  1. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was strongly opposed to the caste system which was entrenched in Hindu society and Religion. One of the Hindu vedic creation hymns mentions that Brahmins are superior, as coming from God's head, the warrior caste from his arms, the farmer caste from his thighs and a menial from his feet. (sikhism does not believe in this)

Even in the Bhagavad Gita, Krisnas first words to Arjuna refer to the caste system. Arjuna is urged not to yield to an ignoble manliness which is unworthy of an warrior. A few verses later this is amplified, " For the warrior caste there exists no greater god than a war enjoyed by duty". Whatever may have been the origin of the caste system it has come to have the strong religious sanctions behind it.

Guru Nanak taught that all souls originated from the same source and was Guru Nanak's strongest logic against the caste system which had been prevailing in India. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's straight forward teachings of Humilty, Service and Truthful living and mediation eventually became known as Sikhism.

The fatherhood of God anfd the brotherhood of Man is the main theme of Guru Nanak's teachngs.

You are my mother and Father,

    we are your children

You have favoured us with our being and body

No one knows the limits of your Glory

In your grace lie our many comforts

It is difficult to believe that a God who is both loving and poerful, would make any discrimination among his people. Such discriminations are made by man to serve his own selfish puposes.

Guru Nanak restored woman to her rightful place in Indian society and regarded her as man's companion on the spiritual plane. Why call her low who gives birth to Kings and prophets like Krisna, Moses, Christ, Mohammed, Buddha and others

According to Guru Nanak, the grace of God may come to the scholar or the unlettered, the high or the low, the rich or the poor.It does not depend on caste, knowledge, wisdom or penance. Those who seek it through love, service and humility attain the goal of life.

"In your mercy lies my peace,

Nanak always prays for your grace

Guru Nanak who strove for religious tolerance and universal brotherhood sums up his view in the following hymn

    No one is my enemy

    No one is a foreigner

With aa I am at peace

    God within us renders us,

    Incapable of Hate and prejudice

Without dedication and love, man is like an empty shell that crumbles into dust.Love transforms self-cented look to one of self-sacrifice

He who has not known love

Nor the beatitude of the Beloved

Is like a guest visiting an empty house

He departs dissapointed as He came

  2. As fragrance dwells in a flower,

    And reflection in a mirror;

So does God dwell in every soul"

Guru Nanak Dev Jitaught that the Soul is quite distinct from the mind and the gross matter of the body .When a person dies, the body reaches its destination, becoming dust with the dust of the physical universe.

However, the soul has a different goal. It does not die with the physical body but loses it's present personality and depending on the individuals Karmas, (good or bad future resulting from ones own actions) is either reborn as a new personality or merges with the Ultimate Spiritual Reality or God.; which is the source and destination of our spiritual being. According to Guru Nanak, the Physical universe is the origin and destiny of our body, so is God the the Spiritual Universe, the source and goal of our individual spirit and soul.God is envisaged by Guru Nanak as the Spiritual Universe, who created the Physical Universe.According to Guru Nanak, God himself is as as vast and infinite as the physical universe. It is that Spiritual Infinite in which He sees God, the Spiritual Reality.

Man is a miniature specimen of Physical and Spiritual Universes. Components of thes body become dust with that of the Physical universe and the Soul is identified with that of Spiritual universe. The macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm of the human being.GUru Nanak,

"Such is the divine play of the Creator that

He has reflected the whole cosmos in the Human Body".

There are cases whee between death and rebirth, some souls may wander for some indefinite periods depending upon their past actions or karmas. In this connection, there have been some incidents of malpractices or strange and unexplained ocurences influenced by the so-called spiritualists. These feats can be considered as witchcraft or sorcery. These so called miracle workers practising the cult of Tantric Yoga have utilised their knowledge and energy in an attempt to develop occult powers, usually for enslaving wandering or strayed spirits in order to motivate them to do certain tasks or get some information by devious methods including that of fortune telling. Many of their admiresr are amazed by such feats of spirit communication and often call them miracles. Sometimes, these spiritualists seek te help of such enslaved spirits for implementing dangerous tasks or wicked transgression to impress others or to frightem them into subjection.

  10. A Glimpse of the life of Sant Baba Aya Singh Ji Hoti Mardan wale.

    Birth and childhood

Sant Aya Singh Ji was born in 1855 A.D. In village Shamo Zaii, Dist.Peshawar.His father was called Rame Shah and his mother was ChattraKaur. Both of them died when Sant Ji was a child.

