New cornea layer named after Indian
Scientists have found a previously undetected layer in the cornea and named it after the Indian researcher who made the discovery. The findings, by researchers from the University of Nottingham in UK, could help surgeons to improve outcomes for patients undergoing corneal grafts and transplants. The new layer has been dubbed the Dua's layer after professor Harminder Dua who discovered it. The human cornea is the clear protective lens through which light enters the eye. Scientists previously believed the cornea to be composed of five layers - the corneal epithelium , Bowman's layer, the corneal stroma, Descemet's membrane and the corneal endothelium. The new layer is located between the corneal stroma and Descemet's membrane ."Ophthalmology textbooks will literally need to be re-written ," Dua, professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, said.
