Cousin speaks of deaths at lake

The trio were part of a Sikh martial arts group

The cousin of one of three youths who died in a Lake District beauty spot told how a fun day turned to tragedy.

Harvinder Singh, 15, Tajinder Singh, 21, and Satvir Singh, 17, died in Ullswater on Saturday.

The trio, all from Wolverhampton, were part of a group enjoying a paddle in the water when one slipped and the others tried to rescue him.

Another cousin told how the three were well-loved and well-known in their community and would be deeply missed.

Cumbria Police said the three victims were not closely related, but may have been from the same extended family.

    'Deeply missed'

Harvinder's cousin Simran Singh said the three were part of a Sikh martial arts group that had gone to the Lake District for a "peaceful break".

He said: "On Saturday afternoon after they had done the boating, it was a beautiful day. They felt like going into the lake for a quick paddle and Harvinder, Satvir and Tajinder, all three of them, they went into the lake.

"The water was up to about their chest, they were just having fun playing around just like kids do, and they weren't to know that further on there was an 18ft/20ft drop.

"And Satvir didn't know how to swim and as they got further away from the shore he just panicked and the other two, Harvinder and Tajinder, they kept assuring him, they told him 'don't worry about it'.

"Harvinder on one side was holding him and his cousin Tajinder was holding him on the other side and then they just fell back and dropped."

    Extremely cold

He described his cousin as "lively and inspirational" and said it would be hard without him.

Another of Harvinder's cousins, Aman Singh said they would be deeply missed.

Another 15-year-old boy was pulled to safety in the incident. He was taken to hospital, where his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Those involved in the rescue told of the potential dangers of the lake, where a shallow area drops sharply into deep water and the water is extremely cold.

  2. Satvir Singh was unable to swim but they only went to bathe in the water. The other two took him along and they went with their arms locked. Satvir was in the middle, with Harvinder Singh on one side, and Tajinder Singh on the other.. They had a lot of love for each other. In one area of the lake, theres a 18-20 feet drop. So whilst they were walking, its like the ground just disappeared beneath their feet. They were unable to recover from the slip and tried desperately to save each other - Harvinder and Tajinder were trying to save Satvir from drowning and wouldnt leave him. When their bodies were recovered by the rescue teams, they said they found them at the bottom still with their arms locked with each other...

  3. I knew Harvinder Singh, the youngest of them all, really well. He was a close cousin of mine and this day has just been the hardest we've ever had. Personally, ive never lost someone as close as him, in my life.

These were three from a group of young Singhs from Wolverhampton. They used to study together... laugh together... play together... do gatka together... and you could see that spark in them that you know one day, they will be some of the main ones leading Sikhi.

Harvinder Singh was such an amazing kid. There was so much pyaar there. Even when i was down, he'd know how to lift my spirits back up. He didnt care about what anyone thought of him, he always loved people no matter what.

This evening, a group of about 30 students came - mostly non-GurSikhs - and we all sat together, done some simran and keertan together, done Rehraas Sahib Jee de paath, Ardas and sat together doing veechar and remembering them and the high spirits they always had about them. They were all in tears.

These were three of the most outgoing, lively, honest decent kids that would never ever wish ill on anyone else. They used to talk of being "immortal" - inspired from Immortal Productions albums -... well now Singho, your spirits will forever be immortal...

I love you Hev. :'( God Bless.

  5. hello all

You may remember in april i spoke to you all about my brother who passed away in February. I have tried so hard to take on board the advice that was given, but seriously i can't do this, i feel as though i'm all alone!! I can't talk to my husband as he feels "i should let go and try and get over it" and he can't cope with me crying - can't talk to my parents because i don't want to keep bringing it up for them - the only person i could have spoken to is not even here. My older brother was everything to me, we were there for each other in good times and bad, and i just can't believe that for the worst time of my life he's not here to support me - not a day goes by when i don't wish that it was me rather than him. Everyday when i come to work, my heart sinks when i have to walk past the section of the hospital where he was - my heart beats so fast, sometimes i feel as though me feet just can't move and i can't walk. Everytime i drive and am stuck behind a lorry, i fail to understand how his car could've possibly gone under the lorry, especially with tthe crash bars on every lorry now - and again the question Why is alway on my mind.

I've not had a single day since February 14th where i've not cried for him - I WANT HIM BACK!!!!!!

    Vaheguroo :'(

I pray Maharaj gives me ure share of pain and suffering. pray.gif

  6. Can i just add to that and congratulate the Sikh Federation and Young Sikhs coz i really enjoyed the convention.

Its changed a lot. People babble like i once did that all they ever do is talk and talk and dont do anything. But i think in the past year, its boosted. Its good to see Sikhs being discussed in parliament. I think Rob Marris is a brilliant guy. Hes very well spoken and very fair in his arguments. Top bloke.