Sant Ji visited Hoti Mardan for the first time with the sangat from Peshawar. He was twelve years of age at the time.

Sant Aya Singh Ji succeeds Sant Baba Karam Singh Ji Hoti Mardan Wale

We have already heard as to how Sant Baba Karam Singh Ji welcomed the young Sant Aya Singh when He came to the dera. Sant Aya Singh had no attachment with worldly affairs from his childhood. He was very fond of religious matters. After He came to the Dera, He used to render all kinds of services, such as service in the free kitchen, cleaning of utensils etc. His mind was ever attached with God. He did not talk much. After Baba Karam Singh Ji used to go to the Gufa at about 10am in the day, Sant Aya Singh Ji used to go to some lonely place for engaging himself in meditation. In due course, occultand supernatural powers came to serve him; but He did not care about these. He rose higher and higher on the spiritual path.Baba Karam Singh Ji knew the internal state of Sant aya Singh Ji and so conferred his divine seat upon him and uttered various prophecies regarding his future.

    Daily Programme

Sant Aya Singh Ji followed the same religious ways which were shown to him by Sant Karam Singh Ji.He used to take a little food food in the night. After taking a short rest for about two hours, he would get himself completely absorbed in deep meditation in the Gufa.

Sometimes He would go to the stream and stand there for hours in deep meditation and would return to the Gufa before dawn.

The devotees used to bring him in in the palanquin to the Dera after sunrise. Before going to the Gurdwara He would again take bath with one hundred and one metal pitchers full of water. The devotees used to take as much as possible the water which flowed from his body and not a single drop was left behind. Then He would go to the Gurdwara.

Baba Ji had already taken baptism of the double edged sword. H e. like his master, would never sit on any specially prepared seat in the sangat. He would sit like an ordinary person.

He did not talk much.Different prayers of the devotees according to their mental attitude were fulfilled. Very few prayed for the gift of the divine name.

He directed the devotees suffering from different diseases to take bath in the same way as laid down by Sant Karam Singh Ji.

He used to sit in the sangat for two hours. Then He would return to the Gufa and would take a little food. After a little rest, He would again absorb himself in deep meditation.

He got built a bigger hall of the Gurdwara and other constructions with Pucca or baked bricks.

The number of devotees increased and the sepoys of the Regiment also took keen interest in making improvements.

    The Enmity of the Pathans

As in the days of Sant Karam Singh Ji Hoti Mardan Ji, the Pathans gain tried to cause harm to the Dera and wanted to cause injuries to Sant Aya Singh Ji but they miserably failed. They were amazed to find supernatural figures riding horses standing on guard. They were convinced that Sant Aya Singh Ji was a true saint. They left their nefarious activities.

    The Raja of Kashmir came

The raja of Kashmir again came to pay respects to Sant Baba Aya Singh Ji. He offered very valuable diamonds etc but Sant Ji refused to accept anything, saying that “These are the blood of thepoor persons”. He then offered a beautiful horse to Sant Ji and wanted him to ride it. Sant Ji complied with this request and rode the horse for a short while in his presence. The Pathans wanted to steal this horse but were unsuccessful.

Sant Ji bestows the gift of naam upon many

Sant Baba Aya Singh Ji used to preach that everything will remain here and only the true wealth of the name will last forever,, so collect it and finally reach the palace of God (Sachkhand). Many deserving devotees followed these sermons and obtained the name.Even some Muslims begged for this gift and Sant Ji bestowed this upon them.

He used to declare, as instructed by Gurbani, that “misuse of occult powers must be condemned. This will take the false saints who do so, to hell.

Big true saints created by Sant Aya Singh ji include, Sant Jwala Singh ji of Harkhowal who was a soldier in the army. Sant Jwala Singh Ji preached the Sikh religion and the Brotherhood of man. He established his dera in village Harkhowal, Disst Hoshiarpur which still flourishes.

Sant Harnam Singh Ji of village Kahar also got the gift of Naam from Sant Aya Singh Ji, SantHari Singh Rumalan Wale got spiritual power from Sant Harnaam Singh Ji.They constructed many historicaal Gurdwaras such as Gurdwara Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib.Sant Aya Singh jI conferred his grace on some more saints, these include Sant Jawand Singh Ji of Raja Sansi, Sant Thakur Singh Ji of dist. Jullundhur, Sant Thaman Singh of dist.Amritsar, Sant Natha Singh of Reru Sahib, Patiala and many more.

