  1. Another ultra held in Barnala

KZF, IKF, PPG plotted to revive militancy

JAMMU, June 5: Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), Neeta group, ‘Iknoor Khalsa Fauj’ and ‘Panj Pardhani Group’ had jointly hatched a plot to revive militancy in Punjab and Jammu for which they were strengthening their cadre in the two States.

A number of more arrests and recoveries were on the cards in Jammu and Punjab following sustained joint interrogation of three militants from Barnala district in Punjab by Jammu and Punjab Police teams at Safe House in Trikuta Nagar. The trio were arrested by police from Kanachak in an Indica car when they were returning to Barnala after taking an arms consignment from a Neeta group’s border smuggler along Chenab river in Akhnoor sector yesterday.

Makhan Singh, a close associate of Malkeet Singh, who was ring leader of three captured militants, was arrested from Barnala late last night after his name surfaced during interrogation of the ultras. Makhan was arrested by Barnala police from a hide-out where he had escaped after getting information about the arrest of his associates.

Houses and offices of other cadre of ‘Panj Pardhani Group’ and ‘Iknoor Khalsa Fauj’ were also raided by Barnala police but all of them had gone into hiding.

"Police of both States were investigating the case vigorously. Punjab Police teams have reached here. Police from the two States were sharing whatever information was available with them in the case. Hopefully, network of the militants will be smashed", IGP Jammu K Rajendra, who was monitoring investigations, told the Excelsior.

According to official sources, ‘Iknoor Khalsa Fauj’ and ‘Panj Pardhani Group’ had been floated by former militants of Punjab few months back after a row had erupted between supporters and opponents of Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Besides Ram Rahim Singh, the two groups had also kept Pyara Singh Baniyarawale as their main target.

The two groups had sought the support of KZF supremo Ranjeet Singh Neeta, a resident of Jammu presently operating from Pakistan, to supply them arms and ammunition besides activate his erstwhile cadre in the two States.

Sources said Neeta had agreed to supply consignment of arms to the Punjab based groups with the condition that in addition to striking at their targets the groups will also revive militancy in Jammu and Punjab.

According to them, a border smuggler, who had provided the consignment of arms and ammunition to the three militants along Chenab river in Akhnoor sector, was also part of Neeta group and was absconding. Neeta had promised more consignments of arms to the two groups.

Newly formed groups had also established contacts with some former militants, who had agreed to help them, sources said. They added that all three arrested militants were very hardcore and they frequently keep on changing their statements apparently in a bid to give their cadre enough time to escape.

Sources confirmed that some youths have also gone underground in Jammu as they too were in touch with the newly formed groups and feared that captured ultras might disclose their identity. More arrests and recoveries were on cards in the two States, they said.

They added that Punjab Police has also taken the bid to revive militancy very seriously and that is why 15 senior police officers from Ludhiana and Barnala have been camping here for interrogation of arrested militants. Barnala police team is headed by SP (Headquarters) Barnala, Mr Parmar.

Police today secured remand of all three militants upto Saturday and will seek extension of their remand after Saturday. There is no proposal to hand over militants to Punjab Police but the latter are welcome to interrogate them here as long as they want, sources said.

Makhan Singh is being quizzed in Barnala. He could be brought here for cross questioning along with his three associates, they added.

As reported today, Malkeet Singh, Surjeet Singh and Harbans Singh, all residents of Barnala, Punjab were arrested by police and Army from Malpur Dumi at Kanachak late Tuesday night when they were returning to Barnala after taking consignment of arms and ammunition from the border smuggler of Neeta group.

  2. Extradited terrorist acquitted by Punjab court

    Mumbai News.Net

    Tuesday 29th April, 2008 (IANS)

A former Khalistani terrorist who was extradited from the US in 2006 after a 12-year effort is set to walk free with a court here acquitting him in the third - and last - of the three murder cases registered against him by Punjab police.

Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) - a terrorist organisation demanding a separate homeland for Sikhs - terrorist Kulbir Singh Barapind alias Kulbira was acquitted by the additional district and sessions judge B.K. Mehta here Tuesday for want of evidence.

What is embarrassing for the Punjab police is that it failed to provide conclusive evidence before the court during trial against Kulbir Singh. He was charged with killing three brothers and the wife of one of them in a village near here Sept 1992. The family of the victims could not identify Kulbir Singh as the killer.

Punjab police made efforts for 12 years to get Kulbir Singh extradited from US. He had fled to that country in 1994.

