  4. Punjabi Drivers hug unwelcome, pleads guilty to touching passenger THE matter involving a taxi driver Palwinder SIngh, who assaulted a paying customer has been adjourned for one week so the mans defence solicitor can look up authorities for sentencing. The 23-year-old man, Palwinder Singh, pleaded guilty in the Mackay Magistrates Court today to one count of common assault after he inappropriately touched a female passenger when he was driving her home. Magistrate Damien Dwyer said this was more serious than a simple hug because of Singhs position as a taxi driver at the time of the incident. Just as police, ambulance officers and taxi drivers needed to be protected from the public, so too did the public need to be protected, Mr Dwyer said. I take this a little more seriously than a straight common assault, Mr Dwyer said. Late at night (in a) lonely place and (he) assaults a passenger. Ms Krieg said Singh had lived in Australia for four years, while his family resided in his home country. There had already been consequences for his actions. Singh had his licence as a taxi driver suspended shortly after the incident, Ms Krieg said. His decision to hug the woman had affected him emotionally since the incident and he was disappointed with himself. The incident occurred just after midnight on May 25 this year. The mans taxi driving licence was suspended shortly after the incident. The victim woman said that she was shocked when Mr Singh hugged her without permission and ran his hands over her body after dropping her at home late at night. One of the gang beat the man with a metal bar as his girlfriend watched in horror. Ranshi then helped another man ransack the house. When police arrived at the house in Hyde, Greater Manchester, Ranshi tried to flee by leaping from an upstairs window, said prosecutor Adam Lodge. But he fractured his spine as he landed and was arrested.Ranshi, a charity worker whose father Mita is an optician, had never been in trouble with police before. He grew up in a sprawling detached home in Sale and was a pupil at William Hulmes Grammar School before it scrapped its £7,400-a-year fees. Ranshi, who is studying at the University of Bradford, was a talented schoolboy golfer who won a hat-trick of top junior trophies at Washington Golf Club.He denied any wrongdoing and said he was forced to commit the burglary by other men. But a jury found him guilty of aggravated burglary after a trial at Manchesters Minshull Street Crown Court. Judge Mushtaq Khokhar told Ranshi: I still find it difficult as to why you would become involved in something like this, with the parents you have. His father Mita declined to comment on the case. But a neighbour said: They had everything, his family did everything for him and he never wanted for anything perhaps that was the problem. You could not meet a nicer family. They will be devastated. 10 comments Source - http://www.punjaboutlook.com/sikh-students-bright-future-destroyed-by-one-night-of-violent-madness/
  8. Badal seeks PM's help for setting up board at Takht Hazur Sahib HT Correspondent , Hindustan Times Chandigarh, November 08, 2013 First Published: 23:59 IST(8/11/2013) | Last Updated: 00:00 IST(9/11/2013) Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention for the constitution of a board in place of an administrator at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded (Maharashtra) as per provisions of the Nanded Sikh Gurdwara Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib Act, 1956, for managing affairs of this shrine associated with Guru Gobind Singh. Badal asked the PM to immediately take up the matter of immense religious significance for the Sikh community with the union ministry of home affairs, thereby asking the Maharashtra government to immediately initiate action for the constitution of a popular board as the Bombay high court had already directed the state government to initiate action within two months. A special leave petition was filed against the decision of the Bombay high court, which was dismissed by the Supreme Court on October 22. The HC, in its judgment, had directed the Maharashtra government to initiate necessary steps to constitute the board in accordance with Section 6 of the 1956 Act within two months of the date of the order. Badal has also written to Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan to commence the process for the constitution of a board to resolve the religious issue. 9. BJP concedes 4 seats to ally SAD for Delhi polls Atul Mathur, Hindustan Times New Delhi, November 06, 2013 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) have hammered out a seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections slated for December 4. Delhi SAD (Badal) president Manjit Singh GK said the BJP had agreed to let the Sikh party contest on four seats Hari Nagar and Rajouri Garden in west Delhi, Kalkaji in south Delhi and Shahdara in east Delhi. Hari Nagar and Rajouri Garden are considered as Sikh-dominated areas. The BJP has left the decision on us on whether we would like to contest with the BJP symbol or with our own symbol. We will take a call in 2-3 days, Singh said. The Sikh party, BJPs political ally for several years now, had earlier refused to join hands with the BJP in Delhi after the latter refused to give it the seats of its choice. Finally, the ice was broken at a high-level meeting attended by BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior party leaders such as Lal Krishna Advani, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj. The SAD (B) and the BJP had a similar seat-sharing arrangement in 2008 elections. The Sikh party contested on four seats Rajouri Garden, Shahdara, Jangpura and Adarsh Nagar but lost all. There are 70 seats in the Delhi assembly. The SAD (B) received a shot in the arm after its success in 2012 municipal elections, where six of its seven candidates were elected, and then in Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee elections in January this year, where its candidates won 37 of the 46 seats. Buoyed, it insisted on fielding its own candidates from Tilak Nagar, Hari Nagar and Rajouri Garden three Sikh-dominated seats in west Delhi - and also showed interest in contesting on its own party symbol a weighing scale in the assembly polls. The BJP, however, was reluctant to give away Tilak Nagar and Hari Nagar two of its strongholds. Finally, it had to let go of Hari Nagar. 