  1. can i ask people if you get up at amrit vela, what time do you go to sleep, or how much sleep do you get, do you go to sleep more than once in a day?

not as early as you. :) i've been struggling for my amrit vela for a while now. i usually go to sleep after midnight. :S

  2. Vaheguru ji is Purakh (masculine)

Vaheguru ji's shakti (maya) is feminine

That's just how Vaheguru ji wants it.

And don't fret, we're all jeev-roop ishtri( soul-brides) of Vaheguru, so don't let any boys make you feel inferior :)

someone needs to read "The Feminine Principle in the Sikh Vision of the Transcendent". it will totally change your notion that waheguru is male. :)

  3. ^ jasleen kaur, tarun singh veer was being sarcastic... in case u didnt understand..

and no cell phone is gurmat! all are manmat! (altho i have one...)

um, ya, i got that. hence the joke.

in case YOU didn't understand. :)

  4. My personal experience is that as I grew closer to sikhi, I went further from clubbing, dancing etc. not cz its wrong but it I just don't feel like joining people of dance floor, now I like songs, but they are more like ghazal or more meaningful than latest bhangra songs which are always referring Sharab, Kabab and Shabab :) I think that what gurbani does to you give you calmness

i had the same experience. :)

  5. That's a very strange question. Obviously a Muslim is someone who follows the Quran. The definition of a Muslim given in Gurbani is contrary to that given in the Quran. The Guru's asked Muslims to have mercy towards all but the Quran teaches that a Muslim should hate for the sake of Allah and Allah himself considers non-Muslims to be the worst of animals! There is no way to rationalise what Gurbani says a Muslim should and what the Quran says a Muslim should be. The only way to rationalise it is that the Gurus knew that Islam is deeply flawed, that Mohammed himself was deeply flawed and that the only way to reform Islam was to teach the Muslims to emulate the Gurmukh lifestyle.

that's a very strange answer. have you ever read the quran? i have, and i must have missed the part where allah told people to hate anyone!

in fact, the quran says "when you murder an innocent, you murder the world". that doesn't sound like hate or like it condones terrorism at all to me.

please feel free to support your statements with quotes.

  6. guru ji is always speaking through our heart, as long as we dont let our mind interfere, by remmembering GOd, practicing what gurbani tells us, doing truthful deeds and become one with the heart, we will stay under the hukam.

the hukam is to follow your inner guru not your mind. the hukam is in you all the time, we just need to feel it, understand it and then follow it

guruji also speaks to us through gurbani, through his rehet, and through his khalsa panth.

following the "hukam of your inner guru" to the exclusion of these sounds kind of like manmat.

  7. just read a post something about shouldnt wear a kirpan before amrith.

sorry but i to disagree with that, wearing 5K's before taking amrith gives you better preperation for the path ahead of you.

    guru kirpa.

vaheguru je ka khalsa vaheguru je ke fateh jee khalsa jee

if one is keeping rehet already, then maybe i can see where you're coming from. but if one is committing a bujjar kurehet, i don't think they should be wearing our Guru ji's kirpan.

how do you feel about someone on a powerful mind-altering drug wandering around with Guru ji's kirpan? that's fine with you?

how would you feel if you saw some incident on TV where they said a sikh used a kirpan for something wrong. and NO, i'm NOT SAYING the original poster will do something wrong. i'm saying, if we say that anyone can wear the kirpan, then these incidents will start to happen. an then where will we stand when we try to explain why we have to carry it at school or work or in a court room...

just a thought. do with it what you will.

    Shalok, First Mehl:

There is no Truth in suffering, there is no Truth in comfort. There is no Truth in wandering like animals through the water.

There is no Truth in shaving one's head; there is no Truth is studying the scriptures or wandering in foreign lands.

There is no Truth in trees, plants or stones, in mutilating oneself or suffering in pain.

There is no Truth in binding elephants in chains; there is no Truth in grazing cows.

He alone grants it, whose hands hold spritual perfection; he alone receives it, unto whom it is given.

O Nanak, he alone is blessed with glorious greatness, whose heart is filled with the Word of the Shabad.

God says, all hearts are mine, and I am in all hearts. Who can explain this to one who is confused?

Who can confuse that being, unto whom I have shown the Way?

And who can show the Path to that being whom I have confused since the beginning of time? ||1||

  9. interestingly if you look at the raags in Guru Granth Sahib, there is no raag that is supposed to be sung form 12 am to 3 am - i guess that's when we should be sleeping :p

or doing naam jaap, which as far as i know does not require a raag. :)

  10. I was just wondering is there anyone in Sikhism who people regard to be equivalent to as Christians see the Pope?

    no.

catholics (not all christians), think that the pope is like their "hotline to god". that what he says is god's word. he makes decisions for their whole religion.

we have Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji for that... not a man. so for us God's word is unchanging forever.

for catholics, "god's word" changes to reflect politics or the will of the rich.