    Sant Ji visited Hardwar

On the occasion of Kumbh mela, Sant Aya Singh Ji went to Hardwar along with his selected devotees. Sant Ji was already known as a great saint. Many sadhus etc who were gathered in Hardwar came to pay respect to Sant Ji. The sangat of Hardwar including sants and others who had already received Sant Aya Singh JI at Hardwar with honours had made very comfortable and nice arrangements for his stay.Soecial sittings were made where Guru Granth Sahib Ji was seated with great respect. Sant Ji did not talk much, yet He conferred grace on many by giving brief yet effective religious instructions. Many true devotees got peace of mind.Sant Ji came back after some days and met Sant Attar Singh Ji at Dera Sahib. Sant Aya Singh Ji visited Sri Anandpur Sahib, Sri Amritsar Sahib before returning to Hoti Mardan.

Sant Aya Singh Ji merges with the Supreme soul.

Sant Ji declared that He would leave for God's home(Sachkhand)very soon. Many devotees came to the dera on hearing this. There were great crowds. On the 28th AsuSambat 1975(A.D.1918)Sant Ji lay down and covered himself with a white sheet and in an instant lrft this world.

Before doing so, He declared that there was none who had merit to succeed him and none was appointed by him as his successor.

The body of Sant Ji was taken to River Attock in a beautiful built box as in the case of Sant Karam Singh Ji.Huge crowds of devotees followed singing Gurbani Shabad Kirtan.

The box was submerged in the river Attock after the Ardass and other necessary ceremonies.

  11. to cross it.They remained sitting there in the hope that the water would fall. This happened only when it was dawn and so it was useless for them to go with the palanquin at day time to fulfil their scheme of abduction.

They were now convinced of the great spiritual powers of Baba Ji and startded paying homage to Baba Ji in order to get their wishes fulfilled together with peace and happiness for their families.

THE CHILD AYA SINGH COMES TO THE DERA

Once the Sangat from Peshawar came to pay their respects to Baba Ji together with the child Aya Singh. They requested that Baba Ji kept the child Aya Singh at the Dera.To which ,Baba Ji agreed and replied, "He will succeed me".

THE ROUTINE PROGRAMME, SERMONS AND SOME EVENTS.

The true life of a True saint is beyond human wisdom. None can describe his Supreme state of merger with the Supreme Soul even while alive. But few glimpses of what one can narrate according to his worldy wisdom must be detailed.

The true life of Baba Ji is beyond human wisdom.None can describe his Supreme state of Merger with the Supreme Soul even while alive. But a few glimpses of what one can narate according to our worldy wisdom must be written.

Sant Baba Ji possessed the below qualities and many more beyond our comprehension.

Baba Ji never showed any miracles.

However, Baba was protected by the Lord Almighty and divine help could be seen on many occasions.

    Baba Ji's words were fulfilled

baba Ji did not curse anyone

His divine eyes made vanish ills aNd diseases of the devotees.

Baba Ji like the True saints totally forgot and left " I amness".His firm belief was that God and Satguru is all owerful and that He was their most humble servant. He proclaimed, " I am nothing, O' Almighty Lord and Guru Nanak, you are everything and all powerul. I am only a most humble slave".

Baba Ji conferred the gift of the Divine Name on the deserving ones. Those who wanted wealth, got their desires fulfiled.

Baba ji was completely beyond the grips of mammon or maya.

Baba Ji did not like at all his self-praise or worship in any form whatsover.

If someone made any offerings, Baba i did not touch them but left them where they were lying.

Once, the Ruler of Kashmir, Raja Amar Singh came to make humble respects to Baba Ji as He was suffering from a serious and incurable sore.He place some fruits and a large amount of costly things before Baba Ji and narrated his painful sufferings. Baba Ji replied;" Why have you bought these?" The Raja relied"These are for the Langar". Baba Ji replied "The Langar is of the sangat and the Guru. The devotees themselves bring everything for the same. We do not need your gifts. Baba Ji returned the same to the Raja. The Raja also prayed that the gift of some land for the Langar. Baba Ji refused this also.Baba Ji threw his merciful look on the Raja and uttered that the Satguru will relieve you of your pain. These words were fulfilled and the Raja was completely cured.

Baba Ji turned evil persons into vrtuous devotees

People suffering from cold, fever, paralysis etc used to come to Baba Ji. Baba Ji observed," Take bath in the stream and eat curd". This was followed and strangely enough the disease vanished.

