  1. Guru HarGobind was hailed as Bandi Chhor - the Deliverer of Prisoners - the person who would cut the fetters off the prisoners' feet and set them free. The 52 kings were treated like dirt and were released only because they grasped the hem of Guru Maharaj's robe:

    Try this shabad:

We should treat Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj in the same way as He will free us from this prison we are in. Good values to instill in the youngsters! Otherwise you could take it down the Diwali angle:

and explain differences between Bandhi Chhor & Diwali

    keep up the good work

  2. This was the topic of discussion when Bhai Mallu Saahi Ji spoke to Guru Angad Dev Ji Maharaj. Maharaj told Bhai Mallu Saahi Ji that, “The body will only perish when the following three things happen:

Firstly, when all the breaths allocated to that soul by Akaal Purakh have been used up.

Secondly, when that body which is meant to perish reaches the place Akaal Purakh set aside for it to die.

Thirdly, when the weapon which is meant to kill the body strikes.

The saint soldier cannot die until all of these three things occur. ‘Kaal’ itself shall defend the warrior.

A saint soldier should not worry. He should not be afraid of death. He surely will die, when his time comes. No one will be able to save him then. And no one will be able to kill him if his time to go has not come."

i've not heard of images of Shiva having a beard or seen a statue in that way - that image is the first. however, it's not just the trident of some relevance here but also the chand in Shiva's hair. here are some images:

The universe is created, sustained and destroyed. For us, devte are manifestations of God's Divine Power. But the moment this manifestation of God's Power occurs, God limits it by design and hence the devte are conditioned by the Creator. We call upon God in our prayers to manifest Himself to help us in countless different ways every single day.

  5. topic has gone from asking whether one of the largest GuruGhar in europe could temporarily offer one chair for one bazurug with a zimmerframe to talking about permanent rows of reclining seats imstupid.gif

Guru ji's satkaar should come first and it is inspiring to know that many undergo hardships without asking for chairs. obviously an ideal situation would be no chairs. suggestions:

    • AK-47 veerji mentioned Health. for example a lot of elderly trek across the midlands daily to get to GNNSJ GuruGhar to do sewa and they have a lot of good community activities specifically aimed at them so this helps keep them fit. we should all take more care of our fitness (he says eating his parohta lol)
    • fit railings around Sri Darbar Sahib and where you matha tek as well as assign 2 sewadars of each gender duty to assist those who need it in getting up and down.
    • whether or not to temporarily offer chair(s) at the moment has to be decided locally otherwise Akal Takht should be approached for a final decison on whether or not to temporarily offer chair(s).

given past experience this would be problemmatic but complete clarity is needed. it's only just dawned on me i'm not knowledgeable enough on sikhi to comment on this topic

  6. founders.jpg

Guru Nanak Blind Missionary Society was founded in 1988 by four blind friends, Avtar Singh Mann, Gian Singh Surjit, Rajinder Singh and Sital Singh Sitara, who had a dream to set up, in Punjab, India, a residential music academy and training school for blind children.

:WW: we're lucky to be gifted with sight yet i doubt i'll do a fraction of the sewa they have done for the community. accepting this, even if we can't do that much sewa or inspire anyone then we can still show our support for these causes so please donate and encourage family and friends. also there is a sikhgiving appeal currently as well so these are worthy causes.

  7. The victims are a 75-year-old from Springfield, Va., and a 77-year-old from Burtonsville.

Police say the two were walking in the woods when they came across the group of 6 or seven boys, believed to be about 14 or 15. They say 2 of the teenagers punched the men in the face, causing them to fall to the ground.

  8. i remeber the smethwick indcident. . .was rather halrious. . .the comittee wanted us to throw flowers on him or summit. . .lol. ohh god. . . . it was even funnier when it seemed like he was about to take out his sri sahib a he cudnt asnwer the querstions. . .only if we still had jathedars like shaheed jathedar gurdev singh je kaunke.

    :WW: :WW: :WW: :WW: :WW:

  9. Over the next few years we are going to have more and more people asking for chairs to be placed in the Divan halls, just like what happened in the langar halls.

Now when non Sikhs are coming to Gurudwara for wedding etc, they are too requesting chairs.