Kulbir Singh was earlier acquitted in another murder case for the killing of former Akali Dal legislator from Banga town, 45 km from here, and three others in 1992. Here also, the case fell for want of evidence. He was acquitted in a third murder case in Phillaur town as well.

Though there were cases against the terrorist under TADA, the Punjab police could not pursue those as it had given in writing to the US courts that he would not be tried under any special law (like TADA) after his extradition.

Former militant acquitted in murder case

Posted at Wednesday, 30 April 2008 09:04 IST

Jalandhar, April 30: Former militant, Kulbir Singh Bara Pind, who was extradited from the US in connection with three murder cases, was today acquitted in a case pertaining to killing of four persons.

Additional Sessions Judge B K Mehta, immediately after the prosecution closed its evidence, ordered his acquittal, as the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidences of his being involved in the murder of four persons including a woman.

Bara Pind's acquittal in the case was possible because the two main "eyewitnesses" in the case -- Sohan Singh and his wife Gurmail Kaur -- father and mother of the deceased brothers in whose presence the four were killed in the night of September 1992, refused to identify the accused.

Even the eyewitnesses stated in the court that the FIR was registered by the police only and they were just told to put their signature on the dotted lines, sources said.

With his today's acquittal, Bara Pind was ultimately acquitted in all the three murder cases for which he was extradited from United States in 2006.

In the other two murder cases including of murder of one Sahib Singh of Dhakka Colony, Phillaur and another of the murder of former Akali MLA Balwant Singh Sarhal and his three aides, he was already released by the respective courts.

  3. Sikh school sidesteps French ban

    By Emma Jane Kirby

    BBC News, Paris

A Sikh school is opening its doors in a Paris suburb for the first time on Saturday in the wake of tougher French laws on religious dress.

The special school in Bobigny was set up after secularisation laws in 2004 prevented Sikh boys from wearing their traditional turbans in class.

Several boys dropped out of mainstream education in protest.

The Sikh school was built by a local entrepreneur whose son was excluded from a public school three years ago.

The boy had refused to remove his turban in class.

The French laws ban the wearing of prominent religious symbols such as Muslim headscarves or Sikh turbans in public places like offices or schools.

The Sikh school will start with fewer than 15 pupils but it is hoped that a Sikh college will open later in the year to allow older boys to take business qualifications.

Although the school will celebrate its inauguration over the weekend, it is unlikely to begin classes on Monday because it is still waiting for a final approval from the local education authority.

  4. Three taxi drivers dead in one month

THREE taxi drivers were murdered in the UK last month bringing the number killed to 44 in 15 years of rising violence against drivers.

Gian Chand Bajar, of Darnley Road, Gravesend, was the third driver to be killed at work in May.

Mohammed Al Masiah was the first on May 5, Mohammed Mahroof the next on May 8 and Mr Chand Bajar, of Darnley Road, Gravesend, on May 23.

The popular Sikh died at Darent Valley Hospital after being attacked in St Benedicts Avenue, Gravesend, about 10pm.

United Taxi Group (UTG) spokesman Shane Waterman said: "In May 2007 we passed a watershed in the taxi driving industry. In one month three taxi drivers, people and in this case all men just doing their job, earning a living and trying to provide for their families, have lost their lives in violent attacks."

In the last 15 years more than 40 taxi and private hire drivers have been murdered while working.

Mr Waterman added: "If 44 teachers had met their end in the same way in the classroom in the last 15 years, there would be a public outcry. If the same number of doctors had been murdered in their surgeries by psychotic patients, there would be calls in the House of Commons for better protection for the medical profession.

"These 44 people are the forgotten casualties of what happens when the end of a Saturday night out goes wrong."

Luke Aujila appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday (11) charged with the murder of Mr Chand Bajar for a preliminary hearing. He will re-appear on August 13 for a plea and case management hearing.

Mr Waterman continued: "The three drivers who lost their lives last month were all people who took a chance coming to Britain, for the possibility of a new life and to enjoy the freedoms and benefits a life in this country brings with it. When they made that journey, I am sure that an untimely end, and heartache and despair for their families, did not figure in their thinking. Such a state of affairs should make any right-thinking Briton ashamed.

"Since the murder in Gravesend talks have been swift with the police and the council and we are determined to improve security in the industry. We will not give up we owe it to these drivers' who were killed doing their job."

Mohamed Ali Maslah was stabbed in the heart on May 5 in Islington. He was found lying beside his silver Vauxhall Zafira private hire car. Desmond Wilson is due to appear at the Old Bailey on August 9 charged with his murder.