All the sincere devotees were asked by Baba Ji to meditate on God and thé Guru and recite Gurbani or do Japji Sahib,or Sukhmani Sahib, or the word Waheguu.

Baba Ji used to come from the Gufa to the Dera in a palanquin and used to go back in the same. Ganda Mal, a devotee used to take part in carrying the palanquin. One day, Baba Ji took pity on him and directed him to go to his village to establish a shop.He was further directed to go on reciting Sukhmani Sahib. Now He was very glad and went to his village and complied with the directions of Baba Ji.In due course, He beacame very rich.

Baba Ji went to the house of some devotees who had prepared langar for all.Sometimes, the devotees became afraid on seeing large numbers of sikhs who accompanied Baba Jim, lest the Langar becomes insufficient. Baba Ji observed, " Don't worry.Cover the food with a sheet.Utter satnam and everything will be OK.

Once in the house of one devotee,Nagina Singh, more and more sikhs began pouring in. Nagina Singh was proud that He had collected sufficient material for the Langar.Baba Ji enquired from Nagina Sing as to who was the owner of the langar.Nagina singh used to think that He was the owner of the Langar.Nagina Singh was told by Baba Ji to declare that the Langar was provided by the Guru.Nagina Singh complied with this direction and his worry regarding the insufficiency of the Langar vanished. However, He thought that the material collected for the Langar would be insufficient for the whole sangat. Baba Ji went to the store room and pointing towarda a bag enquired what did it contain. The reply was, "Sir, it contains barley."Baba Ji observed, "Now, open it". When the bag was opened, it now contained rice of the best quality.

Mant times the devotees of Baba Ji residing far off used to remember him and to pray to him to fulffill their wishes. The wishes were duly fulfilled.

Once a rich man, Chandu Lall and his servant while on a business trip were surrounded by thieves in a deserted jungle. He prayed to Baba Ji for his help. Soon the thieves found that a fully armed Sikh was coming to teach them a lesson. They then fled away.

Baba Ji used to be brought in a palanquin from Gufa to the Dera. On reaching the Dera He used to take bath again. A copper pitcher full of water was used by the sangat to pour water slowly on the body of Baba Ji. This was done for a hundred and one times. The holy water flowing from his body was distributed by the sadhsangat for removal of their ailments and ills etc. Not a single drop was allowed to go to waste.

Sometimes, when a new person visited Baba Ji and the Dera, He would want to test Baba Ji to see whether He was a true saint or not..He would say in his mind that If Baba Ji called him by his name, He would become his devotee.Baba Ji used to call that person without his asking.Such events happened in the case of other true saints also. The object was not to show his spiritual powers but to change the person concerned into a firm believer of the Sikh religion.Thee are several instances of similat tests in Baba Ji's lifetime.

Many devotees prayed to Baba Ji for the gift of naam and did not want any worldly things. This was conferred by Baba Ji upon the deserving devotee.Bhai Lal Singh, the first devoted sevadar spent his life in the dera even after getting his pension. He was converted into asaint by Baba Ji. Similarly, Sant Attar Singh Ji of Reru Sahib, Sant Nagina singh, Sant Harnam Singh, and sant Dyal Singh reached the highest spiritual status through the grace of Baba Ji.

It was natural that many people became jealous of Baba Ji and would talk ill of him. Baba Ji did not care at all about this.Such persons used to suffer many ills due to their sinful deedsWhen they used to come to Baba Ji, they begged for his mercy and wanted to be excused,Baba Ji would observe, "I have done no harm to you.My master(the omnipotent)Supreme being might have done sometning without my asking. Please repeat his name and beg pardon from him.He will excuse you. Thus such persons were put on the true path.Once a sepoy of the Regiment came to make some request on behalf of an English officer.Baba Ji refused to comply with his wishes. He became angry and said disrespectful words.Baba Ji did not say anything and remained calm. That sepoy soon became ill.His mind was now unhinged. The illness became serious in a few days. Some of the sepoys who used to come to the Dera and had great respect for Baba Ji, prayed to him to relieve the sepoy of his illness. The reply of Baba Ji was as usual, "I have no grievance. But it is for the Supreme being to excuse him. His end would come soon and after his death he will be dealt with him as He likes. He should go on remembering, Waheguru.

Baba Ji merges with the Supreme Soul.