  11. i apologize to all of sikhsangat for being 'absurd' ill try to refrain from having conversations about rehit in the future as if we dont agree with jasleen bhenji we are wrong... in fact maybe jasleen bhenji can write a new rehit maryada for us...

thanks veerji, your faith in me is very impressive. however, i fear i do not deserve a single bit of it.

i'll stick to my guru's hukam, i'm no one to write rules for others.

hey, maybe you can write that new maryada. be sure to include which cell phone is gurmat and which is not. :D

  12. Fateh to cyber sangat!

I just want to first of all state that is by NO means daas' opinion, nor does daas condone this, however daas would like to ask some tough questions and put forward some purposefully contentious points for debate.

    This is Part 1

    Females of the Panth

Daas believes that the bibiaan in the panth are perhaps the greatest problem that we sikhs face in modern days...

if this is NOT your opinion, then why post it? obviously it's insulting to singhnia. what does it achieve?

    1) It is 9 times out of 10 the bibian who are lured into converting by the same old methods - when are they going to wake up and realise the truth?! Why do they feel some sort of special attachment to persons of another religion

i'm sorry, but what on earth are you talking about? i've never met any sikh girl that converted to another religion. i have met several girls who converted TO sikhi... where do you get this "9 out of 10" number? looking around the gurdwara, i'd have to disagree with you, there are usually more women present.

2)Daas has heard so many excuses over the years - "i cant stand being in public with hairy legs/ facial hair etc" so i wont go for amrit - this is the very basic one - there are a thousand variations on this, but the basic 'logic' is always the same ...i'm too image concious to follow the path of my guru

obviously someone who isn't ready to offer their head to guru will make many excuses for it. my advice: spend more time with sadh sangat and less time with kusangat.

3)Daas has also heard the thing about singhs not wanting to marry singhniaan with facial hair - daas would say rather than get bitter , ask yourself - who actually lost out? If a bibi has this incident happen - would they rather the so called singh (whose a jackal in the roop of a lion) go along with them, marry them and then quite possibly vent their dislike throughout the marriage?? See it oh bhenay as Maharaj doing MAJOR kirpa on you , saving you from so much future dukh!!

i agree with you, but this is more of a problem with the double standard set by the singhs (wanting waxed/trimmed wives while they whine that no one will marry a sikh with a turban - hypocrits!), rather than something women are doing wrong.

4)The issue of "Punj Piyaareeaan" - daas would suggest that rather than spending priceless breaths that are on loan to us arguing over these pointless issues, increase your jeevan and make yourself a role model to the more impressionable youth coming through - very many of the youth get little inspiration from Bazoorg or even Saakhiaan - even GurBanee unfortunately doesnt inspire the youth - they are directly inspired by the jeevan's of their peers - who in the bibiaan can legitimately held up to give a good example of how to live a gursikhi life

i agree that we should worry more about becoming better sikhs first, but excluding women from amrit sanchar seva is a serious issue that is absolutely anti-gurmat.

i can hold up more Singhnia than i can count as incredible sevadars, leaders, kirtanis, kathavachaks, gatka instructors, sisters, daughters, mothers, friends... there are two big differences between these women and the singhs who are held up as "inspirations" for youth (not speaking against any specific singh, just in general).

first, punjabi culture tends to look to men for leadership, even overlooking women who are able to do the role. this is seen in some communities when looking for amrit sanchar sevadars. this is also evidenced by the fact that punjabi gurdwaras nearly always are completely run by men, have male granthis, have male committees, etc. while if you look at gurdwaras with a non-punjabi population (in many countries of the world), you'll see women are equal, or even more active in these roles than men.

second, women are taught to be more "gupt" about their seva. they don't brag about their accomplishments as much. and so they don't get noticed for their accomplishments as much. and if they don't get noticed, then obviously they won't be big inspirations... unless you're LOOKING to be inspired. THEN you'll see them. :)

myself excluded, i find most singhnia more humble and less likely to step forward, so obviously they won't be seen.

(i, on the other hand, am loud and big headed. :D )

but think about it... behind every successful Singh, is a strong Singhni, supporting him and taking none of the credit. and probably a devout mother, who encouraged him on his path.

read a bit about Bibi Amrarjit Kaur if you want to know how a true Singhni lives. she is the woman i look up to most in this world. :)

ok, i'm off the soap box. for now. :p

  13. real sants include Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindranwale, Sant Maskeen Ji, Kartar Singh Bhindranwale and some others... But who are real sants in todays world?

just a note: Sant Singh Maskeen ji's first name is "Sant". it's not a title. :)

(not that i don't believe he's sant material, he surely was!)

