Last weekend, Sikh Channel were advertising a discussion programme broadcasting 8th August 2010 @ 8.00 regarding this case. Nothing appears in today's listing apart from a Badal v Sarna discussion show. Any ideas what is happening with the previously advertised show?

Maidas Nirmali dera sect head shot dead in Punjab

HOSHIARPUR: Unidentified assailants Sunday shot dead the head of Maidas Nirmali dera (sect) at village Baddon in this Punjab district, police said.
"After the morning prayer inside the dera hall, Sant Pardhan Singh went out to open the main gate. Some three-four persons were already standing outside the gate and they immediately fired at him," said Amrik Singh, a resident of Baddon village.
"Before fleeing from the spot, they also fired at the tyres of the car parked outside the gate so that nobody could chase them. Pardhan Singh received four bullet injuries," he added.
The local people immediately took Pardhan Singh to a civil hospital in Phagwara but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. He was residing in Baddon village for the last many years.
Police have registered a case against unidentified men.
"Police have found four empty shells of AK 47 bullets. We cannot ignore the role of personal enmity behind this incident," said Rajesh Aggarwal, senior superintendent of police, Hoshiarpur.

On another note, is there even such thing as a replica shastar? I would have thought shastar are shastar full stop. Although you can have fake puratan though.

Baba Tarlok Singh does excellent katha in a simple and effective manner. When asked how will the Panth unite he responded that only when the Panth realises that Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh will unity be achieved. Can't get more simple than that. The Panth belongs to Waheguru but is being hijacked by groups who think that their ways are right. Until they realise the Panth doesn't belong to them, we will not see the victory (fateh).

Convenient of him to remember his 'sikh blood' now. Where was that same 'sikh blood' in November 1984? The real blood of Sikhs was soaking the streets of Delhi and numerous other places in India whist Amitabh the PC was busy congratulating Rajiv on his actions. Don't worry Amitabh, the Courts are unlikely to do anything to Sajjan Kumar let alone you.....so you can sell your lockets on ebay.

FATEHGARH SAHIB: Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan wants to pay homage at Golden Temple, Amritsar. Bachchan expressed this desire on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com. Bachchan recently posted his views on his blog , Abhishek shoots Bingo in the Holy City of Amritsar and his sister Shweta joins him to pay homage and prayer at the Harmandir Saheb.
I wish I could do the same, but am unable to.
Soon however I shall find the time. Or as they say in such situations, when the time comes He will call you and providence shall make the right moves and ways to permit us to do so. The Sikh blood in me beckons and I must honor it. It is rather strange, but in the last few months, my attraction and interest towards my Sikh links, attain some prominence and I feel drawn towards it. Two lockets of Guru Nanak ji, Sacche Padsha, are constant on my neck - one a gift from Guddi Behenji my cousin, daughter of my Mothers elder sister Gobind Masi ji and the other I found as a gift to me that was lying on my desk unnoticed. Now they both adorn my neck. Raj Kanwar, one of Abhisheks early directors had presented me with a photograph of all the Guru jis and they now are with me at my place of worship. I seek blessings from them each morning - Sat Naam Wahe Guru , I recite, as I touch their images and a strange sense of fulfillment and strength consumes me.
Faith has such immense propensities. It draws one in unbelievable directions and then in one fell stroke disciplines you, in belief and in divinity. That moment of divinity remains with you forever.
It never leaves you. Its umbilical cord attached to our system almost till eternity. We rely on it, seek from it strength and prosperity and fulfillment. What we seek really is in fact within us, strong and of immense magnitude. We merely need that little push to set us going. He then, in many diverse versions enters our systems, and quietly and in all modesty, begins to affect our lives and our existence.
It is therefore our faith and belief that then becomes bigger and larger than any thing else. We are ready then to take on whatever comes our way - good bad indifferent !
Good is good ! The other two perhaps bad and indifferent …
But not quite as indifferent as other occasions …
So in order that I do not propagate, what really should be an individual opinion, act, decision should be from within from your own …
It may be mentioned here that Amitabh mother late Teji Bachchan, belonged to a Sikh family.

