PATNA Sahib, Bihar, India (February 20, 2015)—The apex Sikh body, SGPC, has taken over the control of Takht Sri Patna Sahib management. The 15 member committee elected 5 members and Avtar Makkar was named as head of the management committee unanimously.

The SGPC enjoys control over majority of Gurdwaras in Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pardesh. Now with the control of Takht Sri Patna Sahib, it can make decisions regarding 4 of the 5 takhts. The fifth takht, Sri Hazoor Sahib, is run independently of SGPC control.

SGPC President was congratulated by DSGMC President Manjit Singh GK. Some scholars have hinted that Makkar had been made head at Takht Sri Patna Sahib to empty the president’s position at SGPC headquarters in Sri Amritsar.

GURDASPUR, Punjab (July 25, 2014)—In a press statement, the SGPC President Avtar Makkar has condemned the incident at Gurdwara Miri Piri Patshahi Chhevin, located on the Sri Hargobindpur Talwara road. His statement came after a volume of Siri Guru Granth Sahib was severely damaged after a fire incident at the Gurdwara which was caused by a short circuit. The incident took place at 10 AM, shortly after the Sikh Sangat had left the morning services.
Makkar alleged that from time to time, the SGPC publishes notifications in the newspapers, asking Gurdwara sevadars to ensure proper electric wiring in Gurdwaras, to ensure there are no incidents of short-circuits. Sikh24 has reported multiple such incidents, in which Siri Guru Granth Sahib ji’s volumes have been left with severe damage.
The local Sikh Sangat is however suspicious over the incident, and have asked for an in-depth inquiry. It has been alleged that there was no electricity in the Gurdwara when the incident took place, further, only the bed in the sukhasan room was left burnt.

On July 23, 1989, Punjab Police officers abducted, tortured, and unlawfully killed 35-year old Sikh community leader Kuljit Singh Dhatt. For 25 years, his family has relentlessly pursued justice, attending over a hundred hearings, petitioning various courts and commissions, and enduring police harassment and intimidation of witnesses. On May 9, 2014, a judge convicted three police officers of abduction in order to murder Kuljit Singh Dhatt, sentencing them to a mere five years. The legal battle continues, now in the higher courts.
