  4. I had recently gone to hazur sahib, nanded. I was very disturbed because of the following rituals that take place there. THIS IS JUST MY POINT OF VIEW AND SO SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN BY ANY OTHER MEANS. 1. AFTER THE REHRAS SAHIB IN THE EVENING 3 HINDUS SIT RIGHT INSIDE THE GURUDWARA COMPLEX AND PLAY SHEHNAI DURING THE CHAUPAI SAHIB. THEY ARE SOMEWHAT IN THE RSS CLOTHING. I WENT UP TO THEM TO STOP THIS MANMAT I WAS SHOCKED TO HEAR THAT THEY WERE APPOINTED BY THE MANAGEMENT . PEOPLE WERE TAKING MATHAS TO THEM AND GIVING THEM MONEY. IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE? 2. I KNOW DASAM GRANTH IS A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE BUT I WAS LISING TO ITS VYAKHYA IN THE EVENING. THE PREACHER REPEATEDLY SAID " GURU SAAB ONLY LOVED THOSE PEOPLE WHO GAVE HIM WEAPONS AND HORSES" I HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT THIS SO PLS DON'T GET AFTER ME.I WOULD LIKE SOME GIANIJI TO PU LIGHT ON THIS. AFTER THE BHOG OF THE DASSAM GRANTH , A GOAT IS SLAUGHTERED RIGHT NEXT TO THE NISHAN SAAB AND TILAK IS PUT ON THE SIRI SAAB OF GURUJI. IS THIS RIGHT? THE ARDAAS PERFORMED THERE IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT IS DONE IN PUNJAB , DELHI. I THINK BEING JUS 300 KMS AWAY FROM THE RSS HQ IN NAGPUR AND 2000KM AWAY FROM PUNJAB THE RSS HAS ALTERED THE PRACTICES IN THAT REGION.

  14. In a blow to the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) alliance in Punjab, Paramjit Singh Sarna (65), of the Congress-backed Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was unanimously re-elected as president of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee (DSGPC) on Saturday. Sarna was elected DSGPC chief for the sixth time. Coming four days ahead of the May 13 polls to nine Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, Sarna’s re-election is significant as it is set to give a big boost to the Congress, which is in direct contest against the BJP-SAD (Badal) alliance in the state. In the faction-ridden DSGPC, while the SAD is backed by Congress, SAD (Badal) group supports the BJP. “This will definitely affect the BJP’s prospects in Punjab,” said Sarna who is also the president of SAD. The outcome is important for Delhi Congress, coming, as it is in the aftermath of the recent protests by the Sikh community in the Capital over the 1984 riots. The Badal group was in the forefront of the recent agitation by Sikhs in the city. DSGMC had initially said that it would not support the Congress in Northeast and South Delhi parliamentary seat from where the party had fielded Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, the two leaders alleged to be involved in the riots. But, it changed its decision after the two leaders were dropped. DSGMC support is important for Congress in Delhi as the religious body manages gurdwaras, several Sikh schools, colleges, hospitals and educational and technical institutions in the city. “We are against all those involved in the ’84 riots but why penalise the entire Congress party for that,” said Sarna. He was unanimously elected after the Badal group did not put up any candidate. Of the 51 member, while 41 voted for Sarna, nine belonging to the Badal group abstained. Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, secretary general SAD (Badal) said: “DSGPC is a religious body but it seems now the Congress has taken over it. We boycotted the elections to protest against the politicisation of this religious body by Sarna.” The Badal group originally had 21 members. Bhogal alleged that in the run-up to the DSGPC elections, Sarna and his supporters bought 12 members over. Sarna refuted the allegations. Delhi High Court had on April 24 directed the DSGMC to convene its general body meeting within 15 days and hold elections to the Executive Board within a month thereafter in accordance with the DSGMC Act

  18. NEW DELHI: How can you be a Sikh without Kaur? If you believed casteism is rampant only in Uttarakhand, Bihar or Madhya Pradesh, our Capital is not far from it. A student of Delhi University (DU) was asked to use ‘Kaur’ as a middle name so that she is eligible for a minority certificate. Nainpreet Narula, now Nainpreet Kaur Narula, was denied a minority certificate by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) because she did not have Kaur as a surname. Though not in favour, she was forced to make Kaur her surname as she has to submit her minority certificate for admission in Khalsa College. Narula insisted that she is a Sikh, but the DSGMC refused to entertain the request without the introduction of Kaur surname. "I told them that my family is from Sikh