thanked political leaders from various parties who were present on the occasion. He said Tohra was the only personality in Sikh history who had done unparalleled ‘seva’ in religious, social and political spheres. He also presented a “dastar” (turban) to the late SGPC chief’s son-in-law Harmel Singh Tohra besides expressing his love and respect to the family