High alert in Punjab and Haryana after violence by followers of dera Sacha Sauda

CHANDIGARH: The governments of Punjab and Haryana on Saturday announced high alert following wide spread violence acrosss two states by the followers of dera Sacha Sauda.
The followers of dera Sacha Sauda Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh started after CBI registered a fresh case of murder against the dera chief. Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh is already facing four cases of rape and murder.
The followers of Sacha Sauda dera burnt government property and attacked members of other community. The situation is tense in Moga. Bathinda, Ferozepur, Mansa in Punjab and Hissar, Ambakla and Sirsa in Haryana. The dera followers have burnt atleast six buses in Hissar, several shops in Sirsa beside heavy damage to public property in Bathinda and Ferozepur.
The protesters set afire a compartment each of the Ferozepur-Ludhiana Sutlej Express and two local passenger trains in Punjab, a northern railway spokesman said.
They also vandalised railway property at Tapa, Moga and Kalaiyat in Punjab, he said.
The protesters torched six roadways buses in Moga and stoned and damaged vehicles at Bathinda, Mansa, Talwandi Sabo and Bhagapurana in Punjab and at Kaithal, Sirsa and Fatehabad in Haryana. In Kaithal, the unidentified bikers set on fire four buses on national highway 65. At Narwana also, few persons set on fire a Haryana Roadways Bus. Bus passengers were asked to vacate the bus before the incident.
Last week, the CBI had booked Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for the murder of sect Manager Faqir Chand in 1991.
The sect head also faces three other cases, including one of sexual exploitation and two of murder of another sect Manager and a Sirsa-based journalist.
Both Punjab and Haryana Governments have issued orders to contain the violence. Deptuy Chief Minister Sukhbir SIngh Badal Saturday directed law enforcing agencies in the state to deal firmly with anyone trying to take law into his own hands and to ensure that no one was allowed to diturb the hard-earned atmosphere of peace and communal harmony in the state.
"Anyone trying to indulge in acts of lawlessness or violence or tryng to play up communal passions will have to face the consequences under the strictest provisipons of the law. "Let there be no confusion in anyone's mind: no one willbe allowed to get away with lawless acts. Peace and communal harmony will be maintained at all costs, " said the Deputy Chief Minister .
In a statement here, Sukhbir Singh , who also holds the Home Portfolio, said that there was no justification whatsoever for indulging in protests other than peaceful. "There is no place for violence in a democratic society, and the Punjab government is fully alive to its obligation to the people of Punjab in this regard. "
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupender Singh Hooda said that in view of the sporadic incidents of damage to iGovernment property in some parts of the State by anti-social elements today, he had issued stern instructions to all the district Superintendents of Police to deal with such elements with a firm hand.
Hooda also urged the people to maintain calm and not to play in the hands of vested interests who were trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the State and making vain attempts to hamper the pace of development.
The Chief Minister said that an alert has been sounded and vigil was being maintained. He made it clear that nobody would be allowed to take law in one’s own hands.

Nihang factions reach compromise

After remaining at loggerheads for nearly three years, the two factions of the Nihang sect Baba Budha Dal today reached a compromise.
One of the factions led by Baba Joginder Singh extended its unconditional support to the other group headed by Baba Balbir Singh, the legal heir of the Baba Budha Dal. A formal announcement in this regard was made after a meeting of both the factions at Patiala Budha Dal Bagichi here. The decision to call truce by the two warring factions has given the district police a sigh of relief.
Notably, in April 2007, Baba Santa Singh formally announced Balbir as his legal heir of 96 Crori Shiromani Panth Akali Baba Budha Dal, headed by Baba Santa Singh. Subsequently, four relatives of Balbir were allegedly gunned down by the rival group led by Udey Singh and Surjit Singh. The main reason behind the fight was that Udey and Surjit were perturbed with Balbir’s installation as the heir of Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal (Panjwan Takht) by Baba Santa Singh. After the clash, Uday went underground. Thereafter, Joginder Singh, who was backing Uday, had allegedly tried to eliminate Balbir on more than one occasion but failed.
In today’s meeting, Joginder said he is extremely disturbed as one of the Budha Dal follower Lakhbir Singh was murdered mercilessly by the followers of Uday, earlier this month in New Delhi. “Because of the said incident, I myself called up Balbir to offer my support and end all the differences,” he told The Tribune.
After the meeting, Balbir said he welcomed all the Nihangs, who want to apologise for their misconduct. He further said on coming March 1, they would celebrate Hola Mohalla in Anandpur Sahib, while giving a call that anyone interested in joining their Dal can approach them during the Hola Mohalla celebrations.

We havent got any other visual media outlets apart from the Sikh Channel at present whereas the Indian sponsored channels actively support and give airtime to anti-Sikh parcharaks such as darshan das on aastha (the same channel that broadcast jhoota sauda in india) and narakhdharis on sunrise channel (the group responsible for death of bhai fauja singh and other sikhs in 1978). Yet our community seems to tolerate these channels but slate the channel which supports Sikhi and not the views of its owner. Furthermore the judgement relates to a different business and not the channel itself.
Agreed the quality of Sikh Channel programmes isn't exactly brilliant but the content largely is. Until the channel becomes more established and can pay at market rates, i doubt programming professionals will be sending their CVs in. Also non-sikh programming professionals are unlikely to join a channel on a religion they know nothing or little about.
Maybe those on the fence could give the channel a chance, and those who dont like the channel or the owner, switch over to something else.

