  1. Just a question to the sangat regarding the Hukunama from the Akal Takht on removing chairs and table from all langar halls. When Baba Ranjit Singh Ji came to the UK recently, Sedgley St Gurdwara in Wolverhampton moved their langar hall into a tent to accommodate the larger number of sangat attending. The langar was instead moved to a temporary tent. This tent contained only table and chairs for langar? My question is, is it ok to disobey the Hukumnama temporarily for such programmes?

  2. Darn... we must stop them soon... now they are helping to protect the environment around Harmandir Sahib too!!!!

Sri Darbar Saheb parkarma turns green

In an attempt to beautify the interior and surroundings of the holiest Sikh shrine, the SGPC with the help of Baba Jagtar Singh of kar sewa wale, today launched a drive to turn the parkarma of Golden Temple green that would be instrumental in saving the shrine from vehicle corrosion.

Most of the plants, which were planted today, have been mentioned in Gurbani. The joint initiative of Mr Roop Singh, manager Darbar Sahib, Baba Amrik Singh and Mr Jaswinder Singh, advocate, a member of SGPC, more than 3000 plants of 51 varieties were planted. The drive to green the parikarma was inaugurated by Bhai Gurbachan Singh, Head Granthi, Golden Temple, and Baba Jagtar Singh. Earlier, a prayer was performed to launch the drive.

Mr Roop Singh said that he and Baba Jagtar Singh had visited a number of nurseries of the country to select the plants. Herbal plants were also being planted, he said.

Earlier, Dr Enamul Haque of Bangladesh, who was instrumental in recommending reports on various heritage sites, including Hampi in Karnataka, had also provided useful inputs for the beautification of the Golden Temple.

During his visit to the holy city last year he had felt the need to replicate the guidelines presently in operation around the Taj Mahal in Agra. Professor Haque had also pointed out that the government must ban the use of vehicles around the Golden Temple complex. He had also suggested that only battery-operated, eco-friendly vehicles be allowed in the area. This would save the Golden Temple from pollutants emitted by vehicles. These pollutants could cause damage to the marble and the gold plating of the shrine. He had pointed out that the Galliara Project should have lot of green spaces to help beautify and save the shrine from the corrosion due to large-scale movement of vehicles.

  3. Kurta **** Ji,

    *******

No meat, drinking, smoking has or ever was allowed at Wolverhampton. You may be confusing this with other mela's

I agree there is a problem with the youth on Dudley Rd etc. The point I'm trying to make is that there is more good than bad at the mela for Sikhi.

If some idiots want to block Dudley Rd then that is up to them, this is nothing to do with the people organising the event. Most of these idiots are from down South anyhows. This year the Sikh Council has been instructed by the police that anyone who honks there horn or attempts to block a road will be arrested. So I hope the police backup this statement with action.

People devote a lot of their personal time to this function. Youth who have never entered a Gurdwara attend here so if we can reach out to them here and bring them into Sikhi is this not worth a try?

Instead of putting the Mela down we should be getting more involved so that we can educate our youth in Sikhi. Do you have any other ideas on how to make it better?

What I do know about the funds is that every year they struggle to raise enough money for the Nagar Kirtan/Mela. I will ask for a full audit of accounts for this years event and post it here. If you want more then feel free to attend the next Council Meeting. Contact me for further info.

Seriously if anyone has any ideas on how to make this a better event for Sikhi then please reply and get involved yourselves.

  4. That's funny, as there is no meat allowed in the mela the smell must be coming from *****

The Nagar Kirtan/Mela is organised by sewadar, the funding never covers the total cost and many people put money in from their own pockets.

If you think the Sikhi Tent is not a good idea do you have any better ones to bring Sikhi outside of the 4 walls of our Gurdwara's?

You're quick to out down the sewa that goes on but do you have any better ideas? If you think you can do this better please contact me and I will personnally take you to the next Council Meeting to see how you can make a difference.

This is a problem with our Sikhi, when someone takes a step to do something for our religion there are 10 people (also our Sikh's) doing the opposite.

  5. A question for the sangat...

Should any books containing gurbani translated into english or other languages be made available to the public in UK library's? Or should they be kept in our gurdwaras? If the latter then how do we spread the teachings of Sikhism to non-Sikhs or our third/forth generation of sikhs whose 1st language is English?

  6. This month we have a exceptional ragi Bhai Sarabjit Singh (hazoori ragi sri darbar sahib) with us in the UK. This week he is in the Midlands and to be honest I was expecting coverage in Ektaone.com as per normal. However nothing so far? Is this due to the changes at Ektaone.com and will the new sewadars not be taking photos and recordings of such brilliants raagis?

  7. The times at Nanaksar Thath on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are 8-9pm. Also on these days 11 CD's of Bhai Satvinder Singh's UK diwans will be available if anyone requires them (including full Asa Di Vaar).

Along with Bhai Satvinder Singh Ji's CD's there will also be CD's from other famous ragi jatha's including Bhai Davinder Singh Sodhi, Bhai Niranjan Singh (Jawaddi Kala Wale), Sant Anoop Singh (Una Sahib wale) and Baba Ranjit Singh (Dhandrian Wale) who have performed Kirtan at Nanaksar Thath, Wolverhampton this year.

This is a part of a new initiative by sewadar to promote Kirtan. All CD's will be priced at £1 each. All money raised will be used for similar kirtan projects in the future

Bhai Satvinder Singh is also at Oldbury Gurdwara (Amrit Parchar Dharmik Dewan) followed by Kirtan in West Bromich (Domelli) on Sunday morning/afternoon.