In terms of the conference itself... THANK U! At last i didnt have to sit through a whole convention on people bigging each other up all the time, coz thats how i found it in the past. This year, the issues were well addressed and well structured. Could have had more of a turnout i think. There was also no exhibition, unlike previous years. Jago Wale were amazing and in future, definitely need more time

  7. I have it on good authority that there is actually a special helmet being trialled which is being developed for the turban. (here in the uk)

I know its a controversial topic and i dont really have an opinion on it yet until ive seen it myself.

I still wouldnt wear anything over my turban. Maybe some type of turban insert I "might" but that would be a debate with the left and right sides of my brain to decide.

I wouldnt either - kinda does defy the reason as to why we weat a dastaar in the first place. The only problem is law. Whereas we dont mind accepting that if we die because we werent wearing a helmet, the problem is companies dont wanna take the risk.

  8. singhs in clubs just aint right .... its like bin laden being in the white house
    LOL.gifLOL.gif

Haha u say it like it would be impossible... but ... theyve searched everywhere for Bin Laden...... maybe they shouldnt rule the White House out! I mean it is Bush we are talking about innit...

  9. the way i see it is that Baba Deep Singh Jee, fought with his head in his hand to get to the fort. Thats a "miracle" in itself. However, people would laugh at that. I dont think Hindus would laugh at it as much because in their religion, there are many stories resembling such miracles. So tell me, if Baba Deep Singh Jee, can fight... with his head chopped off... why do you find it hard to believe other stories of miracles?

Im not saying this story is not a hoax. But i have faith in God enough to say... it is VERY possible.

I believe 100%... theres no doubt in my mind, truly, that Baba Deep Singh jee could have fought with his head in his hand. When people bash that and say stuff like "oh it was only a cut and some historians exaggerated it", it really annoys me and upsets me. So imagine what you guys here on the forum, bashing and laughing at this, is doing to the true Hindus that worship God the only way they know how because its the only way theyve been taught? if you dont have faith in this, then thats your belief and thats fine - it is good to air your opinions on forums. But i think some people cross the line, because they go one step further and try their very best to try and prove other people wrong and impose their own views on others.

    Forgive my mistakes.

  10. I think you have a valid point Lakha Jee

To be honest, i fall into that trap myself. We should be greeting each other properly rather than "txt talk". "Vaheguru" is such a beautiful word, even to look at and read. I think its just we cant take the extra few seconds to wrigte it in full :

Vaheguru Jee Ka Khalsa. Vaheguru Jee Kee Fateh.

Maybe if people actually did write it in full, then they would think more about what they are to write next, having jap'd Vaheguru twice properly rather than just "vee. jay. kay. kay, vee. jay. kay. eff".

People can write pages of nindiya, hate, chuglee, swears but when it comes to writing the Guru's greeting, we shorten it to VJKK VJKF. Somethings wrong with us really.

Sorry, forgive me if i speak out of line.

  11. VJKK VJKF

Our Gurus went to soo many places, far and wide, to spread The Word.

I remember at our Sikh Socs they had a discussion on whether a member of the society should go take leaflets promoting Sikh Socs at the Student Union bar and the notion was passed.

I agree with u though, that tigerstyle done some real good - i think theyve built on the khalsa revolution here in the UK with Immortal Productions. Its difficult, however, to imagine a Singh going to clubs to DJ. its like i remember this dude DJ Stin dancing around on tv with some kuriya wearing his gol dastaar and full dhaaraa. he was amrit dhaari. No one said nething to him though (as far as i know). He was mixing tunes about sharaab and so forth. At least Tigerstyle are decent in that sense. They have a talent, they use it well in both culture and faith.

A lot of people were anti-shaheedi immortality in the beginning because they believed it was wrong and so forth because it would not help people in Sikhi but just promote "hoody" culture like black people go on about Malcolm X etc. But I reckon its turned out pretty well.

  12. Lol Bass Singh,

you gonna kick off another debate here on whether its ok for amrit dhaari GurSikhs to go dj'ing in clubs!

But yeh they do some good stuff, including enough dharmik tracks. "The Rising" was particularily memorable.

  13. hmmm Bass Jee...

i think there are people on the forum that do listen to non-dharmik, non-Gurbani songs. This is evident in a few discussions we have had in the past.

but Jagga_Jatt jee, we dont promote bhangra etc on here because we believe they have no use for us. They will not get us anywhere. Only naam, Gurbani will get us to our Guru. Not some songs about drinking sharaab like theres no tomorrow.