Many days before Baba Ji's journey to Sachkhand was to begin, Baba Ji announced that He would be leaving this world. He gave a sacred turban to Bhai Aya Singh and told the sangat." He would serve you all with even more zeal". His spiritual status will be very great. He then conferred his love and mercy on all the devotees.

Now Baba Ji was to go to village SaiduHe sat in the palanquin which was carried by the sangat. He passed through Mardan and Akora.

On reaching Saidu, Baba Ji stayed for twelve days in the abode of Mai Devki. He was to leave this world on the twelfth day. Large numbers of devotees flocked to the place.Baba Ji uttered, "Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa;Waheguru Ji Fateh", to the entire sangat. Then he laid down and covered himself with a white cotton sheet. In a moment, His soul left his body and merged in the Supreme Soul.

    Baba Ji's last rites.

Baba jI had already giiven instructions that his body should be put in a box and the box should be submerged in the Attock river. In compliance with this, a beautiful wooden box was made. Velvet cloth was spread in it. Then the sacred body of Baba Ji was put in it. Other necessary Sikh rites were performed. Then the box was taken by the devotees to the river Attock which was at a distance of five miles from that place. The sangat recited divine hymns. Flowers wrere showered on the way. On reaching the river, the final prayer or Ardass and other necessary Sikh rites werte performed. The box was then taken in the midstream and was respectfully placed there. The sacred body of the great saint soon disappeared. This happened in the year 1902.A>D. (samvat Bikrami 1959 on the ninth Magh vadi day)

A big dera was erected at the village Saidu in the memory of the great saint and large crows celebrated the the anniversary each year with great fervour.

  12. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SRI HAZOOR SANT BABA KARAM SINGH JI HOTI MARDAN WALE MAHAPURSH

    Birth and Childhood

Baba Karam Singh Ji was born in 1828 at village Kazipur, District Rawalpindi(now in Pakistan). Bhai Kirpa Singh, of a thorough spiritual nauture, was his father.Bibi Subi Kaur was his mother.

From early childhood, Baba Ji would sit aloof and did not talk much.He did not mix with other children. He was taught Gurmukhi and Gurbani by his father. He took very keen interest in Gurbani from his very childhood.

Baba Ji joins the Sikh Army.

When Baba Ji was 16 years old, he joined the Sikh Army maintained by the Government of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. When the Punjab was captured by the British rulers, they established a cantonment at Hoti Mardan. A regiment called the “Guide Regiment” was posted at Hoti Mardan. Baba Ji joined this regiment. The truthful life of Baba Ji influenced the officers of this regiment and soon he was promoted as Pay Havaldar. Baba Ji, with his saintly habits won the respect of all.He used to help the needy as much as he could and was fond of rendering honorary services to all.

    Bhai Lal Singh.

When Bhai Lal Singh, a devoted follower of Baba Karam Singh Ji Hoti Mardan wale during the time Baba Karam Singh Ji Hoti Mardan wale left service, came to Hoti Mardan and wanted to join this regiment. It was necessary for him to get a “verification certificatewhich He could not procure. So he became very dejected and wanted to return back. Baba Ji met him when he was going back and encouraged him, assuring him that the needful identification would be given by him.Baba Ji brought Bhai Lal Singh back and got him enrolled in his Regeiment after the necessary identification etc, was provided. This Bhai Lal Singh served Baba Ji as his most sincere sevadar till his last breath.

Baba ji gave protection to a rich muslim family.

After the Mutiny of 1857 was over and the Britishers had again established their losing position, the “Guide Regiment was ordered to go to delhi. After Delhi was captured, according to the then prevailing custom, the soldiers were allowed to loot Delhi, which was captured with their help. The whole city was mercilessly looted. Baba ji did not take part in this. While he was standing outside the house of a rich muslim lady, she entreated Baba Ji to save her and her family.Baba Ji as usual was ever ready to help such persons. He assured the lady that no harm would come to her and that He would stand there and keep watch and see that none entered the house.Baba Ji remained there till the evening. When the looting of Delhi came to an end, the lady with her family members opened the door and brought Baba ji inside her house. She brought a big tray full of diamonds and gold mohars etc and respectfully offered these to Baba Ji by way of expressing thanks.Baba Ji smiled at this and observed, “It is my religious duty to save the helpless.I do not want anything. You may pray to God that I may obtain His and my Satguru's Grace”.So saying He left the house.