I don't see what relevance this has to the channel. If people don't like the owner, don't want to contribute or simply don't like the channel, theres always the option to select the turn off button on the remote or don't contribute.
We've been after a Sikhi channel for years, and when we get it, it's our own community trying to destory it. The Law Society decision could possibly be a indication of the owners character but in the absence of anyone else, i'd rather have him at the helm than the narakdhari supporters at sunrise, the darshan dass supporters at aastha or major sandhu et al at matv.

Huddersfield shopkeeper killed by teenage robbers

A shopkeeper has been killed in a robbery by a gang of teenagers at his store in Huddersfield.
Gurmail Singh, 63, suffered a head injury during the attack at Cowcliffe Convenience Store in Cowcliffe Hill Road, Cowcliffe, on Saturday night.
He died at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in the early hours of the morning.
Detectives say the robbers, who were aged in their late teens, fled after a struggle with passers-by who had tried to stop them leaving the shop.
"This was a group of six people who heard a commotion at the shop and went to help," a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said.
"None of them was injured during the incident."
Family man
The offenders, who were wearing dark hooded tops and tracksuit bottoms, escaped with a small amount of cash, cigarettes and confectionery, police said.
Det Supt David Pervin, who is leading the investigation, said: "Mr Singh was a well-known and popular local businessman who had been in this area many years.
"I appeal for anyone with information to contact us as a matter of urgency."
Mr Singh was "a family man with two adult sons", police added.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Monday to determine the exact cause of death.

Huddersfield Homicide Appeal

Police are appealling for witnesses to a convenience store robbery in which a shopkeeper died.
At about 8.30pm last night (Saturday, February 20, 2010) members of the public saw what appeared to be a robbery taking place at Cowcliffe Convenience Store, Cowcliffe Hill Road, Cowcliffe, Huddersfield.
The witnesses tried to block the door to stop the offenders leaving but after a struggle they made their escape. Police attended and inside found the injured shopkeeper, Mr Gurmail Singh, 63.
Mr Singh was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he died at 3.30am this morning as a result of a head injury. A small amount of cash, cigarettes and confectionery were stolen.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to ring 0845 6060606 and ask for Huddersfield Police Helpdesk.
The robbers are described as 4 men in their late teens wearing dark hooded tops and tracksuit bottoms.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent David Pervin said:
"Mr Singh was a well known and popular local businessman who had been in this area many years. I appeal for anyone with information to contact us as a matter of urgency."

Clash between Sikhs, dera followers averted

Timely intervention by the district administration averted a clash between Dera Sacha Sauda followers and Sikhs at Shah Satnam Chowk (Danewala Chowk) on the outskirt of Malout yesterday evening.
Tension gripped the town when Dera Sacha Sauda followers objected to a religious programme of Sikhs, led by Baljeet Singh Daduwal, scheduled for late evening at Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib in Danewala village .
Hundreds of dera followers assembled at the chowk located on National Highway-10 and started raising slogans against Baljeet Singh Daduwal, as they did not want him to join the congregation.
They were accusing Daduwal of hurting their religious sentiments by uttering unpleasant words for their sect. Furious at dera followers, Sikhs also started expressing their annoyance.
To douse the tension, various senior police and civil officials, including the DIG, Ferozepur range, the Muktsar SSP, the Malout DSP , Gidderbaha DSP, Muktsar DC and the Malout SDM, reached the spot.
Besides deploying a large number of police men, senior police officials kept on negotiating with the dera followers, who were threatening to call thousands of their fellows, if Baljeet Singh Daduwal took part in the congregation.
After hours-long efforts, the administration took the dera followers into confidence saying there would be no utterance against their sect and Daduwal would not come. Only then did they leave the spot.
However, Daduwal, who was firm on attending the event, reportedly got nod from the district administration and reached the gurdwara late at night and attended the congregation, which concluded around 1.30 am in the morning.
Muktsar DC Varun Roojam said, “Tension erupted among Sikhs and dera followers, but everything passed off peacefully.”

