First of all Baba Nanak obtained the gate of the grace (of Lord) and then He underwent and earned the rigorous discipline( of heart and mind).

He fed himself with sand and swallow-wort and made stones his bedding i.e. he enjoyed poverty too.

He offered hid full devotion and then he was fortunate to have proximity with God.

Baba reached the region of truth wherefrom he received Nam, the storehouse of nine treasures and humility.

In his meditation, Baba found the whole earth burning (with the fire of lust and anger).

Without Guru there is utter darkness and he heard the cries of the common men.

To further understand the people, Guru Nanak donned robes in their manner and preached them to be detached (from the pleasure and pain).

Thus he went out to depurate humanity on earth.

People that are saying that touching meat is bad, last i checked, we were all containers of meat :) People freak out when meat is mentioned, they say we have to stay away from even touch of meat. But, I think we forget that if it was not for the touch of meat, life would cease to exist. (I tried to keep it clean due to kids on this board)

if meat and our skin are same thing then why dnt u cut ur leg and fry it and serve ur family or kill ur kids and eat them? after all they r meat too, why kill somebody's kids? means goat , pig , hen etc....

yea we r maas but the mass which which u get by killing aminals to sell so that people can eat it.. why wud u like to touch that?

I still fail to understand how touching meat, any kind of meat, will effect you in any way at all :umm:

Anyways, this is my last post in this topic. People can and will do what they like, it's their choice. Who am I to tell anyone otherwise.

  6. Both really. I did notice he went off beat a few times, it happens to the best of us :) Just need to be extra careful while playing with kirtan

There's people like me who after learning tabla for a few years tend to notice even when little things go off, which is not a good thing. I wish I could stop doing it but it happens automatically which is a distraction from kirtan.

Tabla should be very clear and crisp as well, but that's just what I think

  7. To extend that a bit further :)

If you have every tried to peel the sugarcane skin, it is not easy. You need strong teeth and even then you need to know how to do it or you don't get to the juicy goodness inside.

Think about all the efforts people put in to get ras from mayavi things.

    - kaami person goes out of their way to get kaam raas. they may spend lots of money and time and effort for this, learn new techniques etc...

    - greedy person goes out of their way to get money and material goods. this will have a negative impact on both their physical and emotional health in long term

Bhagat ji is saying that all these efforts being put in to get rass from maya can be compared to efforts being put in to get to the juicy goodness of a sugarcane. After all that effort one might finally get some rass, but this rass only stays for a short while till we drain all the juice then we must spit out the remains, these remains do leave a non-tasty feeling in your mouth. The same object that gave us rass a few moments ago is now giving a bitter taste. For such small amount of rass we put all this effort to get it.

Bhagat jee says that only if people put half the amount of effort to gain some virtue, their life would change for the better

  10. While reading through the response, the word ਮਿਲੈ stood out for me. I'll put down what came to my mind while reading.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji is talking about how this mind goes into every direction while the physical body does not. Generally, when we think of sangat we only think of physical sangat. There is another type of sangat that we usually do not think about. It's sangat of the sub-consious (the mind). This type of sangat is equally destructive as physical sangat but is much much more subtle.

The word ਮਿਲੈ would mean to receive without [much] effort (I think). If we extend this to the tuk, the meaning "According to the company it keeps, so are the fruits it eats." does not really work because "to receive" and "to keep" have different meanings.

Going back to the mind, lets look at a few examples.

    - if mind goes towards someone it finds beautiful, then you may get kaami thoughts

    - if mind goes towards someone it despises, then you may get angry thoughts

    - if mind goes towards material things, then you may get greedy or experience attachment

    - if mind goes towards it's own "virtues" then you may get egotistical

Sangat of the mind is stressed by bhagat jee. He is saying that look this mind goes to so many places which is in effect doing sangat of whoever is at that place. As the saying goes:

"Watch your thoughts: They become your words.

Watch your words: They become your actions.

Watch your actions: They become your habits.

Watch your habits: They become your character.

Watch your character: It becomes your destiny."

Physical sangat will impact us only if our mind gets involved. After all, it was always about the mind and never about the body. Just as a lotus flower, physically it lives in the dirt but it still manage to spread its fragrance around:

khY nwnku gur prswdI ijnw ilv lwgI iqnI ivcy mwieAw pwieAw ]29]

Says Nanak, by Guru's Grace, those who enshrine love for the Lord find Him, in the midst of Maya. ||29||

  11. It's quite simple, raagi's sing filmi tunes because when they do that people give them more money. Also, I have been told by MANY raagi's that when they do raag kirtan for a while sangat gets up and leave, so they keep shabada sung in raag very short.

I think the problem lies with us, not them. We don't appreciate raags anymore.

PS. not ALL raagi's do kirtan for money, before someone mentions that <_<