    Baba Ji's restraint from maya

Many soilders of Baba Ji's village came with rich booty and their families were happy to receive the same. However, as Baba Ji had brought nothing, so his mother observed,”Why have you not brought riches from Delhi?”Baba Ji replied “ It is against my religion to rob others. I find that your love is for mammon or maya.I shall do what my Satguru directs me to do”.Baba Ji left the house and again came to his regiment. He never went his house and became a True Servant of the Satguru. His firm belief was that only God and Satguru were True relations and worldly relations are selfish and creations of Maya (mammon) became more firm.

The Daily Religious Routine at Hoti Mardan.

Now Baba Ji returned to his Regiment. He spent the entire time after his official duties in reciting Gurbani and remembrance of the Satguru. He continuously spent this time all alone in meditation. He used to get up very early morning. He would go to the nearby stream, take bath and sit on its bank.He would first recite Sukhmani Sahib and other divine hymns of daily routine. His spiritual status became higher day by day.Sometimes, He used to come late to his Regiment, as He used to forget everything except God and the Satguru while sitting in meditation. Slowly His fame asa a spiritual and saintly person spread and even his officers began to treat him with respect.

    Some Miraculous Happenings.

Accoerding to Gurbani, supernatural powers do serve the saints. This happened in the case of Sant Baba Karam Singh Ji of Hoti Mardan without his wishes or his asking. These supernatarul powers automatically seved him and his humble servants. Many strange phenomena were seen by the officers and soldiers etc. One day a complaint was was made against him by a Sepoy to the Colonel of the Regiment that Baba ji was not present on his duty. The Colonel came and found Baba Ji attending his duty.In fact Baba Ji did not come to attend it and remained absorbed in meditation for a long time. In his absence God and Satguru had maintained the honour of Baba Ji. This happened due to Divine Grace.

Satguru Gobind Singh Ji attended the parade in place of Baba Ji.

Once a very Senior Military Officer had to come to make special inspection of this Regiment. A big Parade of the entire Regiment was arranged in his honour.Baba Ji took such unusual time in devotion and meditation, while He was at the stream, He entirely forgot about this parade and remained silent.

Now the parade took place.Every soldier and officer took part in it.But what about Baba Ji?In his place, a heavely brilliant figuru just like Baba Karam Singh Ji stood on duty at the parade. The Uniform of Sant Karam Singh Ji was more beauitiful than the others. His parade was excellent. The officer, who came from Lahaoore was amazed and was so much aatracted that He at once ordered immediate promotion of Baba Ji.

    Baba Ji leaves the Regiment.

When Baba Ji came back, He was thinking that some punishment would be awarded to him for remaining absent from duty on such an important parade day. He met other sepoys of the Regiment. They congratulated him on his special promotion. He heard the whole story and was so much affected that he became totally silent. At once He saw Satguru Gobind Singh Ji and was convinced that the Satguru came and joined the parade in his place. He was now determined to leave service and to continuously serve the true master throughout his life. He met the Colonel and told him that he would not serve him and would leave the regiment. He gave his resignation.Despite a good lot of of persuation by the Colonel and assurances that more privileges would be given to him, he wanted to leave the job.

Under Divine inspiration, Baba Ji observed, “ See your register, my name is not there”.The roll was sent for and the Colonel was amazed that Baba Ji's name was not there. He was also afraid that some unnatural phenomena had happened. He was forced to accept the resignation. He and the other soilders requested Baba to take hie residence near the cantonment so that they might get his grace by often meeting him.

LONG AND UNUSUAL MEDIATATION AND DEVOTION TO THE SATGURU AND GOD

Now Baba Ji began residing in an underground room(Gufa) made by him specially for remaining attached in deep spiritual meditation. This Gufa was situated near Kalpani Stream running through small hillocks, not very far off from the cantonment.Baba JI's daily programme was to remain in deep meditation, reciting the mool mantar, the fundamental spell given at the beginning of Sri Jap JI Sahib.During night, He would remain standing in the water of the strwam, fully engaged in recitation of Divine Hymns. Bhai Lal Singh, Sepoy, who has been referred to above used to bring food for Baba Ji ansd serve him as his humble servant.

In a short time, the divine powers appeared to serve Baba Ji but He did not want these. His sole aim was to merge with the Satguru and the Supreme Being during his lifetime. It was natural that Baba Ji's fame as a True saint spread all over.People used to come over to meet him to enjoy his sight. On the request of the Sangat Baba Ji with reluctance agreed that four or five kacha rooms be built for giving shelter to them.Baba Ji ordered that burnt bricks mus not be used. One room was built for Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. In this way the Dera of baba Ji at Hoti Mardan came into existence..He continuously resided here, except on one occasion when He visited Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar and remained there for some months.

