  1. If you are bothered by too many thoughts during meditation - do not be, its ok let thoughts be, the more you fight the more they will be ...so just observe them.The aim of mediation is not to be thought free but to be free of the reactions that they evoke in us - like anger, worry, excitement, stress etc.In time you will reach a state when you carry this thought awareness throughout the day and not just during the meditation period, giving you tremendous power over your runaway mind - you will have the power to rein in a negative thought such as animosity or worry which would have previously overpowered you and caused you to act in a hateful way or be stressed.
  2. Looking for tech savvy sevadars - I want to get an app developed in ionic or react native (that works on all major platforms), that would notify every 1 hour (or another interval configured by the user) with a gurbani quote and small blurb about how to incorporate the teaching in their day to day life. I do have the database of about 70 tuqs for now but will keep updating it regularly , the app will update its database from the central source every week or so. This way technology will help us stay constantly in touch with the guru and we will spend more of our breaths in a connected fashion.
  3. Why Forest Bathing Is Good for Your Health Though any kind of nature can enhance our health and happiness, there’s something special about being in a forest. By Karin Evans | August 20, 2018 Print Bookmark “Nature deficit disorder” is a modern affliction. With more people living in cities, working in high-rise office buildings, and becoming addicted to their innumerable electronic devices, many of us are indeed experiencing a nature deficit. This is true for children and adults alike. In his new book, Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness, Japanese medical doctor and researcher Qing Li presents some sobering statistics: By 2050, according to the United Nations Population Division, three quarters of the world’s people will live in cities. Even now, the average American spends 93 percent of the time indoors, and some ten hours a day on social media—more than they spend asleep. The Kumano Kodo trail in Japan In Japan, there’s enough awareness about this deficit that Li heads up an organization called The Japanese Society of Forest Medicine, which promotes research on the therapeutic effects of forests on human health and educates people on the practice of forest bathing. His book—a companion to the center he runs—explores research on these benefits, while offering a number of techniques we can use to enhance them. “Some people study forests. Some people study medicine. I study forest medicine to find out all the ways in which walking in the forest can improve our well-being,” writes Li. The history of forest bathing Japan is a country that is both urbanized and heavily forested. Trees cover two-thirds of the island’s landmass, and yet a majority of Japan’s people live in crowded city conditions. Li himself lives in Tokyo, a city he describes as “the most crowded city in the world.” Perhaps that’s why the art of “forest bathing”—shinrin-yoku—began there. Forest bathing involves slowly walking through a forest, taking in the atmosphere through all your senses, and enjoying the benefits that come from such an excursion. In 1982, Japan launched a national program to encourage forest bathing, and in 2004, a formal study of the link between forests and human health began in Iiyama, Japan—a place particularly known for its lush, green forests. Now, each year upwards of 2.5 million people walk those forest trails as a way to ease stress and enhance health. Li’s interest in forest research began when he was a stressed-out medical student. He went away for a week of forest camping, and found it restored his physical and emotional health. That inspired him to begin researching the benefits of forests on human health and well-being. In 2004, he helped found the Forest Therapy Study Group, aimed at finding out why being among trees makes us feel so much better. The healing power of the forest After years of careful study, Li has found that spending time in a forest can reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and anger; strengthen the immune system; improve cardiovascular and metabolic health; and boost overall well-being. “Wherever there are trees, we are healthier and happier,” writes Li. And, he adds, it isn’t about exercising—like hiking or jogging—it’s simply about being in nature. Why would this be? It’s long been recognized that humans have a biological need to connect with nature. Some 20 years ago, American biologist E. O. Wilson noted that humans are “hardwired” to connect with the natural world, and that being in nature had a profoundly positive effect on human health. Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness (Viking, 2018, 320 pages) Li’s research seems to corroborate this. For example, one of his studies looked at whether forest bathing could improve sleep patterns among middle-aged Tokyo office workers who tended to suffer sleep deficiency due to high levels of stress. During the study, participants walked the same amount of time in a forest that they usually did in a non-forest setting on a normal working day. After a walk in the forest, participants were significantly less anxious, slept better, and slept longer. In addition, researchers found that afternoon walks were even more beneficial than morning walks. “You sleep better when you spend time in a forest, even when you don’t increase the amount of physical activity you do,” reported Li. To further assess the effects of time spent in a forest, Li measured people’s moods before and after walking in the woods or in an urban environment. While other studies have shown that walking anywhere outdoors reduces depression, anxiety, and anger, Li found that only the experience of walking in a forest improved people’s vigor and reduced fatigue. The health secrets of trees seem to lie in two things—the higher concentration of oxygen that exists in a forest, as compared to an urban setting, and the presence of plant chemicals called phytoncides—natural oils that are part of a plant’s defense system against bacteria, insects, and fungi. Exposure to these substances, says Li, can have measurable health benefits for humans. Physiological stress is reduced, for example, and both blood pressure and heart rate are lowered. Evergreens—pine, cedar, spruce, and conifers—are the largest producers of phytoncides, so walking in an evergreen forest seems to have the greatest health benefits. How to do forest bathing So, is there a specific art to forest bathing? Or is it just as easy as a walk in the woods? Connecting with nature is simple, writes Li. “All we have to do is accept the invitation. Mother Nature does the rest.” Here are some of his suggested steps. Find a spot. Depending where you are, find a good source of nature. One doesn’t need to journey deep into a forest for these benefits. Just look for any green area. It could be an urban park, a nature preserve, or a trail through suburban woods. Forests with conifers are thought to be particularly beneficial. “Let your body be your guide. Listen to where it wants to take you,” Li says. Some people will respond to sunny glades, others to shadier places. Listen to your own wisdom. For people who don’t have access to a forest, or can’t get outside for some reason, infusing essential tree oils in your home can provide benefits, too. Engage all your senses. “Let nature enter through your ears, eyes, nose, mouth, hands, and feet,” says Li. Actively listen, smell, touch, and look. “Drink in the flavor of the forest and release your sense of joy and calm.” Don’t hurry. Slow walking is recommended for beginners. And it’s good to spend as much time as possible. You’ll notice positive effects after twenty minutes, says Li, but a longer visit, ideally four hours, is better. Try different activities. Try doing yoga in the woods, or Tai chi, or meditation. Take a picnic. Write a poem. Study plants. You can venture alone, or with a companion. In Japan, forest walking therapists are even available. Appreciate the silence. One of the downsides of urban living is the constant noise. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a wooded area that’s free from human-produced sound. Silence is restorative, and a forest can have its own healing sound—rustling leaves, a trickle of water, birdsong. Spend a few quiet moments with a favorite tree. If nothing else, when we connect with nature we are reminded that we are part of a larger whole. And that, Li notes, can lead us to be less selfish and to think more of others. Li’s book, which includes illustrations and a map of “40 Beautiful Forests Across the World,” is an invitation and an inspiration to take a walk in the woods, wherever you are. https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/why_forest_bathing_is_good_for_your_health?utm_medium=email&utm_source=other&utm_campaign=opencourse.es3OSXqhEea1Vw7ENWFEPw.announcements~opencourse.es3OSXqhEea1Vw7ENWFEPw.NyzGa6cwEeiD2QqOJunOiA

  6. We must practise this every morning - throw away the wrong notions of =- Being a separate self, Ek Mool na boojhan Aapna unhonda aap genaende || difference between human and non humans, difference between living and nong living and A life limited by birth and death - Na kich janame Na kich mare || First is the idea that I am this body, this body is me or, this body is mine and it belongs to me. We say these things based on the notion that I am; But a better statement would be, I inter-am. Its closer to the truth in the light of interconnectedness; we see there is no separate self that can exist by itself. You cannot exist without your parents, your ancestors, food, water, air, earth, and everything else in the cosmos. By looking deeply into the nature of reality, we can throw away the notion. The second notion the Diamond Sutra advises us to throw away is the notion of person or human being. When we look into the human being, we see animal ancestors, we see plant and mineral ancestors. A human is made of non-human elements. If we take away the non-human elements, the human being would no longer be there. This is the oldest teaching on deep ecology. In order to protect the human being, you have to protect what is not human. Discriminating between human and nature is a wrong view. The third notion is that of living beings. We distinguish living beings from non-living beings. We distinguish humans and animals from plants and minerals. But looking deeply into living beings, we see elements that we call non-living beings: plants and minerals. You can see that plants and minerals are also alive. After meditation we see there's no real frontier separating living beings and so-called non-living beings. The fourth notion to be thrown away is the notion of life span. We believe that we are born at one point in time, that we shall die at another point in time, and that in between is our life span. Most of us believe we'll spend sevety, eightly, nnety, one hundred years on this planet and then we'll be gone. But when we look deeply, we see this is a wrong perception. In our mind, to be born means that from nothing we become something, to die means that from something we become nothing; and from someone we become no one. But a cloud cannot be born; it has come from the water in the rivers and oceans, and dust and the heat of the sun ha
  7. Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, “Don’t do it!” He said, “Nobody loves me.” I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?” He said, “Yes.” I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?” He said, “A Christian.” I said, “Me too! Protestant or Catholic?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me too! What franchise?” He said, “Baptist.” I said, “Me too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?” He said, “Northern Baptist.” I said, “Me too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.” I said, “Me too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.” I said, “Me too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879 or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.” I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him over. The joke sums it up for all who hate others becuase of differing views.

  9. Thanks for comments SANGH and Monatosingh, Our model is a bit different (its supposed to be very personal) - its like worldvision's one on one sponsorship where you write to the kid(s) you sponsor and talk to him/her over skype etc, so your money is not ending up in a pool with no traceability. I am personally financially independent so will ensure if the project does not succeed , it goes to some organization like SOPW .
  10. Looking to start a residential school with two goals - (i)Provide underprivileged kids with a childhood and education (ii) Teach these kids gurmat, sangeet and shastart vidya with a view to prepare future parcharaks - ones who will help entire humanity (not just sikhs) unlock the peace and joy that is forever within us. I have created a facebook group , please join (https://www.facebook.com/groups/402189280239697/)- Feel free to add your friends - please spread the word , also lets start idea pooling as to how make this work at scale - my vision is at least one or more schools in every city/town/village where we have sizable sikh population. Currently our dasbandh is being wasted on lavish langars and palatial gurdwaras, we need simplicity and altruism that gurus espoused
  11. We have blind faith (anni shardha) in rituals such as akhand path, chavar, parikrama, sukhasan / parkash , rumala charana, nishan sahib, matha tekna, nagar kirtans , karah parshad but we have zero faith in knowledge imbibed in the book we call our Guru (which literally means 'guide'). In fact deep down in our hearts we firmly believe that reading SGGS and them implementing the teachings in our day to day life will not bring any special benefit and hence we are willing to study lot of self help books but overlook the timeless wisdom contained in the guru. If you do agree then rather than merely liking this post, please start studying one or two pages with full concentration (as if you were to write an exam tomorrow) and contemplate all day long on what you read. Make contentment your ear-rings, humility your begging bowl, and meditation the ashes you apply to your body. Stay contented in what you have rather than compare your physical attributes or material wealth with others . Also stay humble and keep away from any show off . Meditate every time you get some free time - even while walking or commuting. Kẖinthā kāl ku▫ārī kā▫i▫ā jugaṯ dandā parṯīṯ. Let the remembrance of death be the patched coat you wear, let the purity of virginity be your way in the world, and let faith in the Lord be your walking stick. Remember death - everything is impermanent and hence not worth taking too seriously (eh jug dhune ka pahaar) and keep your mind and body 'virgin' i.e. free from vices such as greed, anger, lust, malice etc. Have a belief that whatever I see, hear , touch or feel is nothing but Waheguru himself. Ā▫ī panthī sagal jamāṯī man jīṯai jag jīṯ. See the brotherhood of all mankind as the highest order of Yogis ; conquer your own mind, and conquer the world. Harbor no grudge against anyone - accept all as your own family . Battle with your mind day in out and out, every time the mind throws up an impulse like checking phone or buying something - take a few deep breaths and see if it subsides. https://www.facebook.com/groups/sikhint
  13. (i) Read one or more pages of SGGS and listen to as much kirtan as possible. (ii) Eat only to support the body and not for the fun of it - (oni duniya tore bandhna ann pani thora khaya), also making sure no sentient being was hurt for my taste buds. (iii) Right after waking - first thing 5 -10 minutes of simran(iv) Khalsa should be tyar bartryar - simple home workout - 3 sets of pushups, squats and leg raises - our body is a shastar too afterall (v) Not engage in meaningless gossip only use words to inspire joy in others (no fikka bolna) -Lab lob ahankar taj trishna , bahuta nahi bolna (vi) Minimize use of electronics (especially cell phone) - they steal our precious breaths like none other (vii) Give away clothes, electronics , furniture etc that I do not need and live minimally (viii) Sponsor underprivileged children and help them realize their dreams. (ix) Educate people about virtues of simple living, simple weddings (x) Drop castist surnames if you still use them and discard all baggage of this evil brahmanical practice - our gurus fought hard to bring equality to all and we blinded by our egos, have undone all their good work.
  14. Guru nanak was stuanchly against pictures / idols but irony is today we have pictures of guru nanak created purely through imagination and people standing before them with folded hands - babaji solve my this problem or that , His core message was never ask for anything matereliastic and live through good and bad times with equanimity , if anything hard times are what get us closer to waheguru (dukh daroo sukh rog bhaya , ja sukh taam na hoye) Nanak bolan jhakna dukh chad m...angiye sukh || dukh sukh doye dar kapre pehre jaye manukh || Jithe bolan hariye tithe changi chup || Instead of focusing on guru ji's message we have reduced him to a mere Devta - devi deva poojiye kya mango kya dey . He did the very hard udasis risking his life, sacrificing time that he could have spent in comfort with his family to teach us how to live, but we are only interested in some miraculous favor out of his pictures - the message is too boring for us - we are too busy with facebook, tv, gossip, internet , movies etc - Mat vich ratan jawahar manik je ek gur ki sikh sunee
  15. There are two schools of spirituality - which one do you think sikhi belong to Gyaan marg vs bhakti marg (i) No Symbols of god - he is the universe vs God definitely needs a symbol For sikhs it has become Saroop of sggs and the confines of gurdwara (ii) No rituals are ever needed vs Rituals are a must In sikhi context we have started chavar, akahand paths, jot, sukhasan , prakash , expensive palkis , keep the saroop in AC / blankets (e.g I don't keep my phone in AC which also has the same SGGS in electronic format ) (iii) Meditation is the only way to find him - Pancha ka gur ek dhyan vs chanting or reciting (while mind is wandering in thorughts) or paying others to recite for you (as in outsourced akhand paths ) (iv) No miracles - only laws of nature which do not discriminate against materialistic person or favor spiritual one vs For your worldly needs beseech god - e.g cure diseases, pass exams , success in business etc. (v) No sectarianism - all humanity is absolutely one (Na ko hindu na musalmaan) vs A sect is almost always formed because our ego makes us gel with people who follow same symbolism as us , so now we have sikhi becoming a sect and not much of a way to live a full life and cut the cycle of rebirths.
  16. Finished 10 days Vipasna meditation - was the most profound spiritual experience of my life - almost reborn. Vipasna is a scientific way to live joyfully and happily regardless of your worldly circumstances and make others around you happy as well while helping you overcome the endless cycle of rebirths. Things I learnt 1. Nothing ever goes wrong - nothing has ever gone wrong and nothing ever will , therefore never regret your past or be in dilemma for the future - any choice you make will be the right choice . The forces of nature that run the planet are beyond human intelligence and nothing ever happens randomly. The fact that you are the doer/decision maker is an illusion which causes immense suffering to yourself and others around you. Hukmai andar sabko bahar hukam na koye || 2. Everything is impermanent - whatever good or bad times you are having will not last , so experience them as a witness rather than a consumer for example if you are feeling angry - say to yourself the reality of the moment is that my body is experiencing anger - watch your breath , heart rate etc .Or If you are having financial or health problems - say to yourself this will pass too , and same goes for good times , make the most of them while they are coz they would be gone too. Kis nal keejai dosti sab jag chalanhar || 3. Illusion of eternity - unfortunately we are conditioned to live our life as immortals - if I look back my 40 years of life seem like 40 seconds and I am not sure how many more 'seconds' are left , so why associate with this body and obsess with its future. Every new year take a moment to ponder about the last new year eve and it will seem like only yesterday. 4. Hate no one - Just as you are not the doer, so are not the other people which means if someone said or did something unfair to you , that action was caused by a force that is beyond this person's control so no point holding them responsible and causing yourself hatred and anger. Manda kis noo aakhiye je dooja hoye 5. Others before self - It brings way more joy to give something you cherish to someone who is in dire need than keeping it to yourself. I have decided to dedicate my life for the welfare of others. This automatically makes the 'I' in my very petty as its now just an end to a mean while before it meant the world to me. Mithya tan nahi parupkaari 6. Life obsessed with 'making it' is sure to bring misery - I am myself implicated in this as my attempts to becoming a software entrepreneur was causing me - lack of sleep , stress , excessive thinking - limit your material needs and you will find how little it takes to be happy. Kacha dhan sanchai murakh gavar Bikhyia ka dhan sada dukh hoye | Na saath jaaye na paraapat hoye. 7. Spend time in nature - watch the birds fly , feel the breeze on your body this is where you came from and what you will eventually merge into - feel the perfection in the apparent randomness . "Kudrat hai keemat nahi paaye " 8. Treat every day as your last - first thing when you get up in morning say to yourself with conviction this might very well be the last day of my life - I must make the most of it for myself and do something good for others . Ho▫e āmro garih mėh baiṯẖā karaṇ kāraṇ bisrohī. ||2|| He considers himself to be immortal; he sits in his home, and forgets the Lord, the Cause of causes. Anik bẖāṯ kar maṇī▫e sāje kācẖai ṯāg parohī In various ways, he fahions the beads, and strung them on a slender thread. Ŧūt jā▫igo sūṯ bāpure fir pācẖẖai pacẖẖuṯohī. ||3| The thread shall break, O wretched man, and then, you shall repent and regret. ||3|| 9. Do not argue - Almost all arguing/debating is ego fuelled wastage of your precious breaths. You can't explain quantum physics to a Donald Trump voter. Vaad vivaad kahu seo na keejai | Rasna ram rasayan peejai and Parh akhar eho buhjiye | Murakhe naal na lujhiye || 10. Cut all electronic noise out - facebook , tv , internet forums , movies , etc are all rasas that yield zero outcome at the end , so the sooner you get yourself out of the addiction the better
  17. Should sikhs celebrate divaali (rechirstened as bandi chor divas)when there is no historical proof of Guru Hargobind jee acutally coming home on a day that coincides with hindu Diwaali ? Share your views - in my view if we have a good naam simran practise then everyday is diwali
  18. Do not ever mind the mean words which others say to you , for it is Waheguru himself who is speaking through them . Āpe suṇ sabẖ vekẖ▫ḏā pi▫ārā mukẖ bole āp muhāhu. The Beloved Himself sees and hears everything; He Himself speaks through the mouths of all beings.
  19. ਨੀਲ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ नील वसत्र पहिरि होवहि परवाणु ॥ Nīl vasṯar pahir hovėh parvāṇ. The false come and sit within them. ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ਵੇ ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ॥ मतु भिटै वे मतु भिटै ॥ Maṯ bẖitai ve maṯ bẖitai. They cry out, "Do not touch our food, ਇਹੁ ਅੰਨੁ ਅਸਾਡਾ ਫਿਟੈ ॥ इहु अंनु असाडा फिटै ॥ Ih ann asādā fitai. this food of ours will be polluted! ਤਨਿ ਫਿਟੈ ਫੇੜ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥ तनि फिटै फेड़ करेनि ॥ Ŧan fitai feṛ karen. With filthy minds, they try to cleanse their mouths. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ कहु नानक सचु धिआईऐ ॥ Kaho Nānak sacẖ ḏẖi▫ā▫ī▫ai. Says Nanak, meditate on the True Lord. ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥ सुचि होवै ता सचु पाईऐ ॥२॥ Sucẖ hovai ṯā sacẖ pā▫ī▫ai. ||2|| People like Tohra , Longowal etc were amritdharis too , who threw their hands up in air when guru needed them and encouraged young sikhs to make shahadat while they sat on the sidelines, If you are pure, you will obtain the True Lord. ||2||