The victim's company Archway Cars has started a zero-tolerance campaign for passengers who attack drivers.

On May 8 passers-by found 39-year-old driver Mohammed Mahroof in High Wycombe with a single stab wound. He died in hospital. All 100 cars from Neales Taxis are now being fitted with CCTV cameras and panic buttons.

Two men, Mohammed Mahroof Mustafa, 20, and Asif Ahram Mohammed, 26, are due to appear at Reading Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on August 9.

  5. Racist park attack

    28 June 2007

RACIST teenagers kicked the turban off a Sikh man's head with a football and then attacked his friends.

The six-strong gang, between 14 and 17, also threw stones at the Asian men as they met at Fort Gardens on Friday May 25.

Detective Constable Richard Debnam said: "This mindless act of violence on law-abiding members of the community will not be tolerated. Everybody should be able to enjoy the gardens and parks of Gravesend in peace without being subjected to this kind of harassment."

At 5pm the three boys and three girls began playing football near the attacked group, purposely kicking the ball in to them.

They threw stones and punched one man in the face and bruised his eye.

Punjab police aborts bid to eliminate self styled godman Bhaniarewala

    Punjab Newsline Network

    Friday, 15 June 2007

CHANDIGARH: Punjab police on Friday claimed to have foiled an attempt by two Sikh youth to eliminate self-styled godman Piara Singh Bhaniarewala, who has been excommunicated from the Sikh religion for his alleged blesphamy acts.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohali Ranbir Singh Khatra said that Swaranjit Singh alias Bobby General Secretary of Youth Wing of ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) unit of Ropar district a resident of Bahadarpur village and Gurcharan Singh alias Kala son of a late Bhindrawale Tigers Force (BTF) ultra Sangat Singh Bawani’s were arrested in this connection.

Both Bobby and Kala had planned to assassinate a controversial godman Bhaniarawala. They had formed a Khalsa Action Committee, in which they were recruiting the like-minded persons.

Khatra said that a .455 bore US-made 1950-model sophisticated pistol, a .30 bore revolver, its 5 live cartridges and 2 live grenades were recovered from the duo, who were still on the job to acquire more sophisticated weapons.

Divulging their reorganization and terror plans, the SSP told that both Bobby and Kala had met in Nabha high-security jail where they were lodged under rape and attempt to murder cases, respectively.

Being residents of the same district, both Bobby and Kala developed good relations in the jail, where they also came in contact with former terrorists Daljit Singh Bittu now senior vice president of SAD(Amritsar), Balbir Singh Beera and Gursharan Singh Gama, who were also lodged there.

Khatra said when Kala told Bittu that he was late ultra’s son, Bittu advised him and Bobby to do something “good” for the Sikh community. They hatched the conspiracy while in jail, SSP said.

While Bobby was released on bail over a year back, Kala was bailed out over two months back. On meeting outside jail, they started working on their Bhaniarawale’s assassination plan, on which Bobby told Kala that Bhaniarawale’s security cover has been strengthened, following which sophisticated arms and ammunitions were required to kill him.

After recovering Bawani’s hidden arms and ammunitions, they planned to snatch the arms of the Punjab Home Guard personnel on guard at Lakhmipur-Jhallian siphon of Bhakra canal near Ropar, in which they had not yet succeeded, the SSP divulged.

To raise money Kala and his accomplices tried to snatch a cash bag of a trader in Kurali on June 6, when Kala was held and during his sustained interrogation, he spilled the beans and helped the police to lay hands on Bobby as well, revealed the SSP.

    Honoured vet dies aged 86

A highly decorated former soldier who was one of the region’s last remaining Asian servicemen from the Second World War, has died.

Pakhar Singh Khela, of Fowler Street, Blakenhall, Wolverhampton, died on June 8, at the age of 86 after battling prostate cancer. Mr Khela lied about his age so he could sign up and fight, at just 17.

He was a member of the Sikh Regiment D Company after joining the Indian Army in 1938 and went on to be honoured with the Burma Star campaign medal.

His grandson Kuldip Khela, aged 34, said Mr Khela completed a total of 15 years of military service with the British and Indian armies.

Kuldip said: “It was his life. “He was so proud of being able to serve his country and never missed a Remembrance Parade.

“He had some difficulties with language and hearing when he met his old comrades but they would look at each other’s medals and there would be an instant respect and bond.

    “It was very touching.”

Mr Khela’s distinguished military record meant he was given dispensation to move to England with his family before the mass immigration from India.

