  1. Sikh jatha to leave for Wagah today AMRITSAR: A jatha of Sikh pilgrims will be crossing over to Pakistan via Wagah land route on Friday to observe the martyrdom day of fifth Sikh guru Guru Arjun Dev, which falls on June 16 as per the Nanakshashi Calendar. The jatha will include 100, 60 and 20 devotees sponsored by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and International Bhai Mardana Yadgar Kirtan Darbar Society, respectively. The jatha, which will return on June 22, is five days behind the schedule given by the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) from June 8 to 17. Savinder Singh Sabharwal, an SGPC member from Patiala, will lead SGPC-sponsored pilgrims, while DSGMC Balbir Singh will lead the Sikh pilgrims from Delhi. Bhai Mardana Yadgar Society president Harpal Singh Bhullar will also accompany the jatha. The home ministry has authorised the SGPC as the sole coordinating agency for the jatha. The SGPC is still adamant on not giving recognition to the PSGPC, while the DSGMC and Bhai Mardana Yadgar Society have already accepted the PSGPC as a representative body. This time again SGPC leaders would not accept siropas from PSGPC authorities, though the other two Sikh bodies would have no hesitation in doing so. SGPC secretary Harbeant Singh said, "There is no question of accepting siropas from the PSGPC. We don't even recognise it." Harvinder Singh Sarna of the DSGMC said they saw nothing wrong in accepting siropas from the PSGPC, which had done a lot to develop gurdwaras in Pakistan. Bhullar said that the devotees sponsored by his societ y would be gifting Urdu-Punjabi dictionaries in Pakistan. The jatha is likely to be delayed because the Pakistani authorities have not issued visas so far.

  5. Panchkula, June 10 The Sindoor in her hair has not been washed away as yet. But her steely gaze, acquired when she refused to succumb to social pressure and marry with a handsome dowry, speaks volumes about this self-respecting potrait of womanhood. Nineteen-year-old Shweta Bansal, who hails from a traditional Baniya family in a non- descript town near Hisar, refused to be treated as a commodity by her prospective in- laws. She broke off her engagement to the son of a Haryana government official on the night of June 8 here, when her in- laws demanded Rs. 8 lakh in cash, besides other gifts as dowry. Though brought up with the traditional mores of most semi-urban homes, where the woman’s world is confined to the four walls of her home, the girl could not take the “insult.” In a fit of rage, she walked upto her fiance and threw away the shagun and gold ornaments presented by the boy’s family. “I realised that he could not stand up for me. His family was ridiculing my parents, grandfather and brothers, calling us paupers and commenting on my looks, while he stood a mere spectator. He even had the cheek to walk up to me and ask me to coerce my family to agree to the dowry demand. I decided that a woman had to respect herself, only then could she command respect in society, “ says this BA Final Year student, who has never heard of women’s emancipation and feminism. Nor has she heard of Noida girl, Nisha, who had created waves by turning her prospective husband to the police when the boy’s family raised their dowry demands. Talking to TNS , she said she had always been taught to obey her elders and till date had let elder family members decide her life’s cours e. “ I want to study, but girls in our family are destined to have only a basic education and are married off at an early age. I was okay with the marriage and like any other girl my age had begun weaving my own dreams. But what happened on the night of June 8, shook me out of my reverie, and I decided to stand up for myself and my family’s honour,” she said. Narrating the sequence of events, her brother, Mukesh Bansal, said that the marriage proposal had been accepted by their grandfather and no one questioned his choice. “ We had an informal meeting at my elder brother’s house in Mani Majra on June 8 and the proposal was accepted by both sides. They then asked us to arrange for the maang bharna ceremony the same evening. However, they (the prospective groom’s family) began throwing tantrums right after the maang bharna (where the prospective in-laws put sindoor in the girl’s hair for formally accepting the marriage proposal). After the ceremony was complete, they put forth the demand before my grandfather.” But it was only after Shweta threw away their gifts and refused to get married that her family decided to call off the engagement. A formal complaint was made to the district police chief, Mr. Ranbir S. Sharma yesterday, but the two sides decided not to go ahead with the FIR , though the engagement has now officially been called off.
  6. SGPC to press for summoning CM to Takht AMRITSAR: The demand for summoning Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh to Akal Takht for the alleged failure of his government to prevent the clashes in Talhan is likely to gain momentum during the SGPC executive committee meeting scheduled to be held at Kalgidhar Niwas, Chandigarh, on June 12. SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar has already demanded Amarinder’s resignation on the issue. The SGPC general house has passed a resolution, urging the Akal Takht jathedar to summon Amarinder Singh to Akal Takht and hold him responsible for the alleged entry of the police into the Golden Temple complex during the SGPC elections last year. SGPC executive members, who seem to have made up their mind to take on the Congress, are likely to target Amarinder in their next meeting, which in turn will give a boost to the sagging morale of the SAD. SGPC sources said that deliberations were on in SAD circles to use the authority of the Akal Takht jathedar to summon Amarinder. Partap Singh Advocate, an SGPC executive member from Jalandhar, told Times News Network over telephone that the Congress government had totally failed to contain the violence. He alleged that the party was promoting forces inimical to peace. Advocate, who is also one of the seven members of the sub-committee formed by the SGPC to probe into the incident, said that the probe report would be tabled at the SGPC executive committee meeting. Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, another SGPC executive member, said the government should probe into the Talhan violence so that such incidents do not occur in future. Prof Jodh Singh, editor-in-chief, Encyclopaedia of Sikhism, said that both the Punjab government and the SGPC were responsible for the clashes in Talhan. "If the administration was lax in checking the incidents, the SGPC, which failed to put across the message of Sikhism where there is no place for casteism, is equally to blame," he said.
