Agra: A British tourist jumped from her hotel room in Agra today, allegedly to avoid being molested by the owner of the hotel who had forced his way into her room.
The 30-year-old jumped from the balcony on the first floor and is in hospital with head injuries; both her legs are fractured. The incident happened in hotel Agra Mahal, located in Rakabganj in the city.
The hotel owner, Rahul, has been arrested.
The British woman is currently under the protection of local police. The UK Embassy is in touch with her and is providing consular access and assistance.
Just this morning, the UK had revised its advisory to its citizens travelling to India, saying women should be cautious. The advisory cited the recent gang-rape of a Swiss woman in Madhya Pradesh.
"A Swiss national suffered a serious sexual attack in Madyha Pradesh on 16 March. Women travellers should exercise caution when travelling in India even if they are travelling in a group," the advisory said.
Last week, a Swiss woman cycling through Madhya Pradesh with her husband was gang-raped and assaulted by six men; all accused have been arrested.