He would, at the request of sincere devotees, visit their places on the occasion of the Akhand Paaths.

    The Free Kitchen

Now a Langar or free kitchen was established.Food used to be served twenty four hoours a day.The food was of the best quality.

Baba Ji was so kind that many personssuffering from incurable diseases were cured with his divine glance.Food for Baba Ji was taken to the Gufa at noon.Baba Ji used to take on his palm one ot two loaves of bread and would return the remaining for mixing it with the Langar. He delared that half eaten food be should not mixed with the Langar but only pure food should be mixed.

    ENMITY OF THE PATHANS

The Pathans of the area became jealous and wanted to cause harm to Baba J and the Dera. Once a Pathan held a sword at night time in an attempt to injure Baba Ji.The arm of the Pathan stiffened and He could not move.He made several attempts but He found that Baba Ji was protected by supernatural powers. This was followed by several attempts by other Pathans, Hoever, they were unsuccessful as each time they found that Baba Ji was surrounded by figures in white robes.Baba Ji was always protected by the Almighty and satguru.

The Pathans made a plan to abduct Baba Ji and carru him in a palanquin to the territory beyond the rule of Britishers. This group started to carry out the nefarious job. However, they began quarrelling with each other as to how the ransom money was to be distributed amongst them. They fought and caused injuries to one another on this question.

Such attempts always faled.Once the Pathans wanted to cross the stream to reach the Gufa of Baba Ji.The water level was very low, but in no time it rose very high and it became impossible for them

  14. THe wound inflicted upon Guru Ji by the Pathans was now showing signs of speedy healing but Guru Ji's wound reopened on the 6th october 1708 as Guru Ji threaded a large bow presented to him and this was as followed by a surge of blood.Guru Ji realised that all attempts to restitch the wound were now futile as Guru Ji was nearing the time to end his physical form.

Nearing his earthly existence, Guru Gobind Singh Ji called an assembly of Sikhs and declared that Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji would be the Living Guru eternal of the Sikhs and that Sikhs should seek guidance from Sri Guru granth Sahib Ji.Guru Gobind Singh Ji did chaur over Guru Granth Sahib Ji and bowed before Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

One of Guru Ji's poets, Poet Senapati gives an eyewitness account of the declaration by Guru Gobind Singh Ji that the Khalsa or assembly of Sikhswould be the Guru hereafter and all duties would be bestowed upon the Khalsa. The Sikhs then requested Guru Ji , althoughyou have declared hhe Khalsa as your physical form , where does your soul lie? Guru Ji replied that the Divine word or shabad Guru found in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji would be the everlasting Guru.Guru Ji replied that the Sikh community would be guided by the decisions of the Panj pyares or Five Beloved ones thereafter.

Guru Ji then uttered the famous dohra which Sikhs repeat after the ardass:

"As ordained by the Lord Eternal

A new way of life is evolved,

    All the Sikhs are requested

To accept the Holy Granth as the Guru

Guru Granth Sahib Ji should be accepted as the Living Guru

Those who wish to meet God,

will find him in the Shabad contained in the Guru Granth Sahib

SRI MUKHBAK SRi Guru Gobind Singh Ji

Bhai Nand Lal Goya, a poet in the court of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, once asked Guru Ji about his forms. GUriu Ji told Bhai Nand Lal Ji that He has three forms: I have one form which is invisible but all pervading; a second form which is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji; a third form which resembles a Sikh who abides by the teachings enshrined in Sahib Sri Guru Grnth Sahib Ji.

According to Khushwaquat Rai, Guru Gobind Singh Ji dressed himself in Akai blue clothes and tied around his waist a yellow Kamarkassa and tied a tall plumed turban and put on it a plume.Guru Ji displayed all his weapons and adorned himself with an array of weapomns.Guru Ji adorned himself with a bow . In his right hand, Guru Ji held a spear and mounted a blue horse.

It is popular belief that Guru Gobind Singh Ji returned to his eternal home in physical form, alike the first spiritual master Guru Nanak DEv Ji.

On the midnight of 7th October 1708 Guru Gobind Singh Ji ordered an assembly of Sikhs and took leave from this mortal wiorld by uttering 2Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa;Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh".

