  1. I dont ask for a private room, i run my hands on my Dastar and after 2 mins all done......Why ask for private room for this ?? Dont be be so whimpish, stand tall Singh and show em that they dont intimidate us !

veerji, i apologize if there was any misunderstanding. My asking for a private room to conduct the screening was in no way a "bow-down" to authority, or any indication that I am being intimidated, or being a wimp. It is simply for the reason that you mentioned in your post. I prefer that the screening not be done in full view of the general public, because, as you state, everyone stares at you as they go by, as if we are terrorists.

I have travelled several times to the US and you do have the option of "patting down " your own Dastar. The only problem is that they make you stand in a secure see through area until an agent is ready for you. Everyone stares at you as they go by, it makes you very uncomfortable , not nice being stared at as if we are terrorists.

The Sikh Coalition are doing a great job , we should all support them.

I don't cause a scene, I don't raise my voice, I don't get upset with the TSA agents, I simply state to them that I will perform the pat-down, but I require a private room for that to take place. No one (other flyers) is the wiser to what is happening.

not 100% true veerji. When I travel in the US, I always ask for a private room to conduct the patdown. Mind you, I don't travel alot, but I can confirm that Miami (MIA) and San Fran (SFO), and a few other smaller airports Buffalo (BUF) etc. have not had a problem with me requesting this. What they do is bring a second agent (as a witness, i guess), and will take you to a second private room, and you can perform the pat down yourself.

I need to experience my Punjab. I have been to Punjab twice in my short lifetime, sadly, the last time was almost 15 years ago.

I am hoping to be able to visit Punjab sooner rather than later, and I am now beginning my research. I would like to focus my trip on Punjab (India and Pakistan), to see the beautiful landscapes, etc. and places of religious significance.

I would be greatful if my fellow sisters and brothers would be kind enough to help me in this regard. If you had 3-6 months to visit, where would you go? The lesser known/visited gems will be given higher priority in my list.

P.S. No disrespect to anyone, but I am NOT interested in visiting anything outside of Punjab, UNLESS it has religious significance.

    Thank You!

  4. for those that are willing to take on a challenge, follow the website (diybookscanner.org) and build a complete scanner. this device holds the book upright in a V shape (not facedown) and is designed to be used with two cameras, one taking a picture of the page on the opposing side.

for someone that will be digitizing numerous books, something like this will save enormous amounts of time, and make the job much easier to complete.

  5. with most/all hosts that provide unlimited, there is always fine print. basically, you get unlimited storage for the websites that you are using, within reason. they will probably not be very happy if you start backing up all your computer hard drives onto the site for example.

realistically, i dont think it should make a difference for you. how much stuff will you possibly host on your site? you may have videos etc. but its not as if you are going to run a site that serves tons of video/audio such as keertan.org or other websites that have gurbani and katha files.

justhost.com should be more than suitable.

  6. i went to local gurdwara and sat on left side and people were staring at me and then i was told left side is for bibis and babas sit on right side. and i thought i was in developed world. things were definitly better in my backward third world pind. but then there is also plenty of male black sheep among us who need to be roasted which is the reason for this kind of segregation.

Veerji, I think your example is not exactly what TejiKaur was referring to. Having men and women sit on different sides is in no way disrespecting either, or saying either is inferior to the other. The "segregation" that you are referring to is to maintain a calm, quite atmosphere in the sangat, and allow one to immerse themselves in the kirtan/gurbani without distraction.

Bhenji (TejiKaur), it is with great embarrassment that I read your story. It is very sad that these thoughts and actions that women are inferior and belong in the kitchen etc. still take place, even after our Guruji has told us that man and women are equal. Please do not let it get you down, and always remain in Chardi Kala spirit.

Please help with the creation of a new sikhi website which will just give info about local events and allow people to listen to the audio from the local events.

As there are so many multimedia websites out there, I was hoping that I could see a basic template/coding which we could build on, therefore saving us time.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Vaheguru

If you want to keep things easy, try something like Joomla. It's an opensource (free) "Content management system". Its pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it, and there are a lot of plugins/extensions that you can use (free and paid) to add additional functionality.

There are extensions that allow you to add videos and pictures etc. really simply to a page, without tons of coding to go along with it.

Many hosting services offer Joomla (or other similar software) that can be installed through the hosting control panel.

A Sikh woman who suffered racial, religious and sexual harassment on the job has obtained justice by standing up to her employer. An amount of more than a quarter million dollars has been awarded to her and eight others.

Sukhbir Kaur's former employer, a privately held discount retailer National Wholesale Liquidators (NWL), which sells home utilities and electronics at discounted and wholesale prices, agreed to make changes to their employment policies and pay damages to nine harassment victims, including Kaur, according to a news release issued by the Sikh Coalition.

''The settlement sends a strong message to private employers that discrimination against the Sikhs is illegal and will be harshly punished,'' the release said. Kaur's lawsuit alleged that in 2004, an NWL store manager harassed her because ''she was a Sikh, a woman and an Indian''. The manager told her to remove her turban because she ''would appear sexier without it.'' When she refused the manager's repeated advances, he told her that she was not permitted to use the bathroom. The NWL failed to take appropriate action to address and correct the harassment, even after Kaur complained. Instead, she was fired.

The issue was first brought to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)'s attention in July 2005, when the Sikh Coalition filed a charge of discrimination on her behalf with the EEOC. The EEOC, subsequently, conducted an investigation and found that many South Asian workers at the NWL in Queens, a New York borough, were being harassed.

respect to our bhenji for fighting for justice! Too many people let things like this slide.