    Khalsa jis,

i can see your reasoning behind making sangat aware as non-Sikhs at weddings do strangely get treated like royalty - people act as if they have never seen a non-Sikh before lol also the population is ageing, in the UK at least so more people may want chairs in future.

however, if that did start taking place then there will also be people who will get together and counter it. dont forget at the same time you youngsters will be more involved in GuruGhar sewa and will have more of a say in these things

  10. yaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwn

oh please - you mean that little old bibi sitting in the chair? next to the zimmerframe?

are you her physician? did you bother talking to her about it? is the rest of Sangat blissfully unaware of her physical abilities? or did you see her sitting in the presence of Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj and felt SO outraged that like a true saint soldier you stood there and took her picture and posted it on the forum?

who knows maybe the bibia at your GuruGhar have more himmat than the naujawans. maybe this precious moment of your time could have been better spent focusing your energy in the direction of Guru Ji instead of at this old lady. i dunno.

yes at the age of 60 Guru Amar Das Ji showed respect by walking backwards whilst fetching water for Guru Angad Dev Ji to never turn his back, yes we should show maximum respect as possible for Guru Maharaj but the duty is left on each of our own heads anyway!

why cant we just focus on ourselves? a member of my family is a bazurug in a wheelchair and is prevented from seeing Guru Maharaj because the truth is these days we got no love.

i wish i recited Gurbani, absorbed it and then practised it as i could then stop wasting my life away arguing with people lol where has it got me?

agree with your point - we're not capable of fathoming Mahraj, same as we can't understand or comprehend God, all we are capable of is grasping at His hem and holding on for dear life.

  13. On August 21, 2007, Charanjit Singh Ghai's trip from San Francisco to London became a nightmare. Charanjit was accompanying his daughter, a political science student at University of California Berkeley, to London for her semester abroad.

At the airport, Charanjit was able to successfully walk through a metal detector without sounding an alarm. Once he had cleared security and was waiting for his bags, a TSA screener tapped his shoulder and told him that his turban would nevertheless need to be patted down. He was surprised by the screener's demand, especially since his mini-turban was more akin to a simple patka (a square cloth tied tightly over the head) than a turban. He asked the screener and her supervisor that his turban instead be checked with a hand-held wand. The supervisor replied that wanding was not possible for turbans and that a turban pat down was "mandatory."

The supervisor threatened Charanjit: "If you don't do it, I'll have you escorted out."

Under pressure, confused and distressed by the idea of having his turban touched by anyone else, Charanjit offered to remove his turban quickly to show he was not hiding anything. After he removed his turban, the supervisor insisted that he also be able to pat down Charanjit's hair. Charanjit was shamefully forced to untie his hair in public view.

"This exercise was all done to demean me. It was unbearable."

Charanjit Singh to the Sikh Coalition's staff attorneys.

Again the supervisor threatened him, "If you don't do it, I'll have you escorted out."

Standing with his head naked, Charanjit stood and waited as the supervisor humiliated him by placing his small cloth turban in a bin and through an x-ray machine. Charanjit's shirt or pants, which both consisted of more cloth than his turban, were spared the X-ray machine.

"This exercise was all done to demean me," Charanjit told the Sikh Coalition's team of staff attorneys. "It was unbearable."

    An Ineffective Policy

The disgraceful public undressing of Charanjit Singh is a disturbing example of extreme but permissible conduct under the TSA's new headdress policy. What happened to this proud Sikh man was not only hurtful to the whole Sikh community, but also diverted America's resources away from genuine security threats.

While the Sikh Coalition is grateful that TSA's top leadership is willing to find a "workable solution" to Sikh concerns about the policy, the Coalition remains troubled that the new headwear screening policy still remains in effect.

The Sikh Coalition is hopeful that its engagement with the TSA, along with other Sikh and non-Sikh organizations, will lead to a solution similar to the screening procedures put in place soon after the 9/11 attacks. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. Sikh community groups worked closely with Department of Transportation officials to devise an airport screening protocol that would meet national security requirements, while safeguarding religious pluralism.

The Coalition will keep the community updated as our engagement with the TSA deepens. In the meantime, we continue to ask everyone to sign the community petition to Secretary Chertoff as a means of demonstrating grassroots concern with the new screening procedures, and to document your experience with the new screening procedures.