  15. The Dasam Granth Sahib Ji is the second most revered scripture of the Sikhs after the Aad Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji which contains the writings of the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Saingh Ji. Three of the banis recited during the Amrit Sanchar or baptism of a Sikh are taken from the Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji and a a baptised Sikh must recite these three Baniis daily as part of his nitnem.Namely, Jaap Sahib, tva prasaad swaiyee sravagh sudh smooh sidhaan wale and the bentee chaupaee kabiyo baach are contained in the Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji. Most traditional schools of thoughtwhich include the Nihang Singhs, Damdami Taksaal, Udasis and the Sikh rehat Maryada accepts the Sri Dasam Granth as being the work of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.However, the more modern schools of thought such as the Missionary colleges only see portions of the sacred Granth as being authentic.

A standardised bir of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji contains 1428 pages and contains the collection of writings by the Tenth master. These inclclude, Sri Jaap Sahib, Akaal Ustat or praise of the Creator, the Bachittar Natak or Wonderful DRama in which Guru Gobind Singh ji giveas an account of his previous birth, his clan, his parentage and the descriptions of the Battles in which Guru Ji has been involved.

Then follow three translations of the DEvi Charitar, which are translations of the Devi Mahatamya, an episode in the Markandeya Puran in praise of the Goddess Durga or Goddess of War(Chandi Charitras 1, Chandi Charitra 11, and Chandi Ki Waar)

Then follows the Gian Parbodh or awakening of knowledge, Chaubis avataar, axccounts of the 24 incarnations of Vishnu according to the hidus, Brahmavtar , Rudaravtar selected because of their war like characters. The Shabad Hazare;33 saiyes in praise of the Almighty and rejecting idolatory and hypocrisy, the Khalsa Mehima or words in praise of the Khalsa; the Shastar Nam Mala; a list of the weapons used in the Guru's time, with special reference to the attributes of the Creator God, the tria charittar illustrating the qualities but principally the deceit of women; the kabiobach bentee chaupaee which will resolve the suffering or fear of the person who will even once repeat this bani. THe Zafarnama containing the tenth Guru's letter of victory to the Emperor Aurangzeb and Hikayats, several metrical tales in persian

The Dasam Granth Sahib was compiled by Bhai Mani Singh Ji Shaheed , a companion and close disciple of GUru Gobind Singh Ji after Guru Jis demise. It is believed that Bhai Mani Singh Ji spent nine years on this task by getting copies of Banis from other disciples

There are many copies of the Sri Dasam Granth Sahib in circulation but there are three main well known editions,. One ascribed to Shaheed Bhai ani Singh Ji, volumes at Sri Patna Sahib and Sangrur wali Bir.

  17. Guru Gobind Singh Ji' childhood and Guru Ji's Kautaks

Guru Gobind Singh Ji infused such heroic spirit into the children of Patna who were so downtrodden that they were forced to bow before the Nawabs., Soldiers and Kings but now they would talk jokingly with them. Many tried to frighten these children but who could frighten those who lived alongside the fearless saint soldier Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Many came to fear the soldierly activities of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and complained to his father Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji. In reply, the ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji replied that Gobind Rai has done is all good. You must not bow before royal soldiers.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji's mother got made for Guru Ji, two gold bracelets. One of which Guru Ji threw into the River Ganges. When Guru Ji's Mata Ji enquired about the Gold bracelets Guru Ji took his mother to the very spot on the River Ganges where He had thrown the two bracelets and threw the other at the same spot exclaiming why worry about worldly things. Guru Gobind Singh Ji sacrificed everything for our welfare and set a prime example for us.

Fateh Chand Maini Gotr was a Jagirdar..He was respectfully known as Raja Fateh Chand Maini. He had a large garden, which the Guru would often visit along with other children. At first, Fateh Chand Maini Gotr's wife would reprimand children passing her palace but she soon became fond of the Guru's radiant face. S he longed for a child like Guru Gobind Rai. One day the child Guru and his accomplices entered her palace and Guru Ji sat in her lap requesting her to serve them with whatever food she had prepared. The Rani asked Guru Gobind Rai Ji to request whichever dish He preferred. The child Guru requested boiled chick peas to be served, ironically this was the very dish which was ready. She dished out chick peas to the guru and his child accomplices. From that day onwards, she would serve boiled chickpeas together with milk and puris to Guru Gobind Singh ji
