  6. Network of Sikh Organisations Wednesday, 2 October 2013 NSO Press Release Coalition of Faith Leaders, Campaigners and Activists Ask Government For More Generous Tax Break For Married Couples Prime Minister Responds London: (2nd of October 2013) The Director of The Network of Sikh Organisations (NSO) Lord Singh was signatory to a letter to The Sunday Telegraph last week, encouraging the government to set a higher rate for planned tax breaks for married couples. The signatories said marriage is a fundamental building block for society, highlighting the financial implications of devastating family breakdown. The signatories included Rt Rev Peter Forster, the Bishop of Chester, Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, President, Oxford centre for training, research and dialogue, Lord Singh Director of the Network of Sikh Organisations, Dr Majid Katme, Muslim member of the Alliance for the Family (and six others; see telegraph.co.uk) The full letter is reproduced below: Sir - As representatives from some of Britains leading think tanks, political activists and faith leaders, we strongly welcome the proposals to recognize marriage in the tax system, via the introduction of a transferable tax allowance. This is long overdue. We believe that marriage is the fundamental building block of human society and provides many tangible and non-tangible benefits to our communities and our children. Family breakdown costs the taxpayer an estimated £46 billion a year. It is therefore clearly in the interests of government and the taxpayer to work to counter the devastating trend of family breakdown. Backing marriage in the tax system is a sensible first step. This is why we urge all political parties not only to back the new transferable tax allowance, but also to ensure that it is not dismissed as an empty gesture. At £150, it has been set too low. To be meaningful it must be paid at a higher rate, even if this means a phased introduction or application of other conditions. Lord Lawson the former Chancellor under Margaret Thatchers government and the politician, who first proposed to introduce the allowances 25 years ago, welcomed the groups intervention. In advance of the Conservative conference this week, David Cameron announced that some married couples would benefit from tax breaks worth up to £200 a year. The prime minister said four million couples would benefit from a £1,000 transferable tax allowance from 2015. 11. 17 years old Harjeet Singh Puli from Labourer family lives his hockey dream Hours after reaching India from Malaysia on Monday, 17-year-old hockey player Harjeet Singh Puli was at the Kurali bus stand in Mohali, waiting for transport to go to his village Niholika. While he waited, Harjeet looked eagerly around, hoping to spot his father, Rampal Singh. Rampal is a daily-wage labourer who does odd jobs in the small town near Chandigarh. He is sometimes found at the bus stand, carrying passengers luggage. Harjeet wanted to show his father his biggest achievement yet: the trophy for the most promising player at the Sultan of Johor Cup under-21 hockey tournament held last week in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. India won the tournament final on Sunday, and the lanky centre half came away leaving a powerful impression with his stickwork. It is never easy to find my father in Kurali. He goes wherever he finds work, sometimes to construction sites. My elder brother Rajwinder Singh also works as a labourer when hes not playing hockey. My sister plays the game too, representing Chandigarh. My family borrowed money to buy me a kit, and one of our relatives pitched in. This trophy will bring joy to all of them, Harjeet said. Harjeet started playing hockey in 2004 at Kuralis Gopal Hockey Academy before joining Surjeet Hockey Academy in Jalandhar in 2008. He was soon part of the Punjab junior team which won the junior national title in 2012 and 2013. Harjeet made his junior national debut in last years Sultan of Johor Cup. I started as a forward but my coach at the Kurali academy advised me to play as a full back. At Surjit Academy, I often dreamt of becoming a full back like (the former India captain and Olympian) Surjit Singhji. But during the junior nationals last year, coaches Avtar Singh and Gurdev Singh advised me to play in the midfield. Manpreet, the junior skipper, also plays there, and has motivated me constantly, Harjeet said. The move to the midfield paid off spectacularly. He is one of the better centre halves in India currently, Baljit Singh Saini, coach of the national junior side, said. With his vision and quick thinking, he has the ability to control the game. This is a very important aspect for a centre half. He is a complete package: his passing, trapping, off-the-ball running is really good, better than most players his age. It is not surprising that he was chosen the best player of this tournament, Saini said. Hockey India has announced an additional cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 for Harjeet, apart from the cash award of the same amount announced for all members of the victorious squad. Harjeet plans to give some of the money to his father, and spend the rest on hockey sticks and shoes. Most of our sticks break after a few days. The ones I use now were given by seniors. Now I hope to buy my own sticks, he said. My father does not know about the cash award yet, and he will be delighted. But then, tomorrow he will again be out, searching for work. 15. Urdu version of Guru Granth Sahib in 2 years Amaninder Pal Sharma, TNN | Oct 3, 2013, 05.44 AM IST PATIALA: To disseminate principles and philosophy of the Sikh religion among Urdu-speaking population of the world, including over nine crore Punjabis residing in Pakistan, Guru Granth Sahib will soon be published in Urdu language. The translation of the holy book has been done by nonagenarian Devinder Pal Singh Sidhu, from Rampura Phul town of Bathinda district, which is being edited by experts at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University in Fatehgarh Sahib. The university hopes to publish the Urdu version of Guru Granth Sahib within the next 1-2 years in phases. The translated version of the hold book will also contain footnotes detailing meanings of important and difficult words and also explaining their central idea. "We have got the voluminous translated draft and got its samples checked from a committee of experts of Sikh theology, including Dr Jaswant Singh Neki, who also has deep understanding of Arabic and Urdu languages. They have given their nod saying that the translated draft can be published with some minor changes. It would take us 1-2 years to publish the Urdu version of Guru Granth Sahib," said Professor Gurmohan Singh Walia, vice-chancellor of the university. Professor Walia said that the draft submitted by Sidhu spans over 32 registers and 16,000 pages and it was translated by him without help from any agency. "He is around 90 years old and retired as a "kanungo" (revenue record keeper). Having served in the revenue department where Urdu and Persian were widely used in official dealings, he is well-versed in these languages and it took him years to translate Guru Granth Sahib," Walia said.