He arrived in 1963 and worked in Wolverhampton’s heavy industries, including Qualcast, until his retirement.

He was extensively involved in the Royal British Legion, the Sikh Temples and the inter faith community.

Mr Khela’s wife Rattan Kaur Khela passed away in January this year.

He leaves two sons, two daughters, 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Kuldip said: “He will be greatly missed by all sections of the community because he was a great example of what it needs.

“He was so proud to serve and protect his country and encouraged everyone else to do the same,” added Kuldip.

Mr Khela’s funeral service is to take place at 3pm on June 18 in Bushbury Crematorium.

A memorial service will then be held at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, in Duncan Street, Blakenall, from 4pm.

    Blinded by a hitman

    By Bruce Smith

A man blinded by a hitman believes the answers to finding his attacker lie in his Sikh community.

Amarjit Singh UppalAmarjit Singh Uppal, 50, was in his own driveway in Leeds when he had corrosive fluid thrown into his face.

Today he told the YEP he suspects decisions at the Sikh temple in Chapeltown Road, Leeds, where he is the secretary may be behind the attack. He personally had raised issues that he felt were controversial.

Mr Uppal has undergone surgery but must wait to know if his sight will return.

He said: "I am convinced the attacker was paid by someone from within the Sikh community. Everybody in our community believes it was a hire job and there must be people who definitely know who.

"There have been some events in the temple which some people may have thought controversial.

"Only the lowest of the low could do something like this. I still have a young family to look after. I cannot believe the mentality of the people who would do this."

The father-of-three said his job as an engineer in Bradford could be affected.

On April 3 the left the temple and headed for his home in Moortown. As he drove up his road he saw a man walking holding a silver foil tray.

"He appeared to be stirring something and I assumed it was what he was eating. I stopped to let him past, but he stopped to let me pull into the drive.

"I got out and he turned down my drive. He threw the tray in my face saying something like 'Take this'.

"The gooey solution did not burn but was all over my face. My vision was completely blurred. My instinct was to try to wipe it off with my hands. I ran inside and asked my wife to call an ambulance while I washed my eyes,

"My sight did not get better. I was taken to St James's Hospital and they washed my eyes with special liquid.

"I was in a state of shock and disbelief. The damage to my eyes is quite severe."

Mr Uppal was in hospital for three days and has been told he may never get his sight back.

He paid tribute to the local community. "There have been numerous calls, local families have sent flowers, get well cards and the community as a whole in Leeds has been wonderful.

"I am trying to keep my spirits up and to be as positive as I can. My family are very distressed, but they try not to show it."

The policeman leading the hunt for the attacker, Det Insp Adrian Taylor, said he was African Caribbean aged 25 to 30, 5ft 5in tall, of medium build and had short dark hair and wore grey trousers and a long-sleeved light brown jacket.

"I appeal to anyone with information to ring police on 0113 241 3659 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

  10. Sikh boy's hair cut by attackers

A 15-year-old Sikh boy had his hair cut during an unprovoked and racist assault in an Edinburgh park, police said.

The incident happened at about 1930 GMT in Pilrig Park on Tuesday.

Lothian and Borders Police said the victim was initially subjected to verbal racial abuse by four young white males and then knocked to the ground.

After he was punched and kicked, the teenager's headwear came off and the youths cut his hair, an act considered deeply offensive to the Sikh community.

The gang ran off across the park, exiting into Pilrig Street and heading in the direction of Leith Walk.

A police spokesperson said: "This was an extremely distressing attack on a young member of our community."

He said those responsible for the attack were aged about 16.

The police have issued descriptions of each of the four suspects:

The first was a white male aged about 16, who was 5ft 10in tall. He had brown eyes and was wearing dark Adidas tracksuit bottoms, a dark coloured thick hoodie and a dark coloured beanie hat, possibly Adidas

The second was also a white male of about 16 who had a gold hoop ear piercing on his right ear. He was wearing a black Helly Hansen jacket and a dark coloured beanie hat

The third suspect was described as a white 16-year-old male who was wearing dark clothing

The fourth, a white male aged 16, had blue eyes, a long sharp nose and facial hair. He was wearing a dark coloured Adidas tracksuit and a white beanie hat

Witnesses to the incident have been asked to call Gayfield Square Police Station on 0131 620 5125.

I think it something to do with Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha. They were looking to open one on Church Lane before...the old Handsworth Wood Girls School. The new one i think is planned for the Tenby building which if i'm right is straight down the road from wheeler street gurdwara.