Already under fire from other Ravidassia sants over its announcement of founding a new religion, Dera Sachkhand Ballan now faces rumblings of dissent from within its fold.
Sant Surinder Dass Kathar Wale, the next in hierarchy to head Sant Niranjan Dass, told TOI at the dera’s branch in village Kooper Dhepur Adda Kathar, on Saturday, “I don’t agree with what is going on and I have boycotted all this.’’
Stressing that such issues can’t be decided in a hurry, he said broader consultations, seminars, debates and discussions should have been held with various sections and intellectuals of the community before taking such a big step.
What is happening is not what Sant Ramanad, whose killing in a Ravidass Temple in Vienna triggered the reaction, preached and practised. This (severing ties with Guru Granth Sahib) is certainly not what he would have liked, he pointed out. “Sant Ji would extensively quote from the Guru Granth Sahib during his discourses and teach Gurbani to students at Dera Ballan,’’ he added.
Slamming the Sikh leadership, including the clergy and SGPC, he said the Guru Granth Sahib belonged not just to Sikhs, but to the entire mankind, and the Sikh leadership had done little to end caste-based discrimination in gurdwaras or to bring the Ravidassia community closer. This discrimination is against the ideals laid down in the holy book and has led to the present situation, he added.

I can understand your feelings because you revere GGS as a living guru but we never did and would never and this was the point of conflict. This is not to imply that we disrespect it in any manner. We believed in bani rather than the medium it is written on and we allowed both mona or anybody else to read it. Off couse GGS being a holy book has its inherent respect but we didn't believe in the rituals of airconditioning it, making it go to sleep, wake it up, providing it heat in winter specifically etc. If sikhs do it than that's fine, we have no issue with it. If GGS is a shared granth than one group can't enforce their mariada on everybody since sharing inherently implies that it is respected and worshipped equally by all. We addressed Ravidass as Guru and sikhs didn't like it so it is better to take own route.
If I take your analogy of cutting the limbs than how many limbs Guru Nanak Dev Ji cut. Satguru Naamdev, Satguru Sain, Baba Sheikh Farid, Bhagat Rama Nand were all senior to Guru Nanak Dev ji and obviously weren't alive when Guru nanak took their bani and included in GGS. How did he ask them? Moreover, GGS is a compiled Granth and Guru nanak Dev or Sikhs, I am afrain to say, don't get ownership of Guru ravidass Bani or other bani of other's saints. What if kabir panthis come and ask you to give back Satguru Kabir's bani? So analogy of yours, I am sorry to say is more based on your personal feelings.
You may argue that it is living but then again, it is not for us. For us Ravidassias it has been used as a reason to murder innocent ravidassias right in its front. Now which living guru would allow that...? Where was the living guru when innocent worshippers were stabbed in Vienna or a child's throat was almost slashed with gatra sahib ji and held at ransom. You may talk about beadbi but true living guru would never allow cold blooded murder of anybody. That is not the job of a guru but that is the job of a blood thirty monster. Living guru forgives and leaves it up to almighty to take care of things.

harjits4, as I pointed out earlier, it is likely a good move that Dera Ballan take their own path as clearly they were disrespecting Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. Although it is strange that they want to now wish to disregard the same Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji that they have used for years to amass their wealth and following. Thankfully, they do not speak for the Ravidass community at large and it appears from some reports that not for all their followers either.
Also as pointed out in another post, the bani of the Bhagats you have named is unique to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Not cut and paste as your Dera Ballan intend too.
In respect of violence, I do not know exactly what took place in Vienna although I am aware that Dera Ballan leaders have continuously disrespected Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji dispite requests to refrain from doing so. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was and never has been used as a reason to murder and being as you are on a Sikh forum, I would suggest you control your fingers when you type such things. Apart from hearing abour Ramanand, I was not at Vienna nor have I heard anything about the 'allegations' you are making. However you seem to overlook that your own Dera Ballan followers didn't seem to have any problem whilst commiting violence, rioting and looting as well as burning the same Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji that contains the bani of Bhagat Ravidass. It is evidence of 'hatred' rather than disrespecting 'rituals'. I would suggest that blame falls squarely on the Dera Ballans leaders.
It is clear that you are only this forum to stir up conflict.

To the best of my knowledge, Bhagat Ravidass Ji did not form a religion in his name whereas 'sab sikhan nu hukam hai, guru manio granth'. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji installed Guruship to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji themself. Are leaders at Dera Ballan saying they are on par with Bhagat Ravidass Ji in order that they can make these decisions to form a new faith?
May be the 'stern' words of Singh Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh have come about due to angs of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj being used to compile a new text. Simply not acceptable. harjits4, you claim Bhagat Ravidass Ji as your 'Guru'. If one of his limbs were removed without his hukam and worshipped by a man made faith, I doubt you would like it. Yet you seem to have no objections to the 'leaders' at Dera Ballan taking the same step with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. May be the lack of respect for Guru Ji is the problem here.

It appears Mark Tully just wants to capitalise on being one of the only 'western' journalists who interviewed Sant Ji. He's even forgetting his own story....not a good reflection of the truth. His antics remind me of Uncle Albert's war stories in Only Fools and Horses.
