  1. but seriously is it mandatory for girls to wear dastaar?? or is it just for singhs??

Is it really madatory? I'm not sure, but all I can say is 99% of the Sikh girls I see in my area and even growing up, never wear/wore dastaars. It is only something I have gotten used to recently and my expression is always "Wow!", with excitment. :o I just say to myself that if this is the way that it was meant to be, then why do a lot of Sikh men wear dastaars, but then the women just wear a chunee, and it has been going on for centuries like that. :gg:

I'm all for equality, though, and if women want to wear dastaars, more power to them, but if they don't, then that is also fine. I can't help but wonder how a girl decides to wear a dastaar and when they do, we refer to them as "Singhnee" usually.

lol...i thought that was the main question being asked about dastaar :gg: ...

  2. this is funny because i am taking this class this sem psych of sex and gender and wht i got to know at the end of the semester from tht class now is that most religions have negative influence on gender......but in terms of sikhism i dont think theres any religion thats as flexible to gender issues as sikhism is.......then i guess dastaar is for everyone no matter what gender and race it would be .... thas the way of sikhism...... :)

  3. I am almost done with my graduation from one of the best places in india in electronics , and would probably be pursuing MS in any of the top tech schools in USA , I have an outstanding academic record .

Just a doubt , Whats the condition of racial abuse/hate in USA nowadays , I heard it really boiled after the 9/11 , they were targetting sikhs as well , I just want to know , would there be any problem if I join any USA institiutes for postgraduation not acaemically but because I am a sikh . I have very modern viewpoints and have absolutely no issue gelling in with who soever from wherever.!! , but whats the state in USA?? , i heard they do hard security checks wherever you go , and even inside educational institutions , they might distinguish you..I am a non-amritdhari ,but keep uncut hair.I would like to have some real insights from someone who's in USA and knows things well .

I know UK is fine with all this , but I am not planning to do my MS there.!

    Peace.

    Your Friend.

dude.... it depends on the type of school ur gona go for.....eventually that would make a lot of difference based on sikh student population like mines already got a sikh student association ,.... its decent out here........ most segregated schools are sort of orthodox in such approach.........

  4. hmm..... seems quite plausible to me though..... the actual reason why the thread was started is to discuss the issue that punjabi culture has influenced many aspects of our life but does it make any sense to conclude that our identity should solely be based on our culture or sikhism has a role in it?....hope tht wud clear things up...... bhul chuk maaf

now thats more like a discussion, im sorry i did start to read but i began to loose the will to live as it was soooooooooooooooo long :BL:

the actual reason why the thread was started is to discuss the issue that punjabi culture has influenced many aspects of our life

Has it? take a look at yesterdays generation, like my parents where you will see Punjabi more than a sikh...........but todays generation..............is it realy Punjabi influences or more "western" traits that are the dominating factors causing people to give up/loose/abandon the SIKH identity?

does it make any sense to conclude that our identity should solely be based on our culture or sikhism has a role in it?....hope tht wud clear things up...... bhul chuk maaf

Now this is just my opinion............but where someone cannot have his own identity he look to the world to find one he can fit into................identity is based on many things......culture i do not think is a big dominating factor as much as it used to be............back in the 70's/80's where the gurdwaras would be full of "white hankies" and Gurjit Singh bacame known as "Garry" or "G" or "Jim"

Indentity comes from inside ourselves...........SIkh teaches us to find who we REALY are......Man Tuh Joot Saroop Hai, apnah mool pashaan........Culture is nothing but a lable we affix ourselves to when our OWN indentity dissapears.............

This is happening where by a gursikh referred to another as AKJ, Taksali, Nihang etc etc rather than, thats my brother/sister..................these "groups" are nothing more that punjabi like cultures in order to gain an identity for oursleves...........a way of recognition............because the inner search has failed us.

When you can see waheguru in yourself, you cannot see waheguru in anyone else....

so in conclusion...................Sikh and Culture are two very different things.........sikh teaches us to move away from society/caste/social status and recognition and look upon all as equal and the same.............Culture...................again is nothing more than a method of segregation and isolation............where the first thing we are doing, (whether it be on a sub consious level) is looking at our diffrences to others and building our identity based on these differences....

    bhul chuck maafi

thanks bro for an honest opinion.... i really appreciate it...... to be honest i consider both the elements to be distinct and theres no way we can combine them ....... about identity i think there are lot more social, religious, political, economic, personality and family circumstances that affect us in each and every single way in shaping in what we are and what we would be in the near future.....

i respect ur opinion .... thanks again

and I THINK SINCE THE DISCUSSION IS GOING KINDA TOO FAR ..... I AM GONA TAKE THE POPULAR OPINION AS "ITS UNFAIR AND UNJUSTIFIABLE TO SAY THAT BHANGRA IS PART OF SIKH PHILOSOPHY ".......

    bhul chuk maaf

  6. Due to poor grammer, your question doesn't make any sense.

Are you asking who would have studied maharaj to give an answer?