  14. very cool! encourage sis to keep wearing it! :)

I always tell her shaheed stories every night and so and developing her Sikhi now so all of this will be natural. Now she only ties when we go Gurdwara.

when i started wearing dastaar, i only wore it to gurdwara too. then i wore it a couple times a week... then i started wearing it every time i left the house... then i started wearing a dastaar or at least a keski 24x7. :D

but it all started with the trips to gurdwara. :) it sounds like she has a good role model to look up to!

  15. Dear bro, I have heard some really nice things about the Gurdwara Sahib in New Westminster(http://www.sukhsagar.ca/) which shud not be that far from your place. This Gurdwara Sahib is in the hands of sikh youth and they do some really nice parchaar. If I was you, I would certainly visit this Gurdwara and chakk amrit.

I agree. If you contact them I am sure they will arrange for your transportation and help you find Sangat.

Also, for those who have discourages you from taking amrit while on methadone, I would simply reply be stating methadone is being used for medicinal purposes, we have no right to issue a judgment on whether you can or cannot take amrit. However, I highly doubt many would refuse to give amrit to one taking oxycodone or morphine for medicinal purposes, even though they too can produce altered states of mind.

Also, I do not personally see any issue with you wearing your panj kakkars in preparation. If you keep your kes than you can also wear a Kara. I hightly doubt those telling you not to wear a Kara will tell you to remove your kes as well.

However, when it comes down to it the best advice anyone can give you is to consult the Panj Pyairay in your region, discuss with them these issues of wearing kakkars and taking amrit and follow accordingly. Do not be bound by the advice or word of anyone on this forum, instead please contact the Gurdwara Sahib in New Westminster, speak to the Panj Pyairay there and take their word, as the word of the Guru.

i don't think anyone is saying he "can or cannot" take amrit, amrit isn't something we "take", it's something we are blessed with. i think as long as he is honest with panj piyare than it should be fine. but i think it's essential that he be honest with them about his situation.

if there is a 3ho oriented sangat nearby (someone mentioned yoga something...), they might be especially good to talk to about preparing for amrit, as they have a lot more experience with your specific situation than most punjabi sikhs will.

regarding kakkars... no one is saying don't wear a kadha... but a kirpan? there's a lot of responsibility that comes with the kirpan. i've never met anyone who advocates wearing the kirpan before amrit.

  16. rahit is actually constant. it's not changing all the itme.

Although the sgpc SRM, is the newest understanding of rahit. But rahit itself remains the same, as it is given to us by the guru, it does not change just b/c some people think it does. SRM is an understanding of rahit of one large group.

the newest iteration, the srm, was made to create a basic platform to smooth over differences between various groups rahits. In the majority of cases, the differences between rahits of different groups are surprisingly small.

thanks veerji, you make a very valid and important point.

  17. So Amrit Vela is a Vela when the whole Sansaar seems like it doesn't even exist because it's so quiet and peaceful and it's only you and god or the Saadh Sangat, you and god...

    beautiful description. :)

i think midnight-5 is a commonly accepted window for amrit vela. some people lean to the midnight side, others to the 5am side. :) technically i think it's the "hours before dawn", so it might change with the seasons or depending on who you are and where in the world you live.

i wonder when they do amrit vela in alaska in summer when the sun never sets? :gg:

  18. Singh just shout back, "God Bless you" they wont know how to respond.

That's a good way to tackle the situation, also smile at them and remain in Chardi Kala - basically don't give them the satisfaction that they've hit a nerve or discouraged you in any way. . .

agreed totally with the above suggestions! :TH:

it's sad that you're being harassed over bana, but it's not necessarily racism, is it? unfortunately, white sikhs take just as much crap when wearing bana or even just regular punjabi clothes and a dastaar. :kaur:

  19. what about deodorant? if you breath that in it is intoxicating, and its getting rid of Gods gifts, the natural body odour.

as long as it doesn't contain alcohol or animal products you should be fine.

though it's best to make your own in a sarbloh deodorant stick mould. :D

    ummm, whats wrong with alcohol?

the problem is with alcoholic beverages, not the chemical itself

i think u need to do ur reasearch

    tellin me about alcohol

    how old are hmm?!

how much of the world have YOU seen?!

    alcohol lai ke ai...

    hmph

    IT. WAS. A. JOKE.

    that's what the :D means.

let me know if you need me to clarify it further.

  20. U mad head lol! Lmao :LOLz: if we use toilet paper, we are killing the trees, so in essence we are doing antigurmat, because trees also live :p But again Mehtab, you use your right hand dont u! lol

    :o

no no no never use the right hand! right hand for eating, left for that nasty bathroom stuff. even goris know that, it's in all the india tour guides!

    :p