community. They argued that if I am ashamed of using Kaur as a surname or middle name, I won’t get a minority certificate from them," stated Narula. Paramjit Sarna, president, DSGMC iterated the same sentiments. Whoever feels shamed of putting Kaur as a surname need not practise Sikhism, here are students who, after getting minority certificate from us, get admission in engineering colleges even when they are far behind in the merit list. We certify them for being Singh and Kaur, added Sarna. What is the definition of minority for an educational institute? Jaswinder Singh, principal, Khalsa College said: "We have quota for Sikh students where we generally give 5% relaxation to the students with minority certificate. Though Kaur and Singh are identities for Sikh students, our definition of minority insists that the students must practise Sikhism and appears to be a Sikh." Left with no other option, Narula approached the court to get her middle name. “I got 82% marks and wanted to pursue economic honours. With little time at my disposal, I had to introduce a middle name, which I never wanted. Though I got the minority certificate, I decided to study in Dayal Sing College in the same course. I cannot be a part of system where a surname becomes a form of identity," said Narula.
  19. Sarna slams Makkar for ‘slave mindset’ Bathinda, April 24 Parmajit Singh Sarna, president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Managing Committee, today asked SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar to come out of the “slave mindset” and not act as a puppet of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal. He criticised Makkar for his remarks that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was not a Sikh. He regretted Makkar having recently questioned the credentials of Manmohan Singh and his contribution to Punjab. Sarna asked Makkar to have a moral courage and acknowledge the public sentiment that every Sikh felt proud of Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister of the country with a billion-plus population. Sarna, who was campaigning for the Congress candidate Raninder Singh, took exception to Makkar saying that the BJP leader L.K. Advani would always be a better PM than Manmohan Singh. Sarna asked Makkar to read Advani’s autobiography wherein he had proudly claimed that he and his party had put pressure on the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to go for Operation Bluestar. He asked Makkar, “Can a person, who proudly claims to have a role in the destruction of the Akal Takht, be a better PM than a humble Sikh”. Referring to Makkar’s remarks that the PM had done nothing for Punjab, Sarna said Manmohan Singh had announced a special package for the 1984-riot victims, issued special grants for Punjab, announced construction of the Guru Gobind Singh Marg from Talwandi Sabo to Nanded besides many other development projects. He said it was after a long time that the Sikhs had occupied the premier position after Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who had established a Sikh kingdom. “It is after over 160 years that the Sikhs could get an identity in the world with Manmohan Singh becoming the Prime Minister.” He regretted that Makkar despite occupying the august post of the president of the SGPC was not able to come out of the “slave mindset”. Sarna said he was only doing the bidding of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukbir Badal.
  20. Favouring Manmohan, DSGPC backs Cong New Delhi, April 16 The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (DSGPC) on Thursday announced its support for the Congress party and appealed to Sikhs in the country to vote for the party which has declared that Manmohan Singh, a Sikh, will be its prime minister again if it forms government. The DSGPC, the committee governing gurdwaras in the Capital, took the decision at a special meeting attended by over 300 heads and representatives of various gurdwaras in the country at the Rakab Ganj gurdwara here. “We held discussions with members of various gurdwaras across the country and decided to support the Congress as the party for the first time made a Sikh the country’s prime minister. We want Manmohan Singh to get a second term as the prime minister,” said DSGPC president Paramjit Singh Sarna. The DSGPC has also sent a letter of support to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. The party also expressed satisfaction over Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar withdrawing their candidatures for the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. The two are accused of involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