Or are you asking what we should say to a non-sikh who has studied maharaj?

well...my point was say as an example if a white guy who has been interested in sikhism and has done a good amount of study on our religion through guru granth sahib ...... how would you justify the bhangra and sikhism relationship .......? bhul chuk maaf.....

I am really glad that you guys turned up to discuss the topic as am trying to work on a research based on sikhism and current issues that are affecting us today ..... i really appreciate each one of you for doing that :WW: ......

  7. Ok Bro,

Lets not take it any further, stick to our own views.

I think Ram Chander was just an ordinary mortal as us, if he ever existed.

I will not take it further.

gurfateh bhhenji.... welll if u really believe tht ram chander was just a mortal being like any other being at that time..... then why not those other beings were able to do what he did both as killing the most notorious being on the planet and establish a well known peaceful reign during his time at the throne......now am not propagating that we should just start worshipping him.... i believe that akal purakh is unlimited in many ways so if undermining one of his powers then why believe in akal purakh? .......

  8. haha...thas not one of the most uncommon things you would find in India.....but yea i really liked the atmosphere at the time i was there......i mean it was more like something that i never witnessed before......most above of all its said to have also been influenced by many great gursikhs who are said to be founding fathers of such institution....... gursikhs like sant baba teja singh ji inspired by sant baba attar singh ji mastuane wale......

  9. SANT BABA RANJIT SINGH JI (DHADRIANWALE)

    AND

GIANI THAKUR SINGH JI (DAMDAMI TAKSAL)

    post-6773-1209935349_thumb.jpg

HONORED BY LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR JOHN GARAMENDI

Lt. Governor John Garamendi of California USA, honoured Sant Baba Ranjit Singh Ji (Dhadrianwale) and Giani Thakur Singh Ji (Damdami Taksal) based on the positive impact they are making on the community. He was mainly attracted by the number of community members influenced by the Parchaar done by these individuals. Sant Baba Ranjit Singh Ji are currently on their 2008 three week Visit to California (U.S.A.) for Gurmat Parchaar. Sant Ji and Giani Ji are working hard to promote peaceful and spiritual lifestyles across the world with the aim of Gurmat Parchaar and Amrit Sanchaar according to the Panthic Sikh principles.

awesome.......these guys know what they are doing and they totally are worthy of such respect..... :WW:

  10. actually its awesome... one of my cousins used to be there so we used to go to see him like once or twice in a year ...... its located between beautiful mountainous landscape and the main focus of the school is to ensure both gurmat and academic education.... which makes the school amazing and unique in a way that many of the baru sahib students are still recognized around the world...

  11. Your apology has been accepted by the Garden State Sikh Association. Thank you! :)

THANK YOU!! for makin me realize of being unfair in my approach

But wicked do you think that if we were to represent ourselves in front of a non sikh person who might have done a comprehensive amount of study in guru granth sahib and tell him if theres any relation between the two?

  12. I ve to agree with that.... statistically not only "jatts" are the biggest majority in sikhs but also they have found to be involved amongst most notorious things prohibited in sikhism

Oh, please!! You're from New Jersey and I grew up there. Don't embarrass the Garden State with such baseless comments, bro. If you ever want to talk in person, like at Bridgewater Gurdwara, a place full of "Jatts", just let me know!

By the way, you would never make a comment like that infront of "Jatts" in person, am I right? Yeah, you've offended me greatly with your stupid racist remark. People like you are a waste of time because when it comes to having discussions in person, you won't admit these types of things. It's easy to hide on the internet, isn't that, right, "njjassa", or whoever you are. Enjoy your comfortable cyberspot!

ok.... i agree tht i was being sort of a racist but does it have anything to do with where am i from or anything like that... i think not....

my point is that jatts are the majority class in sikhs and their representation of sikhs in the world means a lot to all other non-jatt sikhs in the world...i hope u wud agree on that......but i still apologize for being unfair and biased in my approach....didn mean in any way to offend anyone...... just concerned about what i ve witnessed and the type of experience that i had so far ......

  13. I ve to agree with that.... statistically not only "jatts" are the biggest majority in sikhs but also they have found to be involved amongst most notorious things prohibited in sikhism... I guess they justify their actions on basis of their number in sikh population and in some or the other way they think themselves part of "popular culture"......... and this fact has nothing to do with being racist because its what we all see on daily basis and most above of all its against the concept of sikhism .......

bhangra name is derived from bhang ... its the dance which lord shiva use to do after drinking bhang ... jatt race being came into existence from lord shiva ... thats why it was their dance ...

i m not saying this ... thats what punjabi culture says !!!

  14. There have been many instances outside punjab where we as a sikhs have gotten confused with this issue and probably have found ourselves in disrespecting many of the gurmat traditions pertaining to this topic. How would you justify such actions?