12. Sikh pilot alleges Emirates denied him a job because he wears a turban New Delhi: A pilot has alleged discrimination by the Gulf-based Emirates Airlines, saying that after being shortlisted for an interview he was turned down only because he wears a turban. CNN-IBN has accessed the email exchange between the airline and the pilot. He has been a pilot for almost nine years now, flying more than 5,500 hours both nationally and internationally. But after being shortlisted for an interview with gulf-based Emirates airlines, he didn't get the job because he is a turbaned Sikh. "I got to know from my friends that there is a bias against turbaned Sikhs and I laughed that such a big company would never do that. In the subsequent mails I sent, it was a shocker for me. I was told I need not come as there is a rule being followed and they are not making any changes," he said. To clear any doubts, he emailed a photograph to Emirates. The response was quick. Barely a week before the final round, he was told that since the hat is a mandatory part of the uniform, he had been disqualified. "If they have any policy against turbaned Sikhs they should come forward and it should be mentioned that turbaned Sikhs should not apply. I applied, I got a call, was about to leave and just for my satisfaction wanted to know if there was a certain bias and to my shock got to know that there was a bias that is currently going on. It is uncalled for, unheard of. If you do fulfill the requirements, you should be taken on merit rather than on your religious belief or the way you look," the pilot said. Despite repeated attempts for an official response, Emirates chose to stay away from this controversial topic. Turbaned Sikh pilots are flying aircraft across the world. And considering the turban is an integral part of their culture, several airlines have an exception to their uniform rules. But the emails, a copy of which is available with CNN-IBN clearly indicate how the existing uniform code of Emirates ensures that an entire community is literally banned from working with one of the world's largest airlines. 14. Sadhna Bhagat(PA: ਸਧਨਾ), also called Sadhna Qasai, was a North Indian Muslim poet, Saint Mystic and one of the devotees whose hymn was incorporated in Sri Adi Granth Sahib. Venerated in region of Punjab, among Sikhs, his devotional hymn and intellection within is widely quoted by most of preachers. Being butcher by profession, he was always annoyed by Religious Scholars, who keep such thought that a butcher could not attain spiritual enlightment. His one hymn is present in Adi Granth Sahib, in Raga Bilaval[1], in which he explained that believing in Karmic thought comes to an end after attaining spiritual wisdom (Gurmat) in addition to it he explained to remove an inflated feeling of pride within ourselves to know the Supreme. Sadhna travelling from Sindh reached Panjab during his last days of his life and preached around. At Sirhind, he breathed his last where a historic Mosque was built in his memory and preseved by Punjab Government. His followers are called Sadhna Panthis.[2] Sadhna is considered to be a contemporary of Bhagat Namdev[2][3]. Satgur Ravidas, who studied Satgur Sadhna hymn admired him in his own hymns, as given below: ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਤਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਸਧਨਾ ਸੈਨੁ ਤਰੈ ॥ Naam Dayv, Kabeer, Trilochan, Sadhana and Sain crossed over. Says Ravi Daas, listen, O Saints, through the Dear Lord, all is accomplished. ||2||1|| Sikhs admire and follow the teachings of Sadhna. On Gurmat, Kabir, Nanak, Ravidas, Bhatts etc. all are same and all are treated as Gurus - "spiritual guides". Sikhs bow before Guru Granth Sahib which include the teaching of many who had the same thoughts and views about Almighty. Almighty himself spoke through his Bhagat's, revealing the holy Hymn. 15. PAKISTAN GURDWARA COMMITTEE TO ABIDE BY NANAKSHAHI CALENDAR : SHAM SINGH Amritsar, Oct. 31, 2013 The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) will celebrate 'Gurpurabs' and observe martyrdom days of all Gurus besides other important events of the Sikh history in accordance with the amended Nanakshahi calendar, officially recognised as the Sikh calendar by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). This assurance was given by PSGPC president Sham Singh over the telephone from Pakistan to SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar on Wednesday. The SGPC claimed that Sham Singh called up Makkar and thanked him for presenting a 'siropa' and sword to him through Ramesh Singh Arora, the first Sikh MP of Pakistan. Arora, who was on a weeklong tour of India, returned through the Wagah checkpost. The PSGPC had been celebrating all important Sikh historical events as per the traditional Bikrami calendar. This had caused confusion over the pilgrimage of Sikh jathas from India to Pakistan. *HT Media Ltd. 16. Indian Diplomat Urges US Sikhs to Fund Scholarships in US Universities From Times of India | World | Category RSS: JALANDHAR: The Sikh community in US is considering to set up scholarships in US universities to help students of the Sikh community excel in academics and their respective professional fields. This thinking in the community was bolstered by the visit of Taranjit Singh Sandhu, deputy chief of mission of the India embassy in Washington to Yuba City, California on the invitation of Tierra Buena Gurudwara Committee to attend Guru Granth Sahib Gurta Gaddi celebrations on Saturday. Addressing the congregation in the Gurudwara, Sandhu stated that the best way a community could create an identity for itself in the US was by being successful for which investment in education was indispensable. Sandhu is himself from a family of academicians whose father Bishan Singh Samundri remained vice-chancellor of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and his grandfather Teja Singh Samundari was a stalwart of Akali movement in the earlier twentieth century. While gurudwara committee leaders responding to Sandhu's suggestion said that they would actively consider it and would involve the community for further consultation, North American Punjabi Association executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said that the suggestion had been received well in the community and they would now actively work on it. "The community members in US have done well in a few ventures but this step may help the community to create several identity ambassadors when the community was confronting a serious identity crisis," he said.
