  1. How can they not discuss the most important part of the process; which is to deliver scriptures. Sri Akal Takht yet to discuss norms for transporting religious scriptures Amritsar, Punjab - Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has said the issue of formulating guidelines for transportation of religious scriptures will come up for discussion at the next meeting of the Sikh clergy. His statement has come in the aftermath of an incident in which Satkar Committee members had stopped a consignment of religious books of a local publisher while objecting to the way it was being transported to Rajasthan. Time to act The issue will come up for discussion at the next meeting of the Sikh clergy Satkar Committee members had recently stopped a consignment of religious books objecting to the way it was being transported Earlier, measures were taken to ensure that no sacrilege is committed in either publishing or transporting Guru Granth Sahib But there are no clear guidelines for the transportation of other religious books containing gurbani The jathedar said the issue had been deliberated in the past and some resolutions too were passed, but it needed to be reviewed in the present context. While the Akal Takht and SGPC have initiated various measures to ensure that no sacrilege is committed in either publishing or transporting Guru Granth Sahib, there are no clear guidelines for the transportation of “gutkas” containing gurbani and other religious books having contents from gurbani. The Akal Takht had issued a “hukumnama” (edict) on May 9, 1998, directing that the SGPC had sole rights for printing “birs” of Guru Granth Sahib in order to prevent “blasphemous” acts of private publishers. The edict issued by Akal Takht made it clear that only the SGPC, Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee or any other publisher, with the permission of Akal Takht, could publish the holy book. As far as transportation is concerned, the SGPC had in the past sent “birs” of Guru Granth Sahib abroad on chartered flights. In April last year, the SGPC even sent 450 “birs” of Guru Granth Sahib to Italy by ship. The “birs” were first sent to Mumbai in a special AC bus and later the same bus was boarded in a special cabin in the passenger section of the ship. All these efforts were made to maintain “maryada” while transporting the holy book in view of the incidents like a private publisher reportedly ferrying “birs” of Guru Granth Sahib in a goods train. http://thesikhwire.com/2012/10/sri-akal-takht-yet-to-discuss-norms-for-transporting-religious-scriptures/

  3. End of the road for Manpreet Singh Badal? Chandigarh, Punjab - People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Singh Badal on Wednesday faced a revolt from his closest comrades, who accused him of pocketing at least Rs 3 crore collected as party funds in foreign countries before the January 30 assembly elections. “We demand a white paper from Manpreet on the money (Rs 3 crore) he collected in the party’s name during his visits abroad (particularly the US and Canada),” said Arunjot Sodhi, a founder member of the PPP, at a press conference here. Accompanied by PPP leaders Bharat Bhushan Thapar and Kulwant Lohgarh, Sodhi also announced the party’s “general house” meeting on November 16. Claiming that “90 % of the 150 founder members and the central committee members” had resentment against the PPP president, Sodhi demanded the white paper from Manpreet by November 16. Sodhi also alleged that Manpreet was looking forward to joining the Congress. The other allegations levelled against the PPP president include the deployment of 26 gunmen of the Punjab Police on the premises of his family members, fraudulently floating non-governmental organisation (NGO) SuBeRa and passing it off as a project to help his son get admission in a US-based educational institution, and the selection of PPP candidates for the assembly polls in an “undemocratic” manner. When contacted, Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s nephew Abhay Sandhu, another of Manpreet’s close associates, justified Wednesday’s press conference by Sodhi, saying that the PPP president was accountable to the party and should reply to the points raised by the rebels. http://thesikhwire.com/2012/11/end-of-the-road-for-manpreet-singh-badal/
  4. Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab - Bhai Lal Ji, the 17 th- generation direct descendant of Bhai Mardana, the devoted companion of Guru Nanak Dev, is fighting for his life in a hospital in Lahore after he suffered a heart attack last week. Formally known as Ashiq Ali Bhai Lal, 83, he was admitted to the hospital four days ago and is in the intensive care unit (ICU). His condition is said to have deteriorated before he was hospitalised, as his poor family could not pay for proper treatment from time to time. Bhai Mardana Kirtan Society from Ferozepur in the Indian Punjab had sent some money. When a wheelchair-bound Bhai Lal Ji last visited India in the last week of April to attend a function held by a Punjabi newspaper, he had told this correspondent that he wanted to get treatment in India where better facilities are available. He had also expressed the wish to recite Gurbani in the Golden Temple one last time. He had once sung at the Darbar Sahib in Amritsar after Partition in 1962. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) had, however, politely refused permission because of Rehat Maryada (Sikh code of conduct), saying that only baptised Sikhs could perform kirtan inside the sanctum sanctorum. http://thesikhwire.com/2012/11/bhai-mardana-jis-descendent-in-lahore-hospital-icu/
