Would Downing Street have pulled out pork scratchings and wine at an event for Muslims? I'm sure they are aware of the Muslims sentiments. We're just lame at expressing ours.
Very true...

Sikh Council UK advised Downing Street that such an event should be alcohol free and vegetarian. Indeed, I saw no alcohol there but I saw lots of people drinking apple juice from wine glasses.
I have just had it confirmed to me that there was alcohol at the event and there were complaints lodged on the day about this.

UNITED SIKHS have confirmed that they handed the prime minister a memo in regards to the Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana case at the event.

We also had a similar issue here in Leicester. There is a large annual event organised by a self appointed Sikh leader in conjunction with the county council called the “Guru Nanak Annual Lecture 2011”. A few of our members heard of the event and decided to go listen to the lecture. And surprise surprise, the first thing they are offered when they walk in was alcohol. The so called Sikh leader even came up to them after the lecture and said “come on boys let’s have a glassy”.
We have since been in touch with the county council, the councils main inter-faith body and the self appointed Sikh leader to ensure that this kind of practice does not take place again within any event (associated to the Sikh faith) organised by the council. They have agreed.
The truth of the matter is that the self appointed Sikh leader was only able to establish his position as the mainstream Sikh institutions had left an empty vacuum when it came to local council and government bodies engagement. If we leave vacuums, then unscrupulous characters will fill them.

Cutting through the News-speak
Time Magazine's 2011 Person of the Year was not an individual but 'The Protester' ( http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2101745_2102132,00.html), an acknowledgement of the ,at times, sweeping, and ,at others, bloody Arab Spring which has seen major change in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. It seems that 2012 is going to be no different with the ongoing conflict in Syria, and now it looks like the people's need for justice and dignity is reaching closer to home - our beloved Punjab.
As with all these conflicts, propaganda is rife.
There are already examples of this in the mainstream media (Western and Indian) making out Sikhs as terrorists for protesting against Sardar Balwant Singh Rajoana’s death penalty set for 31st March. In the Indian media Sikhs are being described as ‘radicals’ (unfortunately this is not a recent thing), while in the mainstream western media the tool often used is ‘omission’ of the background and context to understand the issues, effectively forcing viewers or readers to form a shallow and often misinformed view.
Two attempts to rebalance address this mainstream view are linked below:
An excellent article with background to the case and sources:
