  1. Hmm....I have also Heard lectures of Yogi Bhajan Singh and must say that he is quite charismatic as an orator ...and he really advocates on Sikhi pronciples like no other and his created adherents are more devout and self satisfied than any normal Indian Sikh I will find on the street. But this question has crept in my mind more often, are his preachngs in agreement with the teachings of the Guru . The concepts that he claims abt Yoga re very true at least with Yogic sciences as I have happened to verify them on various resources. those who have followed his Yoga teachings swear by him to the core......If u do a wikipedia....he has stated that more than a yogi he is Sikh and always remain one. So im unclear about his intentions...but from what I could understand he wanted to more Good than anything else. He freed so many hippies of the 70s era of Drug addiction and got them into path of God Beleivng I see so many Gora people in Gursikh form and that really makes my heart swell with Pride....so with a little bigger perspective I dont feel like accusing him of anything wrong.

  2. akitosforever im with you mate! I think we're flattering ourselves a tiny bit too much don't you think? Bollywood really don’t have the time to have an underlying anti-sikh agenda nor are they seriously pathetic enough dig their own graves! Just watch this space though because sikh representation can only improve for the future but don't be expecting something in which Indian songs are replaced for kirtan lol.... However I have a feeling people on this forum will never be completely satisfied regardless of anything and this begs the question why have we become so selfish? Stay positive guys…positive attitude makes all into kings ;)

    SSA

Thanks for being with me ...but I just feel that as Sikhs we are becoming more and more insecure and seeing the world with a very limited vision. We keep sikh principles on our sleeves yet apply them very conditionaly . I dont think any of Guru Ji's felt insecured at anytime and saw the world and society against them. .....I guess they always chose to fight the wrong virtues of every individual instead of targetting individuals. especially seeing everything as against you is crippled mentality and that is so distant from Sikhs way of life.

And yes abt the postive attitude thing.....I guess u ve been watching Akshay Kumar more often prmoting his film....lolz

  3. Positive representation!!??

In another singh king thread there is a constructive open letter to the producer of singh is king. It speaks honestly of the lack of research and the author is pro-active in getting in touch with the producer of battle of saragarhi in advance. That effort and an open mind is necessary. But is it acceptable to stop there?

Do not be hoodwinked by having a bone thrown your way by bollywood. “Research” has become the buzzword, the escape for what is wrong with singh is king

In America racial segregation based on “separate but equal” was accepted by even blacks! But they did not stop there. It was better than where they were before as slaves. However, in addition to the open mind they had an awake mind and challenged the whole framework in America. Likewise, we need to challenge the very framework of India’s disgusting racism.

Given the effort, resources and funding that go into such a movie, Bollywood is not merely careless in their research. Every subtlety in such a movie is written, reviewed and refined until it is just the way they want it. A make-up person will spend more time on a few strands eyebrow, then they did on the dastar! Outrageous! This is not a high school play. The coordination and effort is massive. Willful blindness is not the same as a mistake.

Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia (so called akshay) says

“I am playing Happy Singh in the film, which is very close to my heart. I’m a Punjabi and grew up in a Punjabi environment. I did not do much preparation for the role as I am familiar with their style. Playing the character was not at all difficult for me.”

To top that off, he’s from Amritsar!! So did he not once have a mirror in front of him during the months and months of shooting and think even once… “Some of these turbaned guys look like a bit of a mockery of a Sikh”…“my Sikh teacher, neighbor, childhood friend, professor, would find this or this or this…. particular part to be an insulting and hurtful stereotype.

Bollywood is a running ad campaign for the nation as to how people should think (or not think at all). The stereotypical bollywood hatred is India’s “war against phantom evil” and “war against anything that might result in actual free thought. Hatred in political speeches could be challenged, but incorporate that hatred into a bollywood flick and the country eats it up and becomes that hatred.

It simply does not ring true that there are mere “oversights” in this movie. The movie is the usual hate filled anti-sikh agenda (who needs malicious intent, once the machine is in motion, just a little grease will do). It ensures that any inspiring Sikhs around the world, those featured on various sikh websites who are excelling in the mainstream are neutralized.

India’s masses are being fed the usual bollywood diet of communal hatred to which their taste buds have become accustomed. Sikhs in India and abroad on the same diet learn to become what is acceptable to Bollywood, a caricature, void of dignity and self respect.

Bollywood does stay slightly ahead in response to the protest of the mockery and belittling of various groups. It has stayed a step ahead by modernizing the mockery. They have taken on a complimentary mocking bent. For example how wonderfully big-hearted, liberal, dancing, jokester this “Singh” is. How good that suave muslim is who defies the fanatic muslims holding the koran. How good a sikh or muslim is who puts the flag ahead of personal faith or ahead of their evil brethren.

Some of us, suggest we are Sikhs and then act like bollywood’s clown slaves, promoting that kes is not necessary (speaking of respect and understanding, not ones personal circumstance), social drinking is OK, casteism, sexism are OK, etc.

Some of us have become accustomed to being slapped in the face by bollywood. We’ve been taught to be proud of the special style of slap for Sikhs, which causes us to break out into banghra; thankful when they tell us that we can have good attributes as a silly hero while we get slapped.

Singh aka Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia is king… is largely a complete mockery of Sikhs. It is another attack at the Sikh psyche. It is incredible that some of us think we’re being celebrated. Yes, as fun loving unintelligent buffoons. They are laughing AT you!!...and you laugh too thinking “singh is king”. Big-hearted, fun-loving, brave…read between the lines …“thick-headed”.

Shame on bollywood for being a sophisticated high-tech version of the Ku Klux Klan operating manual. Shame on ourselves for being so gullible and lost.

I must say what brilliant thesis u have written......u have indeed succeeded in conveying thoughts to the sangat in the right language.

Unfortunately your thoughts happen to be filled with negativity, prejudice, and personal hatred towards anything which is not in accordance with ur limited vision.

I'm nt be anyone's advocate and say that Movie and Media are playing responsible enuf role , but I'm sensible enuf to understand that Bollywood is incapable or irresoponsible to that extent that it will portray stereotype image of anyone and it has not Shied from Displaying COPS and MINISTERS as the prime culprits in India Democracy. How do think that can be explained if all this is part of larger propaganda.

Listen and get this very clear.....Bollywood can and will make anything sellable if it wants to....in the process of making the content like able they will play around with reality more often than not. It has done that while portraying ministers , cops ,muslims, government and the list is endless. So please get rid of this vision which comes from one pair of spectacles and get your perspective right .

  4. Whao....there cud be so many justifications to this.....In either direction I mean...If u say listening to qwwali is right..u can have best of the defense argument to convince everyone sililarly otherwise.

However I really see this approach as Pigeon holed vision where we are too limited by our thoughts.....Im no master or scholar.....but I have studies Sufism to quite an extnt....they way the Sufis do Ibadat of Allah is so pure ,declining all the other materialism and wealth ...now this itself can open aother Pandora box for a heated discussion as Guru Sahebs told us not to fulfill our desire of GOd by giving up any household responsibilities ....or leading a yogi jeevan

    As described in a gurbani

    Anjan Mahe Niranja(n) Rahiya(e)

meaning simply that we have to maintain the purity staying in the filth (anjan) of this world.

However there is no harm in emmercing oneself in any form of elation as long as you have love for that supreme being and essense of God in your actions... qwwali is just one example....I have literally seen people getting liberated by Music listening , Dancing, Doing Puja( typical Hindu Style) , Reciting Mantras......who are we to decide anyone way or path to reach GOd.......God is a personal experience than based on opinions and thoughts.

  5. Wow !!!!!!! cool stuff.......buh we need to create Sikhs not Punjabis......it's a prime example how we've messed up sikhism big time. The guy does Japji Sahib and mentions turban and beard, even got a 'punjabi' name but hardly makes any reference to Sikhism, not his fault though...thats the way he's been brought up and taught and thats the way most of Sikh youth are being brought up, as punjabis first and as sikhs second.

On a positive note .......that was really cool, lol even his english accent was that of a punjabi and not of a chinese of malaysian.

    SSA.....

Why is it that we are used to looking at the world and its amazing happenings through some glasses of negativity and prejudism....

With commnts like above i feel that there is deep sense of insecurity within us...which is taking away the joy from everything we ought to see as normal occurances of the world.

Y do we need to rub of the topiv of Creating Sikh and not Punjabi....this was nt abt any religon or cast...i dont think this represnts messing up of Sikhi...Punjabi Pride is sumthing that unites punjabis from different religons or castes.....sumthing that u r seeing as a hindrance looks like a catalyst to me fo uniting us overlooking any differences. My family watched it with me we had good 5 mins of amusing time.!!!!!!

  6. SSA....

Oh that is so nice of you....just sat through the whole kirta nd loved every shabad of it.

    Thanks a lot.

    Fateh

I don't beleive that it is in a Raag. Shafqat Ali Khan has just composed the Shabad very beutifully .

    WJKK WJKF...

If it is Kirtan or even if not just by listening to it I can assure that it is based on some raagas .....

It will be great if some experienced listeners can recommend similar raag based kirtan.

Or even our Sangat's personal fav wil also be a great experience to go thru!

  7. this film is realistic this is the overwhelming majority of the "sikh" population, both of which I am not in support of, the film is about "singh" the origin of which goes beyond sikhs, if the film potrays anything wrong about our religion as a philosophy, i.e sikhs believe in polygamy or idol worship, than that is another thing.

This film has to be distinguished from the theatre play in birmingham a few years ago which was an insult to Sikhi, I can't believe ppl are comparing Guru Gobind Singh Ji's approach to the mughals to the opposition of this film.

If you don't like the film don't watch it, and educate anyone who is misleaded by it, I just hope this film is not used by people who just like to get into a mob and create havoc, which will potray the sikhs as extremists and fundamentalists, which is worse. As especially as this film may be targeted like the bombs that went off in india, which was wrongfully liked to sikhs, which again was worse for sikhs.

I would like to may it clear that I am not against those Tyaar par Tyaar Gursikhs who have protested peacefully in the past for valuable causes, in a manner consistent with sikhi, only resorting to armed or physical struggle when the situation has required such a response.

If the "real" gursikhs wish to peacefully demonstrate about any innaccuracies in the film I am supportive ( I don't include myself as a real sikh) as this would be fruitfull, but to just throw bricks at cinemas and other mindless violence is as foreign to Sikhi as this film.

Very well said my dear friend........why do we give his world a reason that you give Sikhs a reason and we will unleash the swords . Arent we strong enough to withstand some hick ups like a bollywood film which will be a passe in max a months time.

Someone in between also asked that who has polled not to ban the film. I m one of them who has voted not to ban the film.

    FYI

The fims has already got approval from all major sikh authorities . A coupla disrespectful hurtful scene in the film have already been blacklisted.

Im nt advocating nyone here....just seein things as they are ...nd Im nt very comfortable i Misinterpreting things.

  9. Sat Sri Akal Sangat;

I usually search youtube for any special Kirtan programmes.....but I simply was humbled when I Heard and watched sikhnet.net official annual video with Kirtan playing in raags which just had tears flowing out of me for no apparent reason.

I enjoy kirtan very much in general but this was so pure that it stirred very different emotions

    You enjoy it too:

now the most amazing part is that it is Sung by Shafqat Ali Khan and does not take more than one guess to know that he is a muslim .

If anyone is aware that in which Raag has the shabad been sung and if you could post the link for more such gurbani in the same raagas I would be grateful on behalf of everyone who listen's to the kirtan.

Also please post your fav kirtan gurbani video audio clips and share the holy treasure with Sangat.

  13. well lets just end this, in life you learn from your mistakes, without mistakes there wouldn't be anything to learn.

    fateh

First of all, you had said you respect the religion, if you respected Sikhi, then obviously you would have kept your hair, this isn't respect, its being arrogant towards your religion.

Secondly, why do the mistake in first place and that knowingly and with intentions, if I said to a little toddler DO NOT TOUCH THE IRON IT IS HOT and he does it, then he burns himself. Again, by you doing this mistake, you will loose your respect as a SIKH not human, but a SIKH and loose your identify, anyone can say you are a muslim or a hindu, which isnt a bad thing, and my attentions are not bad about other faiths, but I totally disagree with your mentality about respecting and being a sikh from heart, if it was, you would keep your hair, full stop!

Equally anyone who has the appearance and goes against other acts of Sikhi, is disrespecting the religion, i.e. the guy I found walking with a big beard and smoking, hes the guy who would say yeh but I respect the religion, yeh right pull the wool over my eyes.

I aint no better, I do trim my beard, I disrespect my religion on one point and many others, I need a slap, but I respect others.

    Hey Bruv....

Glad to hear ur realization and respect for sikhi.

Even I was in the same boat of trimmin the beard long time ago.......then i just stopped.

Man it is dat simple ....just dont do it for a week unconditionally, u wont feel like fudging it again.

Trust me whn u stop doin it u will so much confident in ur Walk wid family n frenz ...just carry urself wid confidence.

Once u have untrimmed beard and kes, it will inspire u more towards being more devout ...

Just try it for a week man....

Nywz sorry if u felt i was preachin or stuf....it is just that it will make U feel better.
